On the 10th + 11th of October 2020 I went on a bike adventure along the Durham Region section of the The Great Trail (aka the Trans Canada Trail), from Pickering north to Uxbridge, east to Lindsay and then south to Oshawa via Port Perry. The 44km Uxbridge to Lindsay Rail Trail was the highlight of the ride, it was a spectacularly scenic and well-maintained dedicated gravel hiking & biking path that I'd recommend to anyone!

Those stuffed animals were creepy AF! I just posted a video on my channel of a creepy headless doll I came across (on this trail!) . You never know what you'll find out there! This section (Durham/Kawartha) of trail is home for me. Ride it all the time! Nice to see someone else's perspective. Glad you enjoyed it. :-)

I know right, super creepy! That section was gorgeous, I'd love to see more of it although I'm soon to move to Montreal. Thanks for getting in touch - about to watch your Blackwater Junction video.

The stuffed animals on Westney is pretty bizarre. A big climb on that section too. But once you get to the top it’s a great view looking back down south.

Thanks for your message Kevin, it's a marvellous trail, isn't it? I've since moved to Montreal and I'm aware of some similar rail trails here, not sure if I'll get a chance to check them out this year before it gets too cold but they're certainly on the list for next summer. Enjoy your riding!

We've been watching bike touring videos on youtube from many channels. There are ones touring famous trails in Europe and in Asia. Those places all offering all kinds of amazing sceneries. However, in terms of how interesting the videos are, yours are the best in our opinion. We really appreciate that you put lots of effort of making them fun and informative to watch. Wish you could make more of them! Maybe one to Hamilton? But I guess the outdoor season is kinda over now. Anyway great biking videos!

Wow, thank you so much for your kind comment, I’m really glad you enjoy my videos! Yeah it’s getting towards the end of the cycling season for this year, shorter rides are ok but it’s pretty uncomfortable to do the long ones when it’s freezing outside. I’ll definitely do more next year though - Hamilton is a great idea! Thanks again

Wow that must have been an amazing your! Actually just this past Friday, I did a day cycling loop heading into Pickering, Uxbridge and Newmarket before cycling back to Toronto. And I have also cycled to Port Perry before, but that was back in the summer of 2019. Anyways, I love these videos dude, we should totally go on a cycling tour together once this pandemic subsides, I also live in Toronto too.

Have you done Uxbridge to Lindsay before? It's incredible. I've been told if you keep going from Lindsay to Peterborough it's a similar scenic trail

Dan Schaumann I’ve also cycled to Peterborough on Sunday June 28, 2020, but I’ve never cycled to Lindsay before, which was what I am actually planning to do next summer. I’ve checked the route on Google Maps from Uxbridge to Lindsay, and the quickest way to get there is through the Trans-Canada Trail, which is of course what you probably took to get to Lindsay. I’m also planning to go to destinations more southwestern like more in Haldimand County.

@@DanSchaumann Actually you get the same trail conditions all the way to Hastings. Once you hit Campbellford and beyond, conditions fall apart quickly. A wide tire (fat) bike would be better further out.

I'm looking to do the Uxbridge to Lindsay rail line this summer! So happy you made this video to give me a taste of what to expect. Having rode the trail yourself do you think 700x28c tires are enough for the job?

Hey! I'm glad you enjoyed the video and I'm sure you'll have a great ride. I'm in Montreal these days, I miss the ON bike trails. I have 700x35c which seemed perfect for this kind of trip, but to be honest I don't know so much about differences in tire sizes and how they perform against each other. I'm sure you'll be ok but I guess you won't have as much grip on gravel as a wider tire.

Love the videos Dan, do you record everything on your phone in your hand or do you have a holder/clamp? I can never get my videos so steady when cycling. Cheers, Mike

Thanks Michael. I experimented a bit with a home-built phone holder for my first bike adventure but it was terrible so I just decided to film everything by hand

Torontonian cyclist now living last 25 years in Tokyo. Your videos are amazing - sad I never got a chance to ride these trails when I was back home. So incredible to see all the amazing sights and cool places you have come across in your rides. Sitting here with envy and regret that I never did bike touring back home. Closest was ride down to Niagara and back. Look forward to more. Hills - just have to ask. How long and what were the average gradient?

Hey John, thanks for your comment, I'm glad you enjoyed the videos. I guess you ride a bit around Japan? I've visited twice and had a blast, actually I was either going to move to Japan or Canada and I chose Canada in the end. The trails around Ontario are spectacular. I've since moved to Montreal and don't think I'll be able to do another multi-day ride before the winter but as soon as it warms up next year I have a few ideas. I checked the Strava route, there was a 10km section with a fairly steady 3.5% average, then the last km got closer to 6%. Max was 13.8%. I'm not so sure how challenging that's supposed to be but it certainly was for me.

@@DanSchaumann Hi Dan, cheers. I ride almost every weekend when possible. Usual rides ranges from 90 - 120 kilometers round trips or one-way with a train ride back to the nearest station to ride back home. The train ride back is pretty sweet as you can take on a challenging ride and know you can just put the bike in a bag (mandatory) and ride the train home. For example - I rode from my home in west end Tokyo to a seaside town called Odawara via Yokohama and Enoshima Island (popular touristy beach area) for about 120 kms and was able to hop on a regular train for an hour and half ride back for $10. Next up is to try and go beyond to a hot spring town another 25 kms out but gain over 1,000 meters. Try is the operative word as I am not a very good climber. Big difference from riding days back home where I had some nice racers is now I am riding a hybrid with 27.5 x 3.0 tires, 1 x 9 drivetrain and weight around 16.5 kgs. Back then also my riding weight was 65 kgs and now is around 78-79 kgs. Happens when you near 60 😢. Look forward to seeing more. Ride on old highway 7 is good as is Taunton in the east but then I have not lived in TO pretty much since 1994 (came back for a few years early on) so a lot has probably changed. Climbs - I am not a god climber but that looks challenging enough.
