Good episode Steve, like you said I things it’s a very personal thing/situation ie have family, or just you and the misses or just a single fella. I went down the ute option with 1100mm canopy and 600mm tray. I find it works perfect for me firewood, chainsaw, extra gear, deer meat in the tray and everything else in the canopy safe and secured. For overall storage a canopy setup is 100% a better option and for long term touring or just soft roading like those QLD bunch 😝. It’s an ideal setup.

Great video Steve, I have just gone back to a wagon from a dual cab with tub/canopy setup and totally had to rethink how have our setup for touring / camping trips, did most the work myself so can be done cheaply if you have the skills (P.S did have a few design changes along the way🤦‍♂️) . But as you said it's horses for courses and individual choice and what you want to do 👍

Wagon all day - the Wagon IS the canopy. Just that you have the added luxury of convenience. Some of the wagon set ups that are coming out now are shitting all over canopy set ups and will continue to do so.

the old fireball whisky, I have a camping tradition when anyone comes camping with me, once we sit down for our fire, we all take a shot of it. So I always have a bottle in my camp kit.

I think a lot of it comes down to the individual vehicle and how the person uses it. My biggest pet hates for wagons vs ute setups are the access points. On a wagon you can put in gull-wing style doors in the sides but this is an added cost and are still not as good as a ute side that lifts up. The ute sides that lift up can be used as an awning especially for a quick stop. My personal preference would be a ute with a canopy that is removable but the cost is pretty extreme compared to a wagon. I do think one downside with most ute canopies is going from side to side for access where as a wagon is out of the back which is usually more central but there are pros and cons both ways. A really good video with some good questions for people to ask themselves before buying a vehicle for camping/touring.

Thanks for the feedback buddy. I personally prefer a wagon but I know heaps of others that prefer utes so you are absolutely right in saying it comes down to how you want to use it.

Couldn't agree more with this, i would love a ute with canopy but what i want would cost a fortune, got a Wagon and it works fantastic, as long as you put a fold down table on the rear door (If it isn't a lift up or split one) then you are mostly set. I went vertical fridge in the back on top the drawers meaning no heavy slides or moving stuff, works well and can access stuff without digging deep. Wagons are also instantly water and dust proof, many cheap canopies are meh.

Great honest comparison guys - after 10 Subarus (popup rear tailgate 👍🏻) I’ve finally moved onto to a Hilux 4WD as a retirement gift to myself - because I wanted a vehicle that’s a daily drive (once a week), something for carting around domestic and gardening/rubbish materials plus an off-road tourer a ute with aluminium tray/liftoff canopy was a no-brainer - now that all my Covid-delayed items (6 mths) have arrived I’m planning my summer fit-out project - Redarc, Renogy, Engel, 23Zero and Amptron Lithium - doing my own electrical installation - total cost including ‘Gumtree’ tray and new canopy/fit-out $7k - John in SA

Love the homemade setup and great comparison video mate. Just a thought for the drawer setup, have you considered switching your tool and pantry drawers around? If your tools are on the bottom drawer, not only are you keeping heavy bulky items down low, you're less likely to have to open the bottom drawer during cooking/prep. This should allow you to make more use of the tailgate as bench space. Just a suggestion

Hey buddy. I did toy with have the tools down low and cooking up top but the wife’s pretty short and can’t reach into the top drawer. Having said that she doesn’t come camping that often so it prolly wouldn’t matter all that much now that I think about it. I might trial it for a while and see how it all goes

Great show but in the end it really depends what overall usage you want to make of the truck. I’m a professional so I don’t have a double usage for my truck only to pack it up and go out camping for a few days or more. I love both wagons and utes but in the end prefer the versatility of the wagon. Saying that I’ve seen some beautifully decked out dual cabs for touring which I wouldn’t have said no to. Maybe it’s like Ford v Holden , land cruiser v patrol and now wagon v dual cab. I suppose the answer is get one of each(once he COVID tax is removed)! Enjoy your off road driving!

Got one in the Prado, would never go back to chest. But i will let you know the drawbacks i have, blocks half the rear view through back window and lets out more cold air every open. But overall still better imo.

Very informative video! Gvm plays a big part when it comes to a touring vehicle, wagons have about 600kgs to play with whereas a Ute has 900kgs, something to consider when purchasing a vehicle for touring

Always good to see different set ups. Just wondering where you keep your recovery gear and tools? Owning a 200 myself l know we don't use it much but we can't just leave those Nissan drivers out there it just makes a mess.

