As a Filipino, Vietnam has left a lasting impact on me. Despite its troubled history, the country's remarkable economic growth and stability truly stand out. On the other hand, the Philippines still faces various challenges in terms of development and security. Vietnam, however, seems like the perfect place for a peaceful retirement due to its potential for long-term stability. It's worth mentioning that the Philippines heavily relies on rice imports from Vietnam, which raises concerns about food security. Additionally, the different approaches taken by the two countries in handling the Covid-19 pandemic highlight their contrasting strategies and how their leaders prioritize their people. While the Philippines can be a suitable retirement option for those with substantial savings, Vietnam appears to be a more appealing choice for middle-class retirees.

The Philippines is still a 3rd world poverty country because of rampant corrutpion, that is killing the country from progressing and shunning away major investors, major companies, most are flocking to Vietnam and Thailand. The Philippines main export is slave labor, it imports 99% of products are from China who dumps nothing but garbage food to the Philippines.

Deciding which of the 2 countries to retire in is difficult. I have been to the Philippines 5 times, soon to be 6 but so far have never seen a city I think would be good for me. Last year i spent 5 nights in Bangkok and 10 nights in Da Nang and I was so impressed with Da Nang and even though I was not thinking of moving there, I could see myself been very happy there. I could imagine riding a push bike down by the sea, playing golf, spending time in the Gym and exploring more of Vietnam. I loved the city, the people, the coffee and the delicious food and having a lovely beach there makes it ideal.

I've traveled and lived in many different countries, one thing I can say is, yes some countries have better food, have better infrastructure and may be a little cheaper, but one thing I can say is the way the people treat you, and how friendly the people are and how social they are and welcoming and warm and helpful to complete strangers. The Philippines wins by a landslide, hands down. Most places I've traveled the people tolerate you and it shows, and they don't want you to live there long term, the Philippines and Panama are two places where you can feel at home and the people will look after you, Philippines is a great home base

Totally agree about the language and communication, Dan. Myself, I would rather be in a more authentic surrounding, where pointing to this or that and simple "thank you"s and smiles are understood. When I was talking with a British friend of mine in Bangkok, I mentioned how marrying a Thai woman could mean she could talk about things with her friends and family right in front of you without you knowing what they're saying. He said, true, but maybe that's a good thing to not understand and not have to be involved with or worry about. So true. :)

Nice video guys. I would add from a 1000ft perspective geared torwards westerners who have never been to SE Asia or left their country before. I would recommend visiting PH 1st because of the english speaking population and christian based society along with abundant nature scenery. However for settling down I would recommend VN due to 2 major factors: cuisine & security. So for a win-win scenario coming from an older westerner's point of view, go to PH 1st, marry a younger PH women, then move to VN to retire there. She'll be very happy as she is always a couple hours plane trip away from her large family.

I can see why you guys liked Da Nang. Lots of vegan restaurants and apartment hotels around. That apartment you found was on a nice quiet street close to everything. My Khe is one of the nicest beaches I have ever seen. Next time you go back there, check out the area on the riverside. A lot less touristy. Nice riverside walks. Probably better during rainy season where you won't get that cold breeze off the ocean. It was only about a 20 minute walk to the ocean and the main tourist area.

Hi qiang and dan as a malaysian and neutral , here are my observations of both. 1. Usually land locked countries are more developed compared to islands. Goods and services flow easily. 2. With software and hardware like time kettle, language barrier becomes lesser in non English speaking countries. 3. If in malaysia a jab cost usd 100, next day the pm must resign. Yes malaysia is top 3 in medical tourism if not no 1. 4. Agree, vietnamese food is healthier. Philippine food (native), is limited in choice. I am not talking about western food offered in Philippines. 5. It is expensive moving around in Philippines. Ferries then buses then planes. Never ending. 6. Americans go there to find girls for relationship in Philippines. Fact. 7. I would say beaches are better in the Philippines if you like beaches and water activities. 8. Traffic - both countries are chaotic.

I agree with your comments about language. Learn the basics, yes. It simplifies your life as you are in a new place with many things to learn. It also helps protect your privacy from those seeking useful information about you. Plus people are the same wherever you go. You are no better than them and visa versa. The petty talk is the same everywhere and best avoided. I would add that local made coffee in Dalat was amazing.

Vietnam would have been at peace in 1954, after the Paris Agreement was signed and there would have been an election with 99% of Ho Chi Minh winning. Useful video, thank you! 🙏👍 Three questions: 1. Which of these two countries is more safe, less people trying to scam foreigners, less ATM fraud, more honest police, etc. Who basically wins for overall personal/economic safety?; 2. Which country has a more tourist-friendly infrastructure (credit cards widely accepted, lower ATM fees, higher max USD equivalent cash withdrawl limit at ATMs, better transit networks connecting cities, mobile phone pricing/coverage, etc.? Which is basically more convienient for tourists?; 3. Which country has better sanitation and less pollution/litter?

English speaking made it easy for sure. I just came back from Panama and Medianan Colombia. Mediana is beautiful and has amazing weather but safety is a concern. Panama is great but very pricey. Hi Jackie, I am Canadian by birth and have resided in SE Asia for several decades now, primarily Viet Nam. Non Vietnamese are not allowed to own raw land (however laws are becoming easier in that regard) Land is Also decreasing in price, so land lease prices will reflect that. Lom Doung province is an area you should look into, it's the best area for someone from your geographic background. Da Lat, would be a good place to start from... you can spiral out from there (Da Lat is expensive) however it's close to many mountious areas that adventurous westerns are migrating too. 3k a month is a substantial amount of monies to live on here, even in a major city... it's a small fortune in the countryside... Vietnam has upgraded its banking systems vigorously over the years and it is very much first world here in many regards. Vietnam will join the BRICS+ Nations soon and we have become quite independent from the Global North. we are arguably the most stable country in Asia which is why we have become one of the fastest growing economy's in Asia There is pollution issues in Hanio, and since more manufacturers have moved from China to Vietnam (primarily to the province of Dong Nai) Saigon is showing the stress from that, but you will be a long way from any of those big city issues. Spend a year looking around, lots to see and experience. My wife and I spent a few years building a house in Lom Doung and it was a blast... Good luck and fortune to you and your family...

Spent 3 months over winter '19-'20 riding a wiggly lap around all Vietnam north to south. Spent a YEAR riding circles slowly around most of the PH's main islands, then tried to retire there for 4 more years until sick of it. My summary: Vietnam is cheaper, cleaner, more organized, but the food outside cities is boring. And an old expat ain't gonna have a 21 year old hottie unless he is paying lots. The Vietnamese in general are not nearly as welcoming or friendly as Pinoys. The Philippines has one overriding benefit, Poontang. A 30 year age gap is quite common for a night or a wedding. The English is a definite bonus as is the visa issue. BUT, the local food absolutely sucks, worst in Asia, though cities will have lots of western places. Many things are kind of expensive, like hotels, petrol. electricity, OR its fairly incompetent, such as water systems, wifi, power grid, restaurant service, health care, driving, school system, etc.. The PH is still in the 3rd world while Vietnam is not. But the Filipinas are the hottest girls on the planet. Try both, but do not sell your house back home.
