This video will show you the basics of using your ZOOM H6 as a 6in/2out audio interface on Windows. We will use Pro Tools as our DAW, but the process is the same for other DAWs (Cubase, Studio One, Reaper, ect...)
Depending on the DAW, the process of choosing the interface will be a bit different, but the other processes are the same.
You can use the ZOOM H6 as a 2in/2out audio interface, or as a Multi-Track 6in/2out audio interface. We will be using it as a Multi-Track audio interface. By using it as a 6in/2out audio interface, you can record up-to 6 tracks through the ZOOM H6 at the same time and into your DAW to separate tracks. If you use the 2in/2out method, it will act more like a mixer and you won't have control over each input individually in your DAW.
We will go through how to download the driver, choose the ZOOM H6 as our interface, record a microphone with phantom power, record through the attached capsule, and record a guitar.
There are more options that are not covered here, like Direct Monitor, Mixer adjustments, and effects, so try those out for yourself.
The ZOOM H6 is an extremely useful device that can go from being a standalone field recorder, to a full-blown audio interface. It is one of the most useful devices I have ever used.

Thanks a lot for this information! I've been trying to use my zoom h6 as an audio interface in pro tools using a pc for 2.5 years, but it never worked. After using a mac for 14 years and it running seamlessly I've gotten so many gray hairs trying to get it working on pc, but ended up frustrated after the DAW kept crashing and crashing. I had nearly given up and was about to sell my pc to purchase another mac, when I tried switching to only using the stereo input and only using battery mode on the zoom to power it today. And VOILA it works! Thanks for a great video , it made me rethink the entire thing :)

I don't use a rack so I can't say. I'll use a U shaped stabilizing handle sometimes like this one kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f5yohJODrr6zoo0.html you can put a triple hotshoe adapter on the top mount and be pretty portable.

@BenoniStudio
@BenoniStudio 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah it should be the same. But you don't need to use it as an audio interface unless you want to record to a DAW instead of the SD card. If you are not livestreaming it and need computer sound, the best way is to use it standalone IMO. Transfer the files to a DAW for comp, eq, limiting, etc... and upload and/or sync to video.

Thank you for the information, I only have a question. When you explain about recording what is happening inside the zoomH6 is more like in an external device. How can I do if I can monitor my microphones but I can´t record it in ProTools 10, the waveform is flat and it doesn´t reflect what I´m Listening, is mandatory to have a second interface? I think is not normal. Again thank you for the help.

Random question. I just want to use this with Audacity to record acoutstic guitar using its x/y capsule as its mic. I do have it working and only using Stero Mix since I wont be using any of the other 4 inputs. I got it working by plugging it into my Window Laptop and then just using the menu and selecting Stereo Mix. But i got a question since I am a bit of a novice about this stuff, I did not download the ASIO drivers, and was just wondering if I need to download it to record stuff on Audacity (using just the mic channel). (edit) - So based one what I read online, ASIO makes recording sound better (i think). However, It looks like audacity does not support ASIO.

So you can get a feed from the top mic and the xlr inputs simultaneously as a USB interface? I.E. using it as a mic and feed for my dj set up at the same time in obs for streaming? Seems like none of the predecessors can do that, including the h5. Is that correct?

Thank you! A question, if you record, using a few mikes, to the SD card, in the SD card you get just a stereo mix, or you get all the tracks separated to use in a DAW?
@BenoniStudio
@BenoniStudio 7 жыл бұрын
You can use the Zoom H6 as a standalone recorder. If you were to use 4 microphones recorded to the SD card you would get 4 discreet channels. Meaning, the tracks are separate. An example would be you are using the Zoom H6 to record a podcast with 3 people total. You are using the XY mic and 3 mic's. The XY mic would capture the whole "scene", and would be a stereo track. Then, EACH microphone would capture the voice of the 3 podcasters INDIVIDUALLY, so you would have total control in POST of each persons microphone. This is a multi-track recorder. Does that answer your question?

Thanks for the video. I use an USB power adapter to supply the power on this H6 for phantom powered multiple mics, since the mics would exhaust very quickly on the four batteries. In this case I lost the opportunity to use the device as an audio interface since they're all coming from one USB port on H6. Any solution for that? Are they exclusive to each other by this design or there may be a way to do this that I don't know? Thank you!

