Darth Vader from Portugal: Dressing up my Darth Vader Episode 3 costume... Quite a complicated and elaborate task, I'm afraid.
Available for apearences in thematic events.
F.A.Q:
Q: How tall are you?
A: I'm 1,76m which is about 5ft9.
Q: Aren't you a little short to impersonate Vader?
A: The actor who played Vader in the Original Trilogy was around 2m tall. Most people are not that tall... Not even the actor who played Vader in Episode III ROTS. However Christopher Reeve who played Superman was also more than 1,90m tall and I don't see anyone wondering whether someone needs to be that tall to dress as Superman. The answer is no! No one is to short to impersonate Vader, but the Armors manufacturers haven't so far made a resized version of Vader's armor. Available armors are the same size of the armor of the movies. This makes them look weird on anyone shorter than 2m tall.
Q: Is this the "Supreme Edition" Darth Vader costume?
A: No it is not!.. The Supreme Edition is a mass produced costume, made in factories. The materials of the "Supreme Edition" are cheaper and not movie accurate. This costume is a movie replica in true Argentinian leather and Fiberglass. The "Supreme Edition" is in plastic and faux-leather. The "Supreme Edition" costs around $750. This one cost around $3000 and was purchased from several different private props makers. True movie replicas artists.
Q: How much did your costume cost?
A: Around $3000 which includes the voice changer (not the voice changer in this video, the one in other videos I have).
Q: Are you a 501st Legion Member?
A: Yes, my ID is SL-9151, but I decided to change my status to "Inactive", since like any other big organization, the internal politics and intrigues inside the 501st Legion are really starting to smell bad, and not worth wasting one's time. Reminds of why I also had to resign from Environmental organizations in the past. when you spend more time arguing about internal intrigue, than working for the organization's original purpose... It's time to leave.

i like this helmet a lot! i don't know about the voice changer but the shape is perfect, i mean the eyes aren't too flat, the mouth part is not bulky at all, just perfect!!

Not really: I've explained... This is the same size of the movie. But since I'm not the same size of David Prowse, it looks bigger in me. Actually, a simple proof of what I'm saying is that if you look carefully and compare the mask with the shoulder armor, you'll notice they have exactly the same size ratio between them, as in Episode 3. You'll see that all the hard parts are slightly too big for me. Otherwise it's a great costume.

Yeah, it does look better on taller people. But the shoulders are important because they are proportionate to the helmet.

The hard parts (helmet, armor, etc...) are perfect for your size. The Leather suit and the cape, you'd have to order them tailored to your measures.

Wow, interesting. I had no idea the boot soles were so thick, but then again the character is actually about 6'8" or 2 meters tall according to the book. The shoulder piece is a bit too big. The cape is supposed to hang forward of the shoulders to almost cover him. Please don't take this the wrong way, but Darth Vader is really supposed to be played by someone over 1.83 meters (6') tall just because of how big the shoulder piece and helmet look. Sad in a way about how many little kids love Darth Vader. The character was a brutal killer.

Just check ebay for Vader Armor, Vader Helmet, Vader Costume, etc... And choose "higher price first" if you're looking for a costume of this build quality. This is a $3000 costume in the whole. It's fiberglass and true Argentinian leather. There are also expensive electronics for the voice changer (not this one but the one in my other video). If you want a cheaper (lower quality) version for around $700 USD, search ebay for "Supreme Vader" or "Vader Rubies". This is all the info you need.

Yes!.. Some people only buy these suits to dress them on a manequin and leave it there in a room standing. In fact, when you think of the price and it's fragility, it's the wisest thing to do.

With all that exageration in details on the defects list of my costume, I start wondering if you have wrote to Lucasfilms expressing your disapointment for incompetence like the one displayed everytime a shorter stuntman used the vader costume making the chest box come too close to the shoulder armour, like the scene where Vader chops Luke's hands off... Also have you told Hayden Christensen how much he needs to work out before he looks like David Prowse?

