Using your blending board to make mini batts & Rolags

So today upon request in comments I have put together a few ways to use your blending board to make mini batts and puni/rolags.

Thank you for the lovely feedback. Yes as a self taught crafter I have never had access to formal tutoring from guilds. But also feel that when your first learning or been doing it for a long time you don’t want stalwarts drumming technique need to info or comments that it has be done this way and now other way and if you blend fibres into wool your ruining it or you’ll limit your use yes these facts can be true but fun first explore and learn is more important. 🧚‍♀️

Great demonstration I always end up with thick and thin yarn and fighting with rolag now I know to turn it in a clockwise direction. Thank you

I used to work in a stroke rehab ward. Very hard work but the rehab was very rewarding. I imagine the acute ward must be very hard to cope with. It is lovely to have this wonderful hobby to rush home to!

That’s great Deborah I am chuffed i could help. I often feel like I am teaching my granny to duck eggs when I do my videos but I just want to help folk to have the best start in crafting with fibre. There is so much content on here doing the same but i think sometimes It just takes that one person to say it differently that the penny drops xx

Hi again. I have a whole lot of your videos to catch up on. I have watched a lot of videos on how to use my blending board. None of them have shared as many good tips as I found on your video today. I've been using bamboo skewer sticks to clean mine. You can just imagine how much time that takes! Have to say, yours is the best video on blending boards that I have seen so far.

Thank you kindly I don’t often use my blending board often, mainly As I don’t spin rolags that much anymore but it’s where I started when I first started to sell my stash before I took my business to the next level. Go to that bad online shop named after the jungle lol 😂 and look for hair brush cleaners they look like miniature leaf rakes with wood handle cost a few quid for a pair. I use it to clean my blending board and drum carder.

Just use thicker needles I usually use 12mm needles or a pair of straight drumsticks. But when I filmed this video I was in the process of moving from the small room down To this unused front bedroom

Thank you kindly for saying so I really appreciate your feedback. My videos have come along way since that blending board one but it is the ethos I stand by. I have been working professionally as a dyer and fibre artist for 7/8 years and it’s an ever evolving process even I learn new ways to do thing and explain differently as my videos go on. Yes Iona is my older dog a very stubborn 6 year old Springer/patterdale terrier cross my hubby called he name because he thought it sounded like I OWNNA DOG lol🙈 we have another now since that episode Skhadi a rescue collie who thinks she is the star of the show lol and a totally menace xxx welcome and enjoy if there are any topics you want tips for them just leave a comment 🧚‍♂️

Thank you so much! I have a blending board I bought for myself as a birthday present some time ago but, when I tried to use it, I got into such a muddle as there were no instructions. So, the poor blending board has stayed in it's box!! Now I know what I was doind wrong! Who knew about turning the rolag? When I have some fibre to blend (I hate neps!) I will feel much more confident to try again now I have watched your video!

I do blend your yourself sets with my handdyed fibres and blends wools and fibres. I make them up when I blend my art batts so put a smaller selection from the same blend and sell the mask it’s.perfect if you can’t buy lots of stuff at once for a selection ihave it all sorted you can use on your blending board to for mini batts and rolags. Thank you so much for your lovely feedback. Wingham wool works you can find online to order carding cloth and I think the threshing barn you can find online but you may need to phone them to order. 🧚‍♀️

@@chattyjo1 I was lucky enough to buy a piece of carding cloth along with an Ashford flick brush and a small classic carder brush in a Facebook group. It arrived in today's post! All for £24 including delivery! Just need a chopping board or similar now. Thanks for the heads up about supplies though 👍

No I don’t but the base chopping board it was from IKEA £10 and the cloth was from Wingham Wool it was £48 then I used a adhesive spray to stabilise the carding cloth and staples

Lovely rolags. If I may share some advice, try rubbing waxed paper along your dowels to make the fibers easier to remove. I keep mine just lightly waxed for whatever I'm doing with fibers on them. I am also not shy about using 220 grit sandpaper to make them smooth before waxing. Love your demonstration.

Great tip to be honest I only used them as I couldn’t fined my jumbo needles just so happened to have to dowel as they were to go on my peg board 🙈 but a great tip

Honestly, it looks like you’re turning it in an anti-clockwise direction when you’re getting that thin draft on my screen! Is it filmed backwards or mirrored? I will definitely try that next time I spend from rolag. The last time I was spinning some Shetland blended with Falklands, it was giving me a bit of a hard time compared to the first time I had done some. Thank you so much for your mini batt technique. I wanna try that too!!

It is being rolled in a anti clockwise then when you spin it later you slowly turn clockwise to get a smoother consistency when spinning it.

I do live chats once a fortnight on this channel and they coincide with my current topic back to basics I have been doing blending demos on them and will do another this Wednesday lunchtime using texture and best ways to blend without gunks of fibres trapping in your blending board. What are those little bits you call niips? Where do you buy / get them?

Nepps can be bought from myself as a mixed dye sets or you can buy from large whole sale that sell wool roving/fibre and add ins such as these if you are in the uk there are World of wool, wingham wool work, Adelaide walker as well as smaller business like myself

How do you know when you've built it thick enough?

It’s just really about gudging get yourself about 50g of roving and fill the board you will still see the tines above the fibre but you will start to feel a resistance to packing the fibre when the board has taken enough. Then with the bit of roving you have left weigh it and you can then guesstimate that you blending board can take that about of fibre. But it’s not a exact science as every wool fibre is different then adding textures will effect the blending.
