The first episode of Muscle Car Of The Week features a the very first 1969 Camaro with option package ZL-1, complete with the original all-aluminum 427 V8 and an amazing history. This is the first of 69 ZL-1 Camaros ever built, and was delivered to Fred Gibb Chevrolet on New Year's Eve in 1968. Gibb and his crew transformed the car into a drag race record setter, and drove the car in races all over the country. In this video, Charley Lillard takes us through the car and tells us the stories about the original car and its restoration. Today there are less than 40 original ZL-1 Camaros still in existence. The chute wasn’t required on gas, he once ran it on nitro; 7.35@209mph hence the chute being added. In ‘69, 69 ZL1 Camaros were built, but only 3 Corvettes. “A” body models (Chevelle/Impala) could be ordered as COPO, but not w/ZL1 option. It was a $4K option on Camaros, only a $3K option on Corvettes. This car is the Holy Grail of all ZL1’s.

Yeah the Camaro 1969 ZL-1 is one rare car, I believe box stock they made 550 hp on the dyno, i myself have never seen one first hand. Thanks Kevin

They had Dick Harrels Nova Bbc, Camaro Funny Car, at Super Chevy event at KCIR raceway INDEPENDENCE MO. About 2006, cars were all painted like this, it was incredible, ( KCIR has now been closed so rich politician/ realtor could sell homes around where the track was, now it is a field of weeds with a sign on it, so they can say its a park, Thank you Senator Claire Macaskill.)

Robert Cates that's a real shame they closed kcir I grew up in Kansas and still remember going out there in the late 60s seeing dick Harrell Kimball and Allan and all the great Chevy muscle cars was a memory I'll never forget

In my opinion, the 1969 ZL1 is the baddest Camaro ever built. The all aluminum ZL1 427 was rated at 450 horsepower, and weighed much less than any other big block Chevy engine. Had to be one of the fastest of all muscle cars. It's on my Mount Rushmore of Chevy muscle cars, along with the 1962 409 Bel Air/Biscayne, the 1969 L88 Corvette, and the 1970 LS6 Chevelle SS

I had a buddy in H.S. in the mid 70's who was acquaintances with another older guy who owned a '68 Camaro and was rumored to have a ZL1 engine that he somehow managed to acquire. I didn't know the intricacies of the chevy BBC at the time but I got a look at it in the guy's garage (he kept it in a non descript kind of out of the way garage with a barbed wire topped fence around it and the garage was clean enough to eat out of, so I felt like it was something very s[special)...it did have an aluminum block and heads and manifold. He started it for us and it sure did sound like a serious race car to me. I never saw him drive it though.

THANKS FOR THE VIDEO LINK. WOW. Back in 2012, this car auctioned with a starting bid of $150,000 and wound up selling to the highest bidder for $400,000. The car is probably worth even more by now, due to its racing history of setting track records and winning a championship in the AHRA Super Stock class.

Did I here him say the car was delivered as a column shift (auto I assume) car? Was it delivered with the aluminum 427 engine or some other pedestrian engine and all converted at Fred Gibb? I'm confused now.
