Much has been made over the years of the incidents involving the destroyer USS William D. Porter, and while it is true that the ship did accidentally launch a live torpedo at the battleship Iowa while she was carrying the President of the United States, the only other factual evidence of hard luck was her sinking. All of the other supposed incidents that have shaped the ship's reputation for bad luck over the years have very little, if any, actual compelling evidence of occurring. In reality, the Willie Dee was not as unlucky as it seems and her crew fought just as hard as any other crew in the waters of the western Pacific and they deserve to be remembered for that rather than of bunch of mishaps that do not appear to have actually occurred.

The Fletchers were a beautiful class of ship. The Willy D. is always a good story, even with the actual facts.

Do one of these Bios on my dad’s ship, USS HICKOX DD-673. You’ll all be amazed at what she did and how she survived. She earned 9 battle stars and a unit commendation for her role during the bombing of the carrier USS FRANKLIN. Look it up on KZfaq

Even with that one actual fuckup, she was probably a far better and more strategically viable ship for the buck than the friendly battleship she accidentally torpedoed.

FYI: My uncles DD, also a Fletcher, also served in the Aleutians for at least 6 months. So it was nothing special.

The round on the base was in the Base commander's log.

You assume no mention in the ship's log means it didn't happen. The Navy is not going to report mishaps if they can be swept under the rug. When at war it is bad for moral, bad for security should it leak back. I have seen several sources sited on some you discount because they were not in the wartime logs. The sources included former crew and brass in personal journals.
