When he says the torque figures are exageratted due to the torque converter, he is not describing it accurately. The torque figures at the wheel are accurate and real at the wheels. The torque converter actually does increase the useable torque at the wheels, which is what actually matters. It may give confising results if you're trying to compare flywheel torque by measuring wheel torque, but when you're driving, wheel torque is all that matters.

only reason why big tyres speed things up is tread. reality you have less torque. more revs at the tyre and less on the motor overall. stock tyres have less revs and more torque as more revs from the motor. whole reason why people lower gear 4wds to get the torque curve etc better offroad, especially low down on bigger tyres. my point is that yeah bigger tyres will have something better in the end of the rev range going downhill. but getting up and go will suffer with larger tyres and stock gearing.

As someone from the US, I have to say those two trucks look mighty sharp and if I were able, wouldn't mind either one. Though the turbo 4 might be more of the work truck than the weekender for me, but there is something about a nice v8 that gives that ample power without really needing to strain hard that delivers surprisingly excellent mileage.

Sorry Jocko but I do have to pull you guys up on something. It's about the down hill decent in a manual. Firstly you should never be using the clutch on a hill decent, Tommy probably just got things confused there. Secondly putting larger tyres on will increase the speed of down hill decents as the rolling diameter is larger thus you will travel a longer distance per revolution of the hub. I'd love to see the 2.8 with an Auto Chiller installed.
@cyclemoto8744
@cyclemoto8744 2 ай бұрын
I too was confused about their comments at that point of the video. I thought they may have been referring to the auto when stating that 1st gear was too fast and larger tires are better to go slower. I only have 33 on my 76 manual and the ratio is still slower than any vehicle I've owned.
@KennyHepundjua-ff2fd

A lot of guys are forgetting that the 4-cyl 1GD-FTV 2.8 has been in production since 2015, in numerous vehicles. There are thousands upon thousands of very high mileage 1GD Hilux and Hiace out there in Asia in particular, also Aus. The motor is proven FFS, its not as if this is a new experiment now that its turned up in the Cruiser! Jeez, its even used in the Hino 200 trucks and Coaster buses! All this talk about how the 4-cyl will wear out blah blah, its just baloney. Toyota know what they’re doing, they’re not gonna go and screw the Land Cruiser reputation just for kicks. The V8 is old, inefficient and lazy. Time to move on.

Reasons: The 2.8 is a simpler motor and easier to work on than the VDJ78 I currently own. And I like the manual when towing and when crawling in 4wd. No auto trans that overheats and you get to pick the gear you need. Great engine braking.

Aren't towing mirrors mandatory across Australia? See so many passing through my home town or even when travelling myself no towing mirrors & no idea what's beside them / their van.

According to Toyota the 2.8 in the 70 has the following upgrades over the Hilux and prado 2.8: Larger radiator Larger fan Isolation crank pulley Water air cooler Larger steel sump compared to smaller alloy sump Redesigned oil pick up for steeper angles Engine Balance shaft Revised fuel filter and oil filter Stronger hoses and clamps for turbo inlet and cooler. Gearbox has a larger capacity steel sump pan compared to small alloy Gearbox has elevated breather with catch can 4.3.1 diff gears Tow/haul mode.

So really not much except the transmission ratio to account for any performance difference. And that's not that much.

@@mikezog1030I think the balance shaft will make a big difference when working hard. Also the larger capacity steel sumps are good. You don’t want shitty alloy and small oil capacity. Gearbox is beefed up . Also it is running the V8 transfer case, drive shafts and diffs.

Ronny Dahl has already tested his worked V8 against a factory 2.8. 2.8 smashed it. 2.8 used less diesel towing a big van than the V8 used not towing. V8 could only hold 80kph up steep hill. 2.8 held 100 up same hill.

i love hearing the complaints about the gaurds. That system has been in cars since around 2010ish. The tall soft brackets are designed to cushion the initial impact to a pedestrian should they be unfortunate enough to land on the car in the event of an accident.

Can someone clarify after just buying a new 79 series in the uk, it doesn’t have intermittent wipers in this normal. Not something I ever thought to look at when I test drove it 😅
