when the direct speech comes first in a sentence, and an exclamation/ question mark is used, do you capitalise the dialogue tags that come after? It's just that (at roughly 3:09 ), I saw that they didn't have capital letters, but in other cases I've seen, in my own experience, they do.

I'm a little confused by what you mean. At 3:09 the sentence is: "Are the shops closed?" asked Mr Willis. The only capitals needed here are at the beginning of the sentence (Are) and the proper noun (Mr Willis).

Dialogue tags in those cases are not in capital letters even though they come after a question mark or an exclamation mark. It's like one sentence. The same happens following a comma inside the quotation marks. She said, "We need more bread." But if you start with a direct speech: "We need more bread," she said. Or another variant: "We need more bread!" she said. But: "We need more bread!" Anna said. Or: "Do we need more bread?" she asked. But: "Do we need more bread?" Anna asked. Or: She said, "Do we need more bread?" Or: She said, "We need more bread!" It's confusing, I know! And some people have different opinions about when to use "said" and when to use "asked".

So why are there no end of speech marks only beginning of speech marks on my phone keyboard? I know how to use them. I just don't have both of them to use. Has anyone else noticed this? And no I can't select it as an option by holding down the key.

What about if you want to end a sentence inside speech marks, because the speech is very long? Then start another sentence said by the same person, or character? I've been out of school a very long time, skill fade is real even for basics lol

Yes you can. That is indirect (or reported) speech rather than direct speech.

Outside of Britain, they're commonly used for a quote within a quote. Eg. Mark recalled, "All of a sudden the police yelled, 'Everybody get back!' "

At 3:08 in the video: why is ‘asked’ and ‘the’ not capitalised after the ? and ! I am really confused about punctuation within speech. Thank you Any reference books recommendations that give a definitive answer to this would be greatly appreciated. This is a wonderful video by the way. Very easy to understand. It just didn’t answer my specific question.

Notice that the question mark (or exclamation mark) is inside the speech marks? This shows that is is only the direct speech within the sentence that has come to an end- not the actual sentence. The whole sentence includes what was said and who said it. Hope this helps 🙂

This is fantastic! I already know all this, but you explain so well that I had to subscribe. I wanted to double-check that I don't need quotation marks inside speech bubbles and the previous video from an elementary school teacher I watched was incorrect. The teacher was not adding commas and the comments section is disabled so the poor learners learn bad grammar.
