I think the ending was bittersweet. Because even though they ultimately got caught up in the spiral, they were still together. I always had this dreadful feeling that either Shuichi or Kirie dies but none of them did and they managed to survive even from all the events that occured. All in all I’m just happy they were still together.

@@lettuce6321 the beauty of it is that instead of fearing it, they embrace that malevolent force out to get them, therefore making the force weaker as a result. It may be a bleak ending but in the face of a lovecraftian horror, all you can do is accept your fate

It also means whirlpool, which is the meaning they likely use in Naruto (after all, the Uzumaki clan is from the land of Whirlpools)

Uzumaki means spiral, hence since Naruto last name uzumaki, his clan logo/symbol is spiral, thus the name of junji it's manga since its all about spirals

i recently bought the actual book and read through it sooo worth dude its so good 600 pages of pure like pog drawings and stories and the reveal about the city in the end was just so cool also the way the stories linked together only those like lovers were a bit weird

In a grocery store a while back I saw someone with an Uzumaki hoodie on when I was browsing. It was a picture of that girl with the spiral in her head, kinda toward the beginning of the manga. I thought "small world". But kept walking. Then I got to the bakery section and saw these cinnamon bunches that had spiral shapes to them. There were 10 or 12 or so. I got an idea I wish I was able to film. I bought 3 of them, and hid my basket with my other groceries to the side where I would come back to it and kindaaa waiting for them to get in line somewhere so I could get right behind them. I tried to get in front of them but that would have been too hard. So basically I was only buying the spiral cinnamon. I struck up a conversation with them and immediately asked about spirals and asked the mother if she likes spirals. Got blank faces. Then I laid them out on the moving converter thing which the person uses to scan barcodes. Laid them 3 in a row and I just stared at them smiling and asking them over and over after a few pauses if they would like to stare at them with me as they would reveal the secrets to everything to them as they did to me. Finally, the girl with the hoodie finally got it and burst out laughing (to my relief as I was starting to feel awkward thinking maybe she is just picked up the hoodie because it looks cool). The mom just looked at me and I assume her daughter in disbelief and then just started ignoring me. The girl gave me a smile and thumbs up and walked off. Man I wish I had recorded it kinda, though recording strangers kinda feels unethical anyway. Btw I have always been the type to play pranks on friends so when the idea popped into my head I couldn't help myself.

Once I finished it and realized they left her brother on the edge of the cliff as he’s waiting for his sister to come back I got really sad. Ruined the book for me😂

This is my first manga of this type of genre, till now I've watched only shonen anime and read beserk and chainsaw man. This fucking traumatized me. It's just extremely blizzard, edgy and weird. I did get a warning from my friend, and I kinda like it and want to continue. It starts of as a weird spiral addiction to a whole dystopian apocalyptic end of town spiral kingdom shit
