Using the AeroGarden Seed Starting System to Start Onion Seedlings

In this video I will be setting up the AeroGarden Harvest 360 Elite with the Seed Starter Tray to start bunching onion seedlings for transplanting into the raised garden bed in March. Seeds germinate rapidly using the hydroponic system, and can easily be transplanted using the seed pods that the seedlings are started in. This video covers the first two weeks of February, which ensures the seedlings are ready to transplant the first week of March. As soon as the onion seedlings are taken out of the AeroGarden Harvest it will be cleaned and set up to start the warm weather plants such as tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, basil, etc.
I use the FoxFarm Grow Big Hydroponic Liquid Plant Food with the AeroGarden system. When growing plants in the Harvest it requires 8 mL of plant food every fourteen days, but when using it for seed starting it only needs 4 mL of liquid plant food. It is best to use liquid plant food rather than a solid type in order to not plug the pump.

I enjoy your videos and common sense approach. Using this method for seed starts for the first time and amazed how quickly they pop up. Thank you for your extra tips and link to planting chart because I drew my own. Chart is much better.

The Aerogarden has been a tremendous help in getting the spring seed starting going. The only side effect I found with onion is that after transplanting into the garden, the onions tended to grow through the pod and it remained there until harvest.

Yes, any onions or leeks can be started this way. They can be transplanted into the garden as soon as the soil is workable. Onions are frost tolerant.

@@setthebarhigh6872 Be sure to harden off the onion seedlings before transplanting them into the garden. Once they are hardened off, they will do very well in the garden even in cold weather.

I find that when I'm trying to start onion seedlings in those pods, they seem to be climbing out of them (as I see you experienced). I started a bunch of them and they all grew to the stage yours at except maybe a little earlier. I'm concerned they cannot pierce the pod sponge that aerogarden makes. Have you attempted this with those sponges?

I used pods made out of Coir that I bought on-line, and the roots didn't have any problem getting through the pods. We are now enjoying the spring onions we are pulling out of the garden, and they sill have parts of the Coir pod on them.