All of my tools go in the top drawer. I store a strap in the tailgate section of the lower gate and then if I’ve got anything else it gets jammed down beside the drawers in that big cavity.

great topic Steve, I have run setup 1 and 3 over the years, obviously 3 before 1 as kids pretty much destroy that...lol... there are so many options now for everyone, hard to cut through the crap. this will give some good advice to the young players. I think you next upgrade need to be some wings on the side to get to those small spaces. all for the nip of rum to help the little buggers sleep....lol... not really, just joking, that was my parents...lol.

I have a Rodeo Dual cab with tub/canopy. Roof storage wins over the wagon. 75kg over the cab and 150kg over the canopy. Roof box up front that is dust and water proof for clothes. Solar panel and swags over the canopy with the 270 awning. Love touring

Great video; elephant in the room though is overall weight including axle limits. Dual cabs are notorious for hitting their GVM once you put a tray & canopy on the back and with so much load rear of the rear axle there’s a risk of bending..?

A proper camping trailer is simply the best set up. End of story. No excess weight on daily driving and no issues with overloading gvm. Also don’t need to pack and unpack every time you want to go out. Also you can disconnect at base camp and shoot into town or do some off-roading without having to pack up camp.

I like both as well had utes and wagons, have an 80 now, love the Drifta setup and emu wings on the side for mine, my issue is with allot of highlights on GVM lately seeing this Ute can’t help but think he’s got allot more weight extra weight carrying around, that’d the down side I see of a Ute system is the temptation to take too much stuff and overload the vehicle, esp of its a dual setup like a daily etc, mine isn’t so I only take what I need not what I want, I enjoy trips more if I have less, but enough to cover if things go wrong. But more and more setups I see, really think allot of people are over weight limits and IMO it’s an increasing issue. But good comparison sic setups all the same. 🤘

Car weighs in fully loaded at 2.8 if I’m really packing it up. But most of the time I only pack stuff into the drawers and whatever doesn’t fit rarely gets put in other then chairs, swag and camera gear. And if going away on a trip most of the time half the canopy is empty with all my tools taken out. I come in on par or lighter then your average tub and canopy set up but with much more usable space 🤙🏽

I enjoyed this comparison. Still can't decide which I prefer though. Truth is, there is no perfect set up. Each to their own really. I for example have to also consider a dog coming on many of my trips.

That ones from crashpad but I’d recommend the Kelmatt version of the bag as it’s better made and actually Australian made unlike crashpad gear

Currently I run my 200w panel on my canopy roof rack on the Nav while waiting for my roof rack to be built. Canopy rack is built to hold a couple hundred kilos for building material and that

Just wondering why the gas bottle was inside the vehicle instead of outside it, in the last vehicle shown? Having seen the end result of vehicles destroyed by leaking bottles and also the risk of a loose bottle in an accident. Loving the channel so far, some great ideas, tips and tricks.

No one touched on sleeping arrangements, though option three showed the RTT. Do you guys use swags, where do you put them, or RTTs? Otherwise it helped get a few of my thoughts in a line. thanks

Generally we use swags. Toms fits inside he’s canopy but I generally chuck mine on the roof in a waterproof bag.

The lights had a sticky backing which I just stuck to the roof lining. Double sided tape would do the same trick.

Hahaha. I know the feeling buddy. This was filmed a few months back during that super short period we were allowed to go camping. We prolly should of been warring mask 😷 I’ll concede that one. Hopefully not to much longer and we can all head out together again.

Bet I can chuck gear in and get gear out of my Hilux Ute tub in a tiny fraction of the time it takes to pack such a constricted pokey space in the back of a wagon. For me that's really it - ease of use.

Both have there pros and cons ( which is why we made the video ). Everyone has their own needs and requirements for their own camping setup.

Canopies weigh approximately 250kg which immediately comes of your payload, and is why they hit GVM too easily. Most of the weight is on or behind the rear axle, which is not ideal Your towing is limited as the overhung load on the tow ball is much greater than a wagon Wagons come with comfortable coil springs (in most cases) which can be stiffened up with air bags I tow a boat to remote fishing destinations, so most gear is on a full length roof rack or in the boat, freeing up the space in the wagon Each to their own

Canopy is 175kg with all draw system included Ans tray is 30kg lighter then the tub. Fully loaded with all my tools and a weeks worth of stuff for camping I come in at 2.8 as I’ve tried to keep storage space to a minimum to reduce over packing. Certainly heavier stuff out there full of stuff not needed or wasting valuable space 🤙🏽

Quite honestly, who gives a shit. I have nothing against your video or comparison, but hasn't all of this 4x4 setup crap gone too far? Just like you said at the end of the vid, you don't need any of that to get out in the bush and have a good time. You actually don't even need the 4be! And to spend $25k+ on a setup, on top of the car, when you're so young?! Money well spent? 🤔
