Using the Zoom H6 as an audio interface on a Macbook

Tutorial for using the Zoom H6 Handy Recorder as an audio interface on a Macbook Pro.
I forgot to add a few things into this tutorial, but I'll address the first concern that sprang to mind. In all instances when using the Zoom H6 on my MBP, it was automatically added as the default audio input device in GarageBand when nothing else is plugged in. If it isn't, the default audio input device can be changed by going to the 'GarageBand' menu, selecting 'Preferences', clicking the 'Audio/MIDI' tab, and selecting 'H6' from the 'Input Device' drop down menu.

I was today years old when I learned the H6 doubles as an audio interface and I am so glad I landed on YOUR video for the explanation. I wanted to know about Garage Band and Audition so this was perfect! Thank you!

yo bro!!! this video is the one that cracked the code for me. i was getting [stereo mix] right but [multitrack] waa giving me fits. i didn’t know the XLR/TRS started at Input 3. also the tip for the live record was clutch as well. THANKS ALOT MY DUDE!!!!

I have a problem, that I dont see channel 3, 4, 5 or 6 of the zoom for input settings. So i cant record anything other that with the mic of the recorder itself. Anyone has any clue how to solve this problem? Thanks a lot.

Didnt you install any drivers? or just plug and play? Using it as Stereo Mix I can't control the volume from the system, do you have any idea why?

I've done all the steps with the zoom and selecting the right input on Garageband but nothing is being put into my source in Garageband, any ideas??

Is it possible to record more than two channels into a DAW at the same time? I have four mono synths I'd like to record simultaneously into separate tracks. Thanks.

Yeah. You can use all four channels without issue

Thanks. I have used my H4N as audio interface for numerous recordings in Logic/Garageband (eg DI for guitar and/or bass or using its phantom power ability to connect a condenser mic, or to record acoustic guitar using the Zoom mics), see for instance kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rLJ1ec56sOCZeH0.html as an example. Unfortunately, I accidentally broke one of the mics on the Zoom so am thinking of replacing it eg with a Zoom H6 that apparently has a better pre-amp than the H4, or getting a dedicated audio interface (or do both...) .

I'm trying this with GarageBand but no luck. I'm on a Mac Pro. Garageband sees it and I'm able to set my H6 as my in and out but no dice. I can here my bass playing when I plug my head phone into the zoom but no signal in GarageBand and nothing gets recorded. Any idea?

Denzel I am trying to set up my zoom H6 with a MacBook Pro and im using an adapter to plug the usb into my laptop which is usbc however the zoom h6 does not come up in my select input or output and it will only let me select 1 audio channel when using garage band, please could you help

I'm not sure what the solution for that would be. You'll want to see if connecting the device to another computer will work.

Hey Denzel, could I book a consult with you? My ZOOM H6 stopped working as an interface... I was able to use it as an audio interface before, and now no matter what I do, it won't pick up audio when it's plugged into my mac + SHURE SM7b.

get a USB C to USB dongle and you'll be fine

what if i have a mixer i want to connect the zoom h6 too and then connect it to garage band?

You'd need to run a cable from the output of the mixer to the input of the Zoom device.

Denzel, I've just bought Zoom H6 and using GarageBand. However, when I recorded using H6 that's connected to GarageBand, the sound wave on the GarageBand was flat even after I got closer to the microphone. When I replayed the recording, the volume of my voice was so low. I'd appreciate any guidance or advice. Thank you!

Hi Niken, there are a couple settings to check out. Is the channel armed record or Garage band, and is the phantom power turned on on the H6?

@@thatdenzel Thank you for your reply. Yes, it was armed to record. I am using Audio Technica ATR 2100x that doesn't need a phantom power, so I didn't turn the phantom power on.

USB 2.0 Cable - A-Male to Mini-B Cord. Depending on the version of MacBook, you'll need a USB A-Female to USB C-Male converter
