Wow! Neil Adams addressing the disparity between tachi-waza and ne-waza. This has always been a conscious effort to maintain the balance. Good on you to invite such a great and respected judoka to invite for an interview. I do think that the ijf needs to allow more time for ne-waza. the rules have really diluted the Japanese Jujitsu where this came from. However, i am realizing that because of all the cross training the arts are moving back to the beginning: Traditional Japanese Jujitsu.

Samir.....Maeda only studied Judo and Sumo not Jujutsu(Jujutsu is a umbrella term for 100s of styles) Judo was founded in 1880s had sporting matches since the 1890s.. And what do you mean by BJJ preservation of traditional Jujutsu? You do know "Traditional Japanese Jujutsu" does not have ground fighting right? Look up any traditional jujutsu systems in Japan and I can promise you you wont find ANY ground fighting, ground techniques were invented in the 1890s at Handa dojo by Tanabe Mataemon solely to counter Judo and was then absorbed into it. Class dismissed. Also Fusen ryu is a myth as the systems is still practised in Japan and has no newaza.

In fact BJJ came from newasa Judo. Mitsuyo Maeda, the Count Koma was a Judoka who tested his judo against everybody. But at that times, judo was known as Kano Jiu Jitsu, the Kano System of Jiu Jitsu, or just Jiu Jitsu and as Judo became a sport 70% focused on tachywasa, so the began the difference. The sport's rules. They are two different sports which have the same origin; Judo.

I dont train anymore sadly and its unlikely to change. I was lucky to train with him a few times a hes a strong fella. cross training is a term thrown around a bit loosely. in this instance i believe its not cross training, more like being better rehearsed, or increased knowledge of your marital art. you at times need to practice as if there is no ref, no rules etc for it to be more realistic. cross training would be more appropriate if it was a grappling based art and a striking based art practice together.

If judo didn't have only 10-20 seconds on the ground and if they didn't have stupid rules like banning closed guard and leg scissors and not pressuring the neck or leglocks then there wouldn't be BJJ today. That being said BJJ would benefit from judo throws as they've fallen out of favour in BJJ. I chose to do judo instead of BJJ but i'm into MMA unlike most judoka

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu - Basically Just Judo Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu looks just like Judo, because it is Basically Just Judo. When Mitsuyo Maeda, a.k.a. "Conde Koma", began teaching Carlos Gracie in Belem do Para, Brazil in 1917, he was teaching Jigoro Kano's Jiu-Jitsu direct from the Kodokan in Japan. The name "Judo" was not popularized until 1925. Mitsuyo Maeda was a Kodokan Judo instructor whose specialty was ground fighting (newaza). This type of ground-only fighting is often referred to as Kosen Judo, or High School Judo, because it was popularized in Japanese High Schools as a form of interscholastic wrestling. Kosen Judo rules allowed direct transition to newaza, enabling scenarios where one less skilled competitor could drag the other down to the ground (a tactic now known as "pulling-guard" in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu). There is absolutely no question that the Gracie family demonstrated great skill and marketing acumen by promoting "Gracie Jiu-Jitsu" or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to the masses. Helio Gracie's loss to Kodokan Judoka Masahiko Kimura was advertised as a "moral victory". More importantly, the Gracies sponsored the original Ultimate Fighting Championships when the world was begging for a professional combat sport with more depth than Boxing and more realism than the WWF. However, there is now a generation of Jiu-Jitsu students who only know half the story. Worse yet, they are often paying enormous prices for the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu name only to learn a subset of Jigoro Kano's original Jiu-Jitsu techniques and teaching methods. The Judo world has not been without fault too. High ranking judoka often looked down on the new popular MMA world due to Judo's Olympic status. As a result, most Judo schools have been over-emphasizing the throwing techniques within Judo due to pressure from the International Olympic Comittee to increase ratings on TV for the brief moments when Olympic Judo would receive air time. Similarly, there is a generation of Jiu-Jitsu students, and now instructors, who incorrectly think Judo is nothing but a standing sport. Fortunately, the phenomenal success of Ronda Rousey, 2008 Olympic Judo Bronze Medalist and UFC / MMA Champion has brought attention back to the accurate history of Judo and its rightful place in the Jiu-Jitsu grappling world.

BJJ has 0 standing part. You can be honest. We won't be mad. BJJ has recently moved closer to leg locks and no-gi submission only. It looks less and less like judo. BJJ can learn so much from judo, but it does not go the other way around. Too many submissions are not effective in judo because of the time constraint. Many BJJ are leaning towards wrestling as a base to improve. It's much more prevalent in the U.S. and accessible at a high level too. I have not really seen any judo schools or any friends who does judo. That may be part of the reason in the U.S. why BJJ doesn't have as much judo cross training. BJJ is like slower paced chess. Judo is explosive on the dot chess.
