The large "Velociraptors" in Stephen Spielberg's Jurassic Park were based on Deinonychus antirrhopus (which science advisor Gregory S. Paul classified as a species of Velociraptor), with a slightly exaggerated size for movie purposes. The recent discovery of the new genus Utahraptor gave the filmmakers a convenient excuse for the movie raptors' size. The funny thing is, now that more fossils of Utahraptor have been found, it turns out to have such insane proportions that it leaves the raptors of Jurassic Park/World in the dust.

I would also like to imagine that, in an alternate universe where Utahraptor coexisted with Ancient/Medieval humans (and their bestiaries erroneously portrayed the Utahraptor's wings and clawed hands as two separate limbs, like with bats sometimes), encountering such a beast would have been the closest thing to meeting a real-life mythical griffin.

@@Insert_name_here2024 From what I heard, Crichton and Spielberg’s raptors were inspired by both Deinonychus and (what would eventually be named) Achillobator being briefly synonymized with the Velociraptor genus by certain theorists. The Jurassic Park raptors are basically a combination of the Velociraptor’s name, the Deinonychus’ appearance, the Achillobator’s size (in between Deinonychus and Utahraptor), and all three species’ native regions (such as Dr. Grant digging up a “Velociraptor” in Montana, where Deinonychus lived).

We also unearthed a complete specimen recently that showcased that utahraptor had a skull more similar to something like a Trex than a deinonychus. Before then, we didnt have a complete skull specimen so we reconstructed it using relatives as a metric This implies that while other raptors were more of a jack of all trades predator, utahraptors put more emphasis on power and bit force and most likely hunted bigger prey

@@joelww2501 At the time of his writing, there were weird theories about Deinonychus being reclassified as a species of Velociraptor. This was because before the Soviet Union fell in 1991 not much was actually know about Velociraptor in the west, as Mongolia was Soviet aligned, and Michael was writing in the 80s. This meant for awhile what we knew of Velociraptor mostly was based of of assumptions on Deinonychus. Achillobator was named way later in the 90's, but Chrichton would have heard of it as, by way of news article, scientific publication, or book a large Velociraptor/Velociraptor-related dinosaur being discovered in Mongolia. This is why they still come from Mongolia in the books and games. Not to mention that because so little was know about either of them Chrichton could have assumed *Achillobator* was *Velociraptor*.

Utahraptor must be comparable to Dilophosaurus and Ceratosaurus in size. And so must Dilophosaurus. No stupid frills, it's a murder cassowary bigger than a big horse.

Weren't the JP raptors based off deinonychus tho
@jacobcox4565
@jacobcox4565 6 ай бұрын
Yes, you can also see a Deinonychus skeleton being compared to the Velociraptor and Utahraptor skeletons in the beginning. People just keep comparing the JP Velociraptors to Utahraptor because they're both big. There's also a lot of misinformation saying that the JP Velociraptors were based on Utahraptor, which isn't true because Utahraptor was described when the film was just about ready to be released into theaters.
