@@UmdogTR YES, your mindset is the key! read a book of Victor Frankl and how he survived Auschwitz in 1944. The things that helped Frankl survive were: Imagining conversing with his wife (who he didn't know if she was alive) whilst doing backbreaking work and being bullied by guards. To see things in a humorous light even if only for a few seconds.

he IS wealthy on a global scale, he is leveraging the privilege of his birth. Basically you work a well paid blue collar job in Australia like mining for 5-7 years living frugally and saving, save up maybe 250K USD, build an extremely safe and diversified investment portfolio paying out 5% a year, withdraw only 2% and you get to live like him basically exploiting the abject poverty of Sri lanka paying next to nothing for basic goods and services until you die. Meanwhile someone in Sri lanka with a similar blue collar job for 40 years will live in poverty for their entire life

I keep telling everyone at work, I'm probably going to retire early and go overseas and they just laugh, and laugh, and laugh because they think I'm joking. But, I'm not. The guy who sits next to me is in somewhat similar circumstances. He lost a lot of jobs due to financial recessions and so he has only been at this job about 7 years and he says "I will probably have to work until I die." and I say to hell with that! I have been there 6 years and get vested in the pension at 10. I won't have a lot of years, but I'll get about $1100 per month. Add to that SS, if we still get it, which I hope we do, and I'll be golden in someplace like Sri Lanka or the Philippines. And I'll enjoy the water and the sunsets and maybe have a few beers, but I don't drink anywhere near like I did when young, so I'll keep it under control.

Moving overseas sounds crazy to people who are rooted and comfortable in their house and town with family and friends around. Maybe they are normal. People like you are the black sheep, who for reasons of adventure or survival are willing to consider all their options and make a right turn in their life path. It is not for everyone, and you may find it doesn't suit you, so don't burn the bridges, and have a plan b for life back home. Dan covers a lot of the points you need to plan for in his site.

Yeah, I love those ads which say 'Can you retire on $1M'? You can retire on quite a bit less, the trick is to manage your resources. We realized our SSi check would not cover our $2K monthly mortgage payment but lucky us, we lived in a hot RE market. We remodeled & sold it for a killing. Paid off the mortgage with enough left over to buy an acre and a half in a quiet rural coastal town in the California redwoods. We paid cash & retired without debt. !

Absolutely love that bit about local stores and big stores having to sell at the same price. This is so great for local businesses. Any of us around 55 or more probably fondly remember our mothers sending us down to the local corner store for a loaf of bread or some milk. Most of those local mama & papa stores are now gone in our countries. Good onya Sri Lanka for thinking up a way to keep it going and thus keep local businesses and supply chains going. I'm an retired expat living well with a family of 3 in Naga, Philippines for about $850/month (basic expenses). It even includes visa and some med requirements. 3 bdrm, 2 bath townhouse, AC and mostly home cooked meals. I think perhaps many countries you can do the same (i.e., $400-$600) as long as you're not paying the expenses of a lot of other people, and/or a high maintenance partner. I try to wrap my head around why some single guys say they need at least $2K-$3K to barely survive. They talk about 'lifestyle,' but leave out what that 'lifestyle' is. Anyway, great video!

That's a fine Buddhist country. It's actually really a Buddhist country. May be the only one genuinely based on Buddha's philosophy. All other Buddhist countries are a combination of Buddhism and something else. The Mahayana Buddhism of South East Asia is only half Buddhist in its philosophy the other half is influenced by what ever the original religion of each country was. Sri Lanka is pure Buddhism though. No mystic magic stuff or Bodhisattvas or" fat laughing Buddha ". The real Buddha was a skinny guy from Nepal. Sri Lanka is pure genuine Buddhist.

I Live in Florida. I Receive just Under $1,400 a Month on Disability. Everything I own I OWN. Land, Truck, House/Camper, Motorcycle and a Few other things.. MAIN Bills are as Fallows. $35-80 a month Electric depending on season. $90 a month Internet and Landline Phone $100 Truck and Motorcycle Insurance $50-100 Gas for Truck and Motorcycle. Could just Round everything up and say it's $400, NOT Including Food that is a Combination of Eating In and Out. $500 is Put away a month or Will start to be because I just got done fixing the Bike for $5,000.. Leaving AROUND $500 for the Food and Odds and Ends and then Tags and Taxes at the Start of Each Year... If I need stuff, I eat In more. And eating only Once a Day helps, not including Snacks like Sunflower Seeds and Chips from time to time. Eating Out is between $15-$22 Depending on Day and/or where or use of Coupons at Subway to make that $15-22 Split between 2-3 Days.. And People say I can Not live in the Philippines or even Vietnam on My Budget. Only problem I see is, in Vietnam, You have to keep renewing your Visa every few months and in the Philips, I could Technically become a Citizen and Still receive my Disability Payments but Vietnam is a Way Better Country to live in. Cleaner and Nicer, more Honest People and not as many Power, Internet, Water, Sewage Problems. Could Not care about any kind of Fish, I am a Pork, Chicken or Beef Guy. I get Sick on Fish. I would need Dog Food for my Dog. I would NEED a US VA Clinic to receive my Medical and Would NEED to Trust the Mail Service to Receive my Medications...