Thanks for the Video! I ask myself how it´s working with Ableton and if there is a lot of latency from the device? I´m currently using and small Apogee Duet and the two channels are not enough for me. Not sure about if I should sell the Duet and buy the H6? Sometimes it´s good for recording a rehearsal but also I´m geting more interested in sound design and sampling nature sounds for a library and my music. What do you think?

I don't usually use the Zoom H6 as an audio interface. I will sometimes, but usually I'll use a more traditional interface like the Komplete Audio 6 or PreSonus 1824c or Focusrite 6i6, etc... It's great that it can be used as an interface, and it's also good for podcasting. What I really like about it is how mobile it is. There are no instrument pre-amps in the Zoom, so you'll need a DI box if you are using guitars or a bass with passive pickups.

I connected my iPad to H6 and using a 1/8" male to dual XLR male cable and recorded a song from a DAW app on iPad into H6 but the sound came out mono. The sound on my iPad from the DAW app when listened through headphones plugged into iPad is clearly a stereo as I have an stereo audio song track in it but when recorded to H6, it records mono. I tried both 320 KBPS in MP3 format, 24 bit/48 kHz WAV format and also 24 bit/96 kHz WAV formats with no luck. Also, listened to the recorded audio on the card on my Mac but it still sounds crappy and mono. Can you please help me how to record the sound in stereo exactly as how it sounds on the iPad?

But regarding latency,,, if you lower the buffer and play the guitar, is the delay noticable? The scarlett and Steinberg's have asio drivers that get delay down to 10ms which is not noticable. Can the h5 get to a non noticable level. At a 40ms latency for example I can play 2 notes on guitar before I hear the first. I see you talked about noticable delay, but can you eliminate that in the h5 playing with the buffer.

@CaidicusProductions
@CaidicusProductions 6 жыл бұрын
Perhaps he doesn’t really understand what you’re asking. If you’re wondering about using this device with a sound card, you don’t really need to, as it is its own sound card, when plugged in through usb. Your motherboard’s soundcard should be good enough to process the internal audio (the stuff your daw or computer are generating), though a higher end sound card will obviously sound better. Still, plugging this into a PC, you’re plugging it into the usb, so you don’t have to worry about whether or not your computer sound card is going to add noise to your recordings.

I used the H6 as an interface for several years with headphones. But note that the only way to hook up studio monitors to the H6 is using a 1/8” to dual 1/4” TRS breakout cable from the line out of the H6. Which is not balanced. And picks up terrible noise and hum and is unuseable if using it as studio monitor out.

Yes it can do that, but keep in mind the 1/4 inputs on the Zoom are not instrument level, so if your guitar has passive pickups, you might need to use a DI box. Active pickups will work fine though.

Hey. Great video. I have some question. When you try your Audio Technica microphone in ZOOM H6, we can hear a background noise. This is some ambience noise, or some noise from the zoom h6? I'm asking this because i want to buy exactly this combo (AT2020 + ZOOM H6) to record a podcast, so, can you explain me what is that noise, and what microphone are you using in all video? @BenoniStudio
@BenoniStudio 5 жыл бұрын
it's mostly room tone. but there is pre-amp noise when you go above 7 with the Zoom H6. You may think your room is quiet, but when you turn up the gain the mic becomes very sensitive and you will pickup sounds that you didn't know were there. You can quickly clean your audio with RX7 Voice De-Noise or NS1 from Waves or something similar.

In most reviews people comment that there is poor noise floor, a buzzing sound. Is this your experience when using the USB interface, recording?

I've got an H5 and I'm facing degraded quality issue when use it as audio interface. I wonder if the quality of H6 in both standalone and interface mode are the same.

Hello, really curious about the delay issues you have experienced when using the H6 as an audio interface. Is the buffer size setting sufficient for reasonably considering using the H6 as a standard audio interface (thinking of scarlett 2i2 or tascam 208i)? What features/capabilities would it be lacking compared to a dedicated audio interface? Thanks a lot for this great video

Well I finally got it anyway 3 weeks ago. Been using it since with no special latency issues. The thing I have to figure out now is how to properly manage the outputs (I might want to figure this out in the settings of my daw though)

@@pleiades250 Hello, honestly works great for me, used it as an audio interface with 2 channels (XY + guitar through a direct in) or as a portable recorder on batteries. Love the versatility !
