Being a Ex TM2 I was on edge watching that back hall operation even as I noticed the inaccuracies. Crews can be very hard on this kind of screw up but the Capt pushing the TM to redeem himself was the right thing to do.

thats a pretty big error, the mk 14 torp needs to travel 500 yds in open water to arm, it has a paddle wheel inside that the water rotates as it moves forward to arm itself, also it can't be disarmed with a tongue depressor, the detonator mechanism doesn't work that way. i was in the navy in the early 70's and we had mk 14 fish on our ship, many of them had been on war patrols and not used. i was formally trained on the mk 14 at torpedo man school in orlando fl.
@txnetcop
@txnetcop 7 жыл бұрын
Actually you are only half right. In 1951 my father had to disarm mk14 torpedo that was beached with a tongue depressor. In 1955 all remaining MK 14s had a different detonator. My dad was a UDT man and said that tongue depressor was better than a hammer...jokingly.

We used to boresight our tank's main gun pretty much the same way the Thresher boresighted theirs. There's a more expedient way to do it, but maybe they didn't want to show that to the general public. I also wonder how the binoculars held on tightly enough to stay in position after each firing. Whatever they did, it worked.

I've recently read that the US Navy didn't want big deck guns after the first few subs had been given 6" and 5" guns for feat that a sub would be tempted to stay on the surface and engage in a shoot-out that they couldn't win... Sounds like they didn't trust their own Skippers!!!

Just think if the war might of been shorter if the torpedoes worked in 1942 and the first half of 1943 properly. The Japanese would of lost a lot of ships during that period. By the end of 1944 the Japanese were having trouble with lack of fuel for the ships. How much worse would it of been if the torpedoes worked.

Doesn't the crew understand what "aground" means? Grounded ships won't sink no matter how many gun rounds or torpedoes you put into them.
@donaldhill3823
@donaldhill3823 5 жыл бұрын
I think the script was miss-leading. I am sure the actual crew knew why it was not sinking. The gun probably was not doing the damage needed to disable the ship beyond recovery. This could have been contributed to the guns accuracy as well as penetrating/explosive power of the rounds.

surprised they hadn't stopped at Harbor Freight to get a 'come-along'... would have been much simpler then all those men on the line. In all seriousness though, the guy who screwed up and put the ship and crew in danger, would in the future, be the least likely to screw up again.

Opening scene of that sub coming out of the water - Surely that's far from normal. I mean it must be hell inside. Is there a purpose to it? I'm guessing some emergency drill of some kind.

Aground means more than just resting on the bottom of the sea. In this case, it was hung up (aground) on a reef. Flooding it with holes at the waterline caused it to slip off into the depths.

The narrator says the gun is a 3", but the video shows a 5" 25 cal. clearly shooting at 4:56, and probably before, and after also 5". The Thesher (SS-200) did only have a 3" 50 cal.

I noticed that the submariner seen at about the 7 minute mark was wearing a shirt with buttons that very obviously measure about 9/17ths of an inch wide but the actual uniform shirt authorized for a submariner of his rating utilized buttons measuring only 8/17ths of an inch wide.
