Warship Guide - USS Indiana BB-58
USS Indiana was not as famous as her sisters but was still a gallant fighting ship in her own right. Often the forgotten SoDak, she saw extensive action in the Pacific theater during World War 2 and earned 9 battle stars for her efforts. Nicknamed “Indy” and also "The Hoosier Houseboat", she was the second battleship of the South Dakota class to be built. Her guns shelled numerous enemy installations throughout the Pacific and provided vital protection to the US fleet's valuable aircraft carriers.

Sad to see such a fine ship scrapped. She did her duty and brought her crew home safe.

Thanks! I didn't know anything about this ship until now. Stupid move on the Captains part to move and collide with Washington.

Thank you for this great video! Indiana was a great ship and had an active career during the war. It is great to remember her and her service to the war effort.

The state of Indiana wanted the old battleship. They annoyed the Navy with their many requests. Indiana did receive the silver set that they bought for USS Indiana BB-1, which is considered the first battleship, in the 1800s. It served on multiple battleships named USS Indiana and was serving on a battleship of another name when Indiana requested to have it back. It currently resides in Indianapolis in the Sailors And Soldiers Monument Museum. Indiana also received the bow which is currently at Indiana University in Bloomington. I BELIEVE that The university has a piece of a mast as well. P.S. "An anchor from Indiana is on display outside the Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne" per @thedispenzas7957

Thoroughly modern and potent battleship all her life and her sisters as well. For my tastes the best looking of the US battleships.

I have a weak spot for the SoDaks...they look they mean business and they look as their business is mean: they look powerful and intimidating! Beautiful ships!

They also use them for man made reefs and sometimes for target practice. That’s sad too. I watched 2 of the 3 Destroyers I served on being sunk after they no longer had use for the Navy…

It depends on the State. New York was supposed to buy _Enterprise_ but they didn't come up with the money and she was scrapped. Washington State could have bought the _Washington_ but they didn't and she was scrapped. I dropped coins in a can when I was in 4th Grade to help buy the _North Carolina_ and got to visit her once. _Indiana_ and _South Dakota_ could theoretically have had their ships there - using the Great Lakes and/or Rivers but they would have had to really work at it including dredging. The _North Carolina_ is at Wilmington and got there on a river. So - it's not like it _couldn't_ be done. It just would have been a lot more work for _Indiana_ and _South Dakota_ . You generally find the Southern States to be more Patriotic. Alabama and Texas have their Battleships but Mississippi doesn't. .

Interesting comments. As you said, to preserve the Indiana & South Dakota battleships as museum ships in their own states would have required significant effort (including working with other states to allow construction efforts) and high-cost funding to enlarge the passage through the Great Lakes as well as set up their final locations. I don't think you can generalize that the southern states are more patriotic than other parts of the country. I'd say they are just geographically luckier with most of the ones that saved their ships having ports directly on (or extremely near) to the Atlantic or Gulf of Mexico. If you go to Indianapolis and cities/towns like Evansville, Vincennes, Fort Wayne, Terre Haute, etc. you will many war museums & memorials to veterans that range from the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Civil War, WWI & WW II, Korea, Viet Nam and modern engagements in the Middle East. The biggest inland ship museum I'm aware of is the LST Ship Museum (LST -325) in Evansville on the Ohio River. The Evansville Shipyard produced over 200 naval vessels for WW II, including 167 LSTs making the city the largest inland producer of war ships during that time.
