My first attempt at vacuum infusion doesn't go so well...

I’ve done a fair bit of composites work myself. I’ve experienced the same failures in infusion... What I learned is Resin viscosity is really important (be it VE or epoxy, you can’t just grab a typical wet lam system and infuse reliably. Get a system specifically for infusion) You already keyed into the leaks. The bag seal has to be perfect My thought on the resin pulling is that the layup you’ve chosen (double A side, so no breather) has allowed for the vac pressure to pull the bag down so tightly that it’s sealed itself off (or mostly as there was obviously still enough pressure differential to pull resin into the laminate). The resin pools at the inlet because the pressure differential there is very low (once you open the feed line, it’s basically the same as the resin cup, which is atmosphere). Not a big deal if you keep the pump going and can clamp off the feed line. There aren’t many channels into composites in a useful way. I think you are heading down the right track with your channel. Best of luck and looking forward to seeing what’s next

Thanks for another amazing video. Unlike other instruction videos, you include your failures, which teach valuable lessons. Thank you, keep up the great videos

A wise man told me that there are three types of people: Those that don't learn from their mistakes, those that learn from their mistakes, and those that learn from the mistakes of others. Thank you for sharing your mistakes with us. Your next part will be awesome. I'm certain of it.

I agree 100%. The only way forward involves screwing up a few times. That's why I thought this video worth sharing :)

Great video! Thanks for sharing the failure so we can avoid it! Just a thought, maybe a little less peel ply in the intake and a bit longer tube between the tacky tape and the fabric. It might give a bit faster resin flow and have more area for the bag to pull down around the tube. One more thought, some way of minimizing the tube movement on the intake while the resin is flowing, could have been part of the leak problem. Hope your new pump works better!

why you apply peel ply around the tubes? i am new ,i am trying to learn the basics

If you have a larger outlet flow medium than inlet, the the resin will not pool up as much at the inlet. I use green flow 77 for the inlet and spiral tube wrapped in peel ply for the outlet. You can also clamp off the inlet if it starts pooling until more resin has been infused through the part. Keep in mind though I've only been doing composite work for 1-2 years. But my technique seems to work.

couple of suggestion to fix your issues. you can use resin infusion mesh on top of the carbon fibre fabric and resin will flow from one end to the other like a river. i wouldnt connect those hoses from the sides, try to enter from the top on each side and wrap a good amount of tacky tape around the hose where bagging film and hose connects and its all done.

Great video man. I've been wanting to try my hand at vacuum infusion for awhile but I'm just not at that point yet. That being said, I don't know how you're planning on cutting that carbon fiber plate but in the past I've used a wet saw with fantastic results.

Wet saw works great. I'm going to be cutting it with my CNC. That'll be another video :)

it puffed up becouse .... either the vacum wasnt strong enough(that means ur pump isnt strong enough or you didnt seal it well) or your resin is to thick and just stops and goes really slow through the carboon and just stravels around it and goes straight into the exit pipe

Use flash breaker (vinyl) tape instead of masking tape to hold down anything under the bag. Masking tape will not stick to release-treated surfaces.

In this case the masking tape actually worked really well. But you're right that flash tape is the preferred choice.

Easy way to avoid expensive mistakes is to get a liquid filled vacuum gauge. Pull vacuum on the layup and document the vacuum pulled. Wait one hour. If the gauge one hour later has not moved then youre leak free and should move forward. Alternatively, you can buy an ultra sonic leak detector like Amprobe....its a novelty item but if you start to take this stuff seriously, youll want one. In terms of resin, you can heat your resin to lower its CPS. The stuff youre using looks to be generic Epon epoxy. Thats normally at 900 to 1000cps. Good infusion resin is around 400 or lower. With green flow media and some heat (to part A only) you can get normal laminating resin to move quickly. Just keep in mind it will cure faster.

Thanks for the tips. The resin is Resin Research Composite Pro 2050. They list a viscosity of 400-500 on their website.

Make a standard infusion layup on glass and make a plate. Cut it in 1/2 and glue the halfs together so you get a perfect finish ...

You have to use vacuum chamber. Vacuum chamber should be between the infusion bag and the vacuum pump. It absorbs vacuum pressure fluctuations once you opened the epoxy tube and makes the process smooth and more forgivable.

you dont need it if you time the resin harden time correctly but yes it is easyer and can help with the bubbles/ traped air