Olá Carlos, esta fantasia foi comprada a uma séria de diferentes fabricantes particulares de réplicas de filmes de Hollywood. Um da Noruega, outro dos EUA e outro da Argentina. Isto não é um fato como o da Rubies "Supreme Edition"... Esse é em plástico e napa. Este é em fibra de vidro e pele genuina... O q faz dele uma réplica quase perfeita do Episode 3. Well... You are so right, I even have a hard time talking about it. It was quite excentric of me to buy it but I've enjoyed the costume a lot on several ocasions and it was rewarding in the end. I already had to sell the shoulder plate, the shin guards, the belt and the light box... But I'll re-buy them soon and this time I'll search all around for smaller sized versions.

Well, yes... Inside the helmet in particular. Fortunately I use it mainly in October and February, when it's considerably cold. The body also sweats a bit because I always wear a lycra undersuit precisely to protect the leather a bit from my sweat. I have a fan inside the helmet that prevents it from fogging the lenses.

Remember that Vader was a 2.01 meters giant with mechanic parts and pure muscle, and remember also David Prowse, he was a culturist, it's hard to so much people to looklike that giant, Prowse. Btw nice costume.

Thanks! No, the one from Rubies is in plastic and faux leather and is a fabric series item. This one is handcrafted by private manufacturers in fiberglass (using aledgedly movie accurate molds) and custom taylored in true argentinian leather. It costs 5 times more.

Yes, that's the sound distortion device. I built that electronic kit myself, but I'm not satisfied with the distortion yet... It needs improvements. The breathing sound comes from another device, installed in the belt and wired up to a speaker in the mask.

Honestly, it was the fact how towering Darth Vader was that made him so iconic and frightening. Making him tall instantly gave him a sense of power and thus was feared in the films. Needless to ay he scared the shit out of me when i was little

1st: My costume was purchased from different manufacturers. (Argentina, USA, Norway...), most of them acquainted at eBay. The final price was around $2500 USD. 2nd: No, the shoulder armor never even comes close to fall off. It doesn't even move, with the ergonomic inside foam padding I added. You can see that in my other clip "Vader em Alcobaca", where I move around a lot. It's in "more from this user".

Unlike the supreme Edition costume, that comes with hindges, all these fan made fiberglass replicas of the shoulder/chest armor, come with the shoulder caps in separate pieces from the chest piece. There for you can create your own hindge system, and articulate it the way you want.

Sweet, nice to meet you too! SL-4339! Yeah that helm looks to be an original Porty, but it does the job for now, certainly not a bad helmet! Those MR ones are slick, though. As for the box, I'm not knowledgable on ROTS box makers, only ESB.

If you look at 0:09, the saber is there, wrapped in the cape... And there is also another saber (hilt only) on the sofa. I just forgot to pick it up after getting dressed...

Yes, it is! Chad Vader's is a Ruby's Supreme Edition costume. Molded plastic and faux leather... Unlike this one: fiberglass and true leather and, much more movie accurate. The chest box is the same, though...

I noticed the huge platform vader boots as well, nice touch. And actually, if I remember right Hayden was never in a vader suit. I think got someone else for the final shot of Vader screaming "NOOOOOOOOO" And then when they're on the star destroyer Vader towers over the emperor haha

@SSSoM3: I will explain, my friend: The Supremem Edition is a costume that mimics the one from the movie but it's made for mass production for the general public. The materials are plastic and faux leather. Costumes like this you see on the clip are REALLY like the one from the movies: They are made of fiberglass (not molded plastic) and true leather (not faux leather). Furthermore they are not mass produced they are made one by one and taylored to fit (the leather parts, not the fiberglass).

Because I always wear some lycra jumsuit under it... At the time, the Superman Returns outfit was the only one I had, lol... But these days I just wear a spandex black undersuit. This allows the Vader costume to be protected from sweat and will glide when you dress it.

Very true! Both the Helmet/Mask and the Shoulder armor are by Portumac (for those who understand about props makers). The dome in particular is too big for an Ep.III Vader because it was cast from an Ep.V mold. In fact it's even bigger than many Ep.V domes I've seen. This is specially true when you look at it sideways. My goal is to buy a Master Replicas Vader helmet (smaller sideways) and a downsized shoulder armor (available on ebay by a couple of props makers.

