This is the reason Japanese '80s pop was so rich in sound. It's borrowed heavily from Foundational Afro-Centric American music just sung in Japanese. African American and Japanese people share a rich history of nearly two hundred years of transnational engagement and activity. African American writers discussed Japan as early as 1828, and, in the African American and abolitionist press, the 1860 Japanese Embassy to the United States inspired a perception of transnational solidarity between African American and Japanese people based on the shared experience of racial prejudice and the right of all men to participate in the affairs of the world. From the 16th century to the early 19th century, Japanese ideas surrounding Blackness were very different from the racial ideologies prevalent in Europe and later the United States. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, many Japanese intellectuals were inspired by the African American struggle for civil rights, as well as their transnational engagement with African American people, to promote anti-imperialism within Japan. Meanwhile, in the 1930s, pro-Japanese organizations proliferated across the United States and influenced tens of thousands of African American people. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor ended much, but not all, African American sympathy for Japan. The FBI was concerned that Japanese military agents would racially agitate African American people into subversive activity.

Afro-American pop, rock, jazz, and R&B with a touch of disco sung in Japanese in the 1980s. Nice. I recognize some of the songs being sung although they are sung in a different language. Some songs are actually from the 1970s. So many sacrifices and much suffering was endured to share their music so it's a blessing to know many around the world enjoyed it so much as well.

It took a judge to drag out his truth unfortunately many old school artist did not have the funds to fight their cases like Marvin Gaye's family. Do not attempt to argue a point on a topic that is foreign to you. Go Get Educated,. By the way, the Japanese also used to style their hair to resemble Afros..

@@simplyphenomenal695 Nothing about this music is Japanese. It's literally Black American Funk, Jazz, Disco, RNB etc sung in the Japanese language. This is my first time listening to Japanese city pop. Japanese music is underrated!

Heavily. It's always K-Pop that steals J-Pop's thunder. Honestly, may be just me, but K-Pop is highly overrated

@Sora-ING But animes in the 80s and 90s had this kind of music. 😂 I think it died down and gave way for Kawaii Pop, Nu Metal, and Emo/Indie scenes over time.

It almost hurts that music from ~40 years ago sounds more futuristic and optimistic than things now. This is like an invitation to a parallel world where people can stare out to days ahead, and have joyful and hopeful thoughts come naturally to their hearts. バブル経済が弾ける前の日本はもう失われた異世界みたいな幻になちゃったって切ないさ〜。幸せは手の中に奪えるままに、現代のことが思い出せると、心のほころびが癒せない気がします。

I'm Japanese. When you listen to City Pop, you can see the scenery of driving on the road where you can see Tokyo Tower.
