Using the IAC Driver with Ableton Live

The IAC Driver is a free utility available on every Mac, that allows you to unlock endless possibilities in any edition, or version of Ableton Live. Create MIDI clips to control features in Ableton Live. In this tutorial, Ableton Live Certified Trainer Will Doggett shows you how to set up the IAC Driver on your Mac.

Really helpful, thank you. I used this a couple of years ago to set up my macbook when I started using Ableton Live. Then forgot about it. I just needed it again setting up a new laptop. Ableton and Blackstar are lucky you are explaining how to set up their products. It would be a useless pile of expensive hardware without these videos. Thanks!

Man, it was really helpful! I‘m doing on Ableton Live 11 on PC and still works very well. The step of hit the button exactly while midi was been executed was crucial. Thank you so much for this!

thanks for this! i knew there was a way to have dummy midi clips trigger midi mapping, but i just couldnt work it out. the iac driver is the key! thanks again

will man im so confused.. im using windows i have everything routed and set up exactly correct.. still nothing happens when the midi note hits.. i even tried the manual write and wrote in specific note to trigger clip, then added that note in the midi.. and nothing happens.. any suggestions..? many thanks..!

@@fromstudiotostage quick question, say I use this to make a loop. When it gets to the midi note, it goes to the last marker and creates a loop until I use my midi controller to turn off the “loop” midi track which ends the loop and goes into the song. Is there any way to then automatically turn the “loop” midi track back on to be ready for the next loop? Thanks so much I hope this makes sense

Hey thanks for your video! This use to work for me but now when using the IAC driver the midi dots are garyed out.... (yellow in device veiw but grayed out in the mixer section) My midi set up is the exact same shown here. Output IAC bus 1 - and the correct midi channel (CH 1) It's fine when I put in an External Instrument device on it - IAC bus 1 - CH 1 Do you know why this is? Would be ace to see midi information again in the mixer rather then the device secion for work flow. :) Cheers again

Hi, great video! I've been using this technique for shows for a few months now. My issue is that I'm playing a midi keyboard in the show as well. The IAC driver seems to only receive midi signals from Midi channel 1. I can't seem to get it to receive signal from other midi channels. This is annoying as my midi keyboard is also default using Channel 1. Do you know if there's a way to get the IAC driver to recognize signal from a different midi channel?

The best way for me to think about the IAC driver is a “virtual MIDI cable”. It can pass and receive any MIDI signal on any MIDI channel. If you change the track your sending commands to the IAC Driver to a different MIDI channel you’ll be set!

This video has helpful to understand IAC. I am trying to work MainStage and Live together. I would like to send sound from MainStage into customer filters I have used in Ableton Live. I used to do this with reason but now want to do it with MainStage. Is this possible? Someone pls help!

Hey, have followed your previous vid too, but unfortunately this doesn't work because for some reason instead of having "midi to" I see "audio to". how can change it? yes, it is a midi track=

Figured it out. Though track did not have an instrument attached to, it did have a default eq plugin attached. Once removed, 'audio to' changed to - 'midi to' and problem is solved. Thank you so much for this awesome tutorial playlist.

Please help someone. I try to send midi from Ableton Live 9 to Logic, via my iac driver. I want to use separate midi channels. But it seems whatever I do I cannot send midi from the different channels in Ableton and get Logic to receive on these same channels.. (sorry - difficult to explain).. Seems like ableton is just throwing midi on all midi channels not the individual channels that I set it to. Or Logic is receiving on all channels (not the individual channels I set it to..). Help is appreciated. Thanks !

There’s probably a setting in Logic to choose what channels to receive MIDI on. And make sure you’re sending on separate channels from Ableton tracks.

My friend this is great! Thank you, I have it working but it didn't actually solve my problem like i thought it would. Is there a way to midi map 2 separate notes to the same function in Ableton? For Ex. I trigger my looper "clear" button with the IAC midi note sometimes, and other times from my actual midi controller? This is where I'm getting stuck. In session view I want loopers to be able to clear hands free, but then in other parts of my live show, clear them using the buttons I have mapped on my drum pad at random times, or if i make a mistake can quickly clear etc. Can I have IAC midi notes automating things and also have the ability to automate those same things with my outboard midi gear is basically the question. Hope to hear back from you and either way this is already amazing as it is! Thanks in advance :))))

Not 100% sure how it works with the IAC Driver, but with to midi notes from a controller you just hit both at the same time. Can try it now but I thought that's how I did it when I needed it once 😊

@@Minebender9 kind of! I set up the IAC to make session clips close on their own handsfree, then If I want to do use the looper for the rest of it I do that separately now. This way if I want to have something i need to clear quickly I use the looper, but if I want to make a loop in a session clip the IAC opens and closes it for me on the set times, 4 bars etc. If I do that in a session clip and screw it up i just control Z it on my keyboard to delete it, then run the IAC loop again and get it! Hope that makes sense!

Guys, can you help me?! I do not see the "MIDI TO" tab that he shows on the video. Everytime I add a Midi Channel, it only shows "MIDI FROM" and "AUDIO TO"...not, "MIDI TO". I am running Ableton 10 Suite. Thx!!

Hi. Great video but having trouble. I do everything as suggested and get the midi to select the previous locator. However, when the midi clip ends the track continues to play on and not repeat. The locator is flashing green but does not activate. any ideas?

@@fromstudiotostage I figured it out. I had 16 bars selected on the loop number in the top left corner next to the metronome. It was looping but after 16bars instead of when I wanted it to. I’ve set it to 1 bar now. Worth mentioning that as when watching your video, I couldn’t tell what was actually dictating the moment the looped section resets and because the midi was dragged out across the entire loop section, I wrongly assumed it was controlled by the midi loop length. You probably deal with that in a previous video but in isolation, this was the only part that wasn’t clearly explained to me. Really great vids though. They’ve been a great help.

My IAC clips are only playing for one bar - then it loops back to the beginning of that bar. The clip is 4 bars long (so that I can have a series of controls in one clip), and isn't looped. Help! (please)

Just change the time signature for the section to be 16/4 (if you are in 4/4) or 24/8 (if you are in 6/8)

For some reason it's not working for me. I have a pc and am using LoopMidi. When in Midi mode I can't select anything that's purple. I can try and click the locator or previous locator and you can tell it doesn't recognize the click. Once out of midi mode I can select things again. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

@@obengsnr9082 I was having the same problem and i'm on PC as well. I used LoopBe1 which has literally no configuration as far as i can tell so initially i thought that might be it. However, i saw another KZfaq video where the user looped the MIDI clip while doing the MIDI mapping step and viola that got it to work for me. Hope that helps.
