+dacasman Its not that it looks impossible it just looks massively inefficient. Look at those fat flat rotor tips. We got rid of those on helicopters and the propellers on fixed with planes in the name of efficiency. That narrow rotor diameter creates a powerful downwash. Look at that dust plume. That narrow rotor diameter becomes comically large propellers in airplane mode. Inefficient. Its very short service history, however, seems to point out that its very well worth it. Just in CSR alone. This has over 3 times the mission radius of any helicopter I think.

@@HistoryShell1786 51 souls lost in Blackhawks in 2021 alone. It's interesting how the V22 has this deadly reputation according to the internet when so many other aircraft have actually had as many or more deaths associated with them. Nobody would hesitate to fly on a C-130 but they have been known to develop stress fractures in the air frame and propellers tend to fly off the engines and hit the airframe. 16 marines lost their lives in 2017 aboard a KC-130 after a propeller detached and damaged the plane. The V22 is complex and takes a lot of skill to pilot, but it's a safe aircraft.

Was working a job on west coast of Florida a week or so after Hurricane Ian hit and watched 5 Blackhawks and later 2 of these guys fly over taking personnel and aid down there. Couple days later spotted a CH-53 headed into the area..When you see the Osprey in flight you understand why they were developed, much faster and higher flying than conventional helicopters as well as increased range. Very Sci-fi and impressive looking in flight.

To answer original op question. These things fly much faster than conventional helicopters. They perform better in high/hot conditions. Hot weather is not good for traditional helicopters, but these perform much better. They can fly higher in helicopter mode. Good for mountainous areas like Afghanistan. These are used on the wasp and American class helicopters. The marines actually use these as refueling tankers out at sea for the wasp and American class deployments at sea. Troop carrier. Can carry smaller vehicles. Pretty flexible machine and the marines love em.

Consider this. If one engine fails there's a drive shaft inside the wing connected to a centralised gearbox in the fuselage that can then provision the remaining engine's torque equally across both prop/rotors. Can you imagine just how complex this mechanism is!? And imagine the maintenance requirements! Lots of chip detectors in that gear box and specialised cooling gear I would expect! Plus the mechanism to rotate the engine nacelles exactly in unison so left and right stay in perfect alignment while continuing to deliver torque through the previously mentioned drive shaft....well you have one incredibly complex piece of engineering. Amazing that it actually was completed and is in service!

We have an Air Force base in the next county (next state, actually, it's over the line) and we're about ten miles away from Camp David, so we have cargo planes flying into or out of the base right overhead every day. It used to be the big C-17's, but then they switched to the newer, more efficient cargo plane (sorry, I forget what exactly it is!) two years ago. But since I grew up on the flight path to Joint Base Andrews, it reminded me of those C-17s flying over our house and rattling my mom's china cabinet in the dining room. Anyway, I digress. Like I said, we're on the flight path to Camp David, so we sometimes get the big military helicopters flying overhead going to or from there, and last year we had a squadron of Ospreys flying over the school complex here (elementary, middle, and high schools are on the same grounds). Since they'd never flown in our area before, everybody was all "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot" about it wondering what they were. Now they're just another part of the low-flying air traffic that we're used to.

My only question is, how do these things perform in a single engine failure condition? Those wings are definitely too short to get enough lift to glide, can it still auto rotate down with two rotors?
@mmi8137

From what I have seen and heard. The good engine transfers power to the failed. Looking at these that is the first question I had.

you are correct corey, the aircraft has an interconnecting drive shaft system that transmits power from a single engine to both of the rotors if need be in a single engine failure situation -- USMC MV-22 Mech

Can a single engine still provide enough thrust for it to fly in forward facing rotor forward flight?

Believe or not when these things are in airplane mode those wings provide 100% of the lift so the engines are used for thrust. In vtol mode, is where single engine can be problematic

OMG - these planes are amazing. As a history and action movie buff I've been seeing them appear in some of the movies but didn't believe they were real until I did a bit of Wikipedia research. Their ability to multi task and be packed into an aircraft carrier is incredible - I'm frankly a little speechless :)

I live in Thetford forest and these things regularly fly over. Distinctive noise and two large red circles at the front during the night. Just last week driving home saw one hovering above the trees about two football pitches away. This was no helicopter and made me jump. Thankfully I kept control of the car.

The CMV-22B is the Navy’s long-range/medium-lift element of the intra-theater aerial logistics capability; it fulfills the Joint Force Maritime Component Commander (JFMCC) time-critical logistics air connector requirements by transporting personnel, mail and priority cargo from advance bases to the Seabase. Description The CMV-22B Osprey is a variant of the MV-22B and is the replacement for the C-2A Greyhound for the Carrier Onboard Delivery (COD) mission. The Osprey is a tiltrotor V/STOL aircraft that can takeoff and land as a helicopter but transit as a turboprop aircraft. It will provide the Navy with significant increases in capability and operational flexibility over the C-2A. CMV-22B operations can be either shore-based, “expeditionary”, or sea-based. The Osprey is a critical warfighting enabler, providing the time sensitive combat logistics needed to support combat operations. As compared to the MV-22B, the Navy variant has extended operational range, a beyond line-of-sight HF radio, improved fuel dump capability, a public address system for passengers, and an improved lighting system for cargo loading. The CMV-22B will be capable of transporting up to 6,000 pounds of cargo/personnel to a 1,150 NM range. The CMV-22B declared Initial Operational Capability (IOC) in 2021. While the Program of Record has 48 CMV-22 projected, the Navy currently plans to procure only 44 aircraft.

Everyone who said they saw a 4 or "Quadrotor" variant of an Osprey is lying. The Bell-Boeing "V44" or "QTR" was conceptualized and plans were drawn up, but the program was eventually scrapped because it wasn't deemed a necessary program. The only place one has ever been seen is on the Bell-Boeing project video outline, and in Transformers: Dark of the Moon, both of which were CGI.
