The Esprit engine has a flat plane crank its only 3.5 litres and puts out 350bhp stock…. Lotus couldn’t go for large nrs as the Renault gearboxes couldn’t handle the power.
@bobolulu761523 күн бұрын
Lotus didn't go for more power not because of the transmission, but for marketing reasons. The up and coming models had more power, so it would be foolish to put the esprit with the sage or more power to match the new vehicles. The UN1 box has no trouble holding the power. It seems that a few 5th gear failures from shaft overhang, labels every Renault box as weak, which they are not. Internet wives tales seem to be more popular than the facts.

"What kind of moron puts an anemic boat anchor into a sports car? " All the bean counters in nearly every car company, like GM for instance when they crippled the Fiero. It was designed to have a new high performance v6 made specifically for it, instead they put in the iron duke 4 cylinder that the small USPS delivery trucks used and then later an existing low power v6 from family cars they already had on the shelves.

How to make DeLorean handling even worse? Put a big heavy V8 in the rear instead of stock V6 :)
@Novusod26 күн бұрын
Modern 4cyl is more powerful than V8s from the 1980s. Nobody really needs a V8 anymore except for ego stroking.
@SLOBeachboy25 күн бұрын
First of all that Lotus V-8 is a pretty small displacement engine as V-8’s go and it does not weight much more than the stock engine. And secondly it will not make the car handle worse. It would make the car more tail heavy of course and therefore it would tend to oversteer more but that could be compensated for simply by using slightly wider wheels and tires on the rear. And you would need them to be wider anyway to transfer all that extra power to the road.
@SLOBeachboy25 күн бұрын
@@Novusod - While it would be correct to say that all modern engines have much more horsepower per liter than engines from the 80’s it is not be even remotely correct to say that all modern 4-cylinder engines are more powerful than all 80’s V-8 engines. By the way, I’m not a V-8 fan myself and all of the 19 cars I’ve owned have had 4-cylinder engines except for the 93 RX-7 which, had a rotary engine. Still, we should get our facts straight here.
@sandersson281322 күн бұрын
@@SLOBeachboyAmericans especially seem to get a truly pathetic amount of HP from large engines, especially in older cars. You could easily get a four/six cylinder engine in there which would make this infinitely better than a low power lazy V8.