I used epoxi glue (araldite)on 4 points of the plastic square frame of the fan, and I glued it to the metal vent of the mask.

I'm 6'3"...and I'd LOVE to have this Vader outfit!! There was a girl in a cheaper version at Rue Morgues fear fest last year...she had on platform boots with about a ten inch heel on them...this would go great with the Yoda puppet I made a few months ago!! He's made of latex with glass eyes and rods to work his hands...I even sculpted little feet under his robe..hand punched his hair...

This is an Episode 3 armor replica. In episode 3, the shoulders caps are sort of fused with the remaining chest armor. If you look carefully in the beginning of the clip, the neck plate is on the sofa... But I just didn't put it because it's too hard to do it alone.

Around $3000 USD. The soft parts came from Argentina and were custom taylored. The hard parts came half from Norway and half from USA and they are 1:1 with the movie armor size, so it's not taylored to my size... Thus looking slightly disproportionate.

I bought it: 1. To have fun 2. To incarnate my favorite Star Wars character 3. To do thematic public appearances and charity work I also happen to be a 501st Legion Member (google it, if you wish further info). But that took place 4 years after I bought the costume so, it wasn't a purpose for buying the costume. Rather a consequence, I would say.

I'm glad you like the costume! There are two version of this costume you can buy: 1. The Rubies Supreme Edition Vader Costume - This one is between $500 and $750 and you can find on stores online. The materials are not so great (plastic and faux leather), but it's pretty decent. 2. The costume such as mine - This is bought from several different private manufacturers on ebay. Just search on eBay for "Vader Armor". One fo these manufacturers leaves in the Phillipines, I believe. Cheers!

Always good to read pertinent comments, which are a minoroty here... ;-) Yes, music would make it a lot better i suppose. As I have stated here before. DV costume is divided into hard and soft parts. The soft parts of this costume have been custom taylored for me. The hard parts are fiberglass 1:1 sized with the movie hard parts that David Prowse wore (He's more than 2m tall). However, I've already sold them since I found someone who can make fiberglass props to my size.

I suppose you can try that. You can put risers inside the boots and also extra sole and heel... Just make sure it isn't too noticeable. Quite frankly that is one thing I am not really satisfied yet, about my costume.

Well, I recommend fine polish. Don't use anything that would leave the helmet greasy, or dust will stick on it, further scratching it.

@Myserieden: Oh no... This is indeed a two piece helmet. The helmet and the mask are separate. However this is indeed a bit big. even the Master Replicas version is a bit smaller. The MAsk is the same size of the MR but, the dome(helmet) is bigger in this case, which doesn't help since I'm only 5ft 9. The shoulders are also too big as you say. But I've bought a new slightly smaller version as you can see in my other clips. I will be buying an even smaller one soon.

Lot's of different places. Private collectors, eBay, online stores, proffessional taylors. Basicly, I tried to built it up piece by piece choosing the best of which provider had to offer. It can still be reasonably improved, though.

+DJ MoFLY Not true. I'm 5ft9 and I've seen way shorter vaders out there. Including the stunt guy who actually plays Vader is the so famous "I am your father" scene. Check that video from ESB and you'll see how off scale the armor looks. A way to see that is the distance between Chest armor/chest box/belt. You'll see in that guy that they are so close to each other, they overlap.

I to III) was merely 6ft, his name is Hayden Christensen and just like me, he had to have talons inside his boots and several other ways of making him look taller. But he was a shorter Vader. I am 5ft 9 myself, so I'm slightly even smaller but as much smaller as it may seem on this vdeo. Just one inch less.

No... The suit was actually taylored to my size, as you can see when I dress it. However, if you mean the Armor (hard parts), then yes... Most people are not tall enough for them since they were made to fit a 2m tall person like David Prowse.

I bought this costume on Ebay from several different movie props makers. Just make a search there and you'll find them. But if you want something this quality (fiberglass, true leather, etc... You'll need to sort your search results by "highest price first". ;) It cost me around $3000 total at the time but, now it's reasonably cheaper.

There you go... a pertinent comment and one which I haven't answered before: If you look closer in the beginning of the clip, I have padded the interior of the shoulder armor with foam, which keeps it seized in place.
