The First East Turkestan Republic existed from November 12, 1933, to April 16, 1934, and the Second East Turkestan Republic existed between November 12, 1944, and December 22, 1949.[8] East Turkestan is a founding member of the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) formed in 1991, where it was represented by the World Uyghur Congress.[9] In September 2004, the East Turkistan Government in Exile was established in Washington, D.C.

Kuomintang leaders based in Dihua (Ürümqi) appealed to the long Chinese history in the region to justify its sovereignty over Xinjiang. In response, Soviet historians produced revisionist histories to help the ETR justify its own claims to sovereignty, with statements such as that the Uyghurs were the "most ancient Turkic people" that had contributed to world civilization.[25] In June 1946, the Soviet Union withdrew its support for the ETR.

At around the time Jesus was born, China was under Han Dynasty rule. During that time, China was facing grave threat from a northern nomadic people called “Hun” or “Xiongnu (匈奴)“. In order to form an alliance against the Huns, China sent an expedition to the west of the country called “Xiyu (西域)”, literally “Western realms” or “Western territories”. It is an area stretching from today’s Xinjiang all the way to Central Asia. That is the first time that that part of the world came into Chinese sight. After Han Dynasty, China witnessed many dynasties rise and fall, and China’s grip on Xinjiang resonated with the rise and fall of the central authorities too: When China was relatively stable and the central government was strong, it could manage to control Xinjiang, and when China was in internal chaos and the central government was weak, it usually lost control of that part of the country. It was so until late 19th century when Qing Dynasty sent in troops to crack down a secession attempt (backed by Russia) and signed a treaty with Russian empire, henceforth drawing a clear border line between China’s Xinjiang and Russia. And Republic of China inherited the province from Qing Dynasty, and People’s Republic of China inherited it from Republic of China, and changed its name into Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (新疆维吾尔自治区). Today, Xinjiang occupies approximately 1/6 of the entire land area of China, and is an important part of the country. It’s also a bridge between China and Central Asia. Besides Uyghurs, Xinjiang is also home to Kazakhs, Uzbeks, Tajiks, Kyrghizs, Mongols etc, as well as Han Chinese. By the way, China’s well-known products like silk and porcelain found their way to the Middle East and Europe through an ancient trading route called “Silk Road”, which is a by-product of Han Dynasty’s expedition in search for allies against the Huns. The two ends of Eurasia (China and Persia / Roman / Byzantine Empire) were able to learn about each other. Thanks to the Silk Road. Reference: Jack Zhao. “When did Xinjiang become a part of China?”
