I am a tough old fireman, but the tears ran when they played O Come All Ye Faithful and Silent Night. Those days were the good times, even for submariners far from home, in harm's way. I love this episode above all the others. God bless them all.

The submarine writer Harry Homewood was a personal friend of mine for many wonderful years, and a mentor as was my father while he lived out a great life in Tucson, my hometown. In WW II, Harry served for eleven submarine patrol tours and campaigns. Following World War II, Harry became Chicago Bureau Chief for “Newsweek,” chief editorial writer for the “Chicago Sun-Times,” and for eleven years had his own weekly news program syndicated to thirty-two PBS television stations. Harry was the author of 6 books and lived with his wife in Tucson, until his death in 1984. On that day, I cried...for we lost one of a kind, a special friend to one and many.

I’ve read a lot about the submarine service and submarines. The danger these men faced, depth charges, bombs and strafing. It is frightening to read the story’s some of the men told. I had a grandfather who was a captain in a U-boat during WW1. I didn’t know about this until many years after his death. During WW2 he was in the merchant marine in the U.S.A.

I've never seen this before when they were all brand new back in the early 60's . By then this series was off the air . Even though these were filmed in the 50's . The thing is that I'm sure that one person who watched this had to be a young Irwin Allen . The opening scene of the surfacing sub keeps reminding me of the " USOS SeaView " in the original movie " Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea " starring Walter Pidgeon , Peter Lorre and two young actors Barbara Eden and Frankie Avalon Frankie sang the opening song " Come With Me on a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea "

I heard the same in a documentary that I watched just a few hours ago, written by a survivor of the attack. Unfortunately in war it isn’t possible to know what was onboard, be it POWs, cargo, troops, so unfortunately sometimes the victims are in the wrong place at the wrong time, but the target had to be sunk so it could not be used again. RIP, Lest We Forget.

Seems like all that cigarette smoking in a confined area would foul the air pretty quick. Smoking on duty and in front of sensitive electronic instruments as seen on other episodes? I doubt it is allowed now.
@cryptickcryptick22415 жыл бұрын
It certainly is different from culture today. While these shows depict the submariners underwater, I have read they spent like 90% of the time on the surface, and frequently that was running the engines. The engines pulled air from inside the sub, (which had the effected of ventilating the ship quite well. The Boats and the Sailers Stunk. There was deseil smell everywhere, sailors took baths like once a week. (Cooks and mechanics were the only ones that got them more often.) During most of WW2 submarines did not have air-conditioning, which resulted in humidity problems and condensation this was hard on the equipment. Given those conditions, a little smoke may not have made so much difference.
@johnemerson13635 жыл бұрын
Hasn't been allowed for years. Subs don't carry tobacco in the ships store. Even on the big ships smoking is frowned upon. I smoked when I joined in 1962 and quit in 1965. Haven't smoked in over 50 years.
@tomservo53474 жыл бұрын
I thought later in the war because of the condensation problems frying electronics, air conditioners were installed along with air purifiers.
