Using plastic speedfit pipes for plumbing

Using Speedfit plumbing is by far the quickest and easiest way to complete the job for a home improver or DIYer. The pipe and fittings are more expensive than their copper counterparts but the time it takes is reduced hugely because getting a watertight joint is so easy. Only a few basic plumbing tools are required, but we really do recommend getting a plastic pipe cutter to ensure the ends of your pipe are cut square. Excellent video, thank you. I'm building a system that harvests rainwater and directs it to the toilet cistern and this is just the kit I need.

Make sure you can get to them to fix any problems in the future. They are not as rely able as copper soldered joints due to the o rings. However I have used thousands of them without a lot of problems. If it leaks just change it.

Hi just moved house and installing new shower room got a few quotes form plumbers they wanted 750 pounds just to pipe a shower sink and toilet so a friend of mine said why not try plastic pipe work i did some reserch online and contacted john guests tech guru he told me to follow his instructions on joints and i would be fine .I fitted the new shower room myself for less than 100 pounds and tested pipework NO LEAKS so to all the greedy plumbers out their long live speedfit and what goes around comes around R.I.P. GREEDY PLUMBERS .

Eric Parton Hi Eric, well done on a leak free job. You dont mention how long it took you. Plumbers obviously have to charge for their labourtime as well as the fittings but it sounds like you have made a huge saving, great news.

Eric Parton Sounds about right Eric. Good plumbers will earn £50K per year (£200 per day) and would have to charge for the time they spend quoting (There is no such thing as a free quote!) and picking up materials, overheads like insurance, fuel etc.... So £750 sounds a bit top heavy but not a rip-offprice. Fair play to you for saving the dosh !!

How do you remove copper 20mm pipe from plastic joints, in my case it relates to changing a 3 bar water pump, but on examination after draining down could not remove the fittings possibly due to them being fitted nearly 10 years ago or have they furred up inside, the collars that you press in to remove seem solid or has the installer used glue?

The collars should push in toward the fitting Reg, this allows the pipe to be pulled out. If they will not move they may well be furred up and over-doing the pressure used may well damage them. You may well be better off cutting the pipe back a little, adding new lengths of pipe and new fittings to put the new pump into

Thank for that, it did occur to me but was hoping to avoid doing so. Now I have as what you thought has come true, the tube was damaged very slightly when getting them off so have to cut off and extend. Thanks again

Do you really need the inserts when making a push fit connection?

H Nur Yes you do need the inserts. While the pipe is very very strong, when it gets warm it will get a little softer. The ends of the pipe then become a bit more flexible and as they are clamped so tightly into the conectors they can squash in a little causing a leak if the inserts are not installed.

can you use this plastic pipe for radiators, ie- to connect to the main feeds of the radiator?👍😀

Are the inserts essential for all the plastic fittings? The guy seems to contradict himself - says the insert is to prevent the pipe being crushed by a compression fitting then later, 4:30, says "always with the insert in...there are stop ends..." Since the speedfit fittings don't crush an olive to the pipe, they surely don't need an insert?

Hi there, Just about to install some speedfit. I could lay the pipes, of course, based on right angles but it would be convenient to locations using gentle bends. Is this permissible with speedfit pipe?

+Kevla Head Sure is Kervia, thats the great thing about Speedfit, you can do pretty much anything with it !
