Not only is fishing from a boat possible, it's preferable. You can get from (fish) spawn to spawn faster, and since you're not standing on shore, multiple mob types aren't going to bother you.

You can also jog the karve at the lowest speed and then cut the speed when you get a nibble and pull it in. I found you only need to cast your line out 5m this way and you can get the best fish.

Is there any reason for fishing the other fish other than the starting areas ones? So far I've only gotten to black forest so no higher than tuna and troll fish, but it seems it's only the quality that matters, a quality 1 yields 1 raw fish, 2 yields 4 fish regardless of fish type ,is that the case for all types of fish? If so, why bother going away from meadows and black forest?

Thank you so much for this! I love the fishing. I really appreciate any devcommands you show. I have a handicap that makes the game impossible without them. All your Valheim videos are very helpful and fun, even if I can’t do most of it. I laugh and enjoy all the places you do not achieve perfection, and the “fixes” you use to make it happen. I can see it’s not just me that messes up. Thanks for that ‘e’ trick on fishing, I was running up shore with the fish to land it LOL

I used to enjoy the fishing Profession quests in WoW, it developed into a whole deep lore plotline and includes seasonal fish per area and night and day catch rates. I'm looking forward to trying the update out when it launches.

Something it seemed like you missed was that high quality fish are actually bigger in appearance in the water giving you a clue where to cast for better chance to snag one.

Just wanted to let you know, there are 12 types of fish, you are missing the Tetra fish, you fish them inside Frost Caves with lakes which are incredibly rare. Edit: you can also catch Tuna and Pike with regular bait.

Is it the frozen cave lake? I tried fishing in it before the update or trying to break the ice but it did nothing... Or is there another lake with unfrozen water in the cave?

This is an amzing little vid Kysen. Very handy and informative, got me started pretty good cause I couldn't find out how and where to start. I do think it's a bit of a waste to use a Serpent head for bait. They are pretty rare as a drop and sink in the water. I don't know if it's a bug but more then half the fish in the plains (grouper) I loose and not cause my stamina is gone. Kinda weird and annoying. Keep up the great vids, amazing stuff.

The 4th fish is actually Tetra fish, found in a rare frost cave variant with a water pool, you need cold bait to catch it and it currently doesn't have any other recipes, other than fish meat, although there are a ton of them in the cave pool, I fished 65 from one cave

I’ve checked every single frost cave in five different worlds just looking for a cave with water in it. You’re so incredibly lucky to have one. If you aren’t opposed to console commands, would you mind typing the command “printseeds” while in the cave and posting the readout it gives?

NO freaking WAY! I've been to every frost cave in my world and havent seen a single water body in one. This was on a fresh seed too. There's clearly a bug with the procedural generation right now.

Fishing from boat u can still sail with the line cast and it will also auto hook when traveling at speed. Recommend the carve as it slower than the longboat

so mistlands is live now and one change you will notice immediately is that fish now jump out of the water, many end up on shore, so if you are starting a new world and dont have the $ or cant find the trainer you can pickup fish just by walking the shoreline

I managed to catch a puffer fish when it jumped out from waters of the Black Forest onto the shore. I have managed to collect quite a variety of fish by just waiting on the shore. I have found that it helps if there is a bit of a swell as it allows the fish to get a bit closer, and then stand on a rock outcropping to get a little further out, and where the water depth drops quickly. I am not sure if this helps or not but I go into sneak mode and wait -- I think the fish get scared and swim away if you are not sneaking.

FYI for new players: you do NOT have to hit E to catch the fish. If you have enough stamina you can just keep reeling it in and it will automatically catch the fish (displaying a notification of the type). He’s manually grabbing the fish because it uses a little less stamina and running out before you catch it will result in the fish getting away.

No it doesn’t automatically catch it because when I reel it all the way in I’ll get the notification like “caught perch” and the fall will fall and swim away if i don’t hit E

@@SideStrafed it's the same as walking over loose loot on the ground. It picks the fish up just like when you walk over wood or anything else. You just need to drag it out enough for it to die and become "loot"

@@SideStrafed Fishes drop when your inventory is full. Remember each new type and each different quality requires a new slot. It happened to me and I got super pissed off when I dropped one but then noticed I didn't have any of that quality yet and my inventory was full.

before the update, we had an island that had deep water immediately off shore. It was fantastic to catch tuna. Fish Tacos are fantastic food.

fish4_cave is a correct code to spawn fish4, since that fish (Tetra) only appear in the rarest frost cave that have a pool didn't get frozen.

I think the Fish4 thing is that cave fish which was added in the caves update but the AI didn't work well, so it was disabled. Hopefully, and given the cave baits, that is fixed now.

you forgot a fun fact... when you have multiple fish that are stacked, and you toss it back in the water, it converts back to 1 fish. Also it's a good way to power level your fishing skill to build/dig out a fishing hole deep enough so they can't jump out, and just load it up with a crap ton of fish.. catch- level- release back into the pond, rinse and repeat.

my question is: do all the fish turn into the same raw fish now and the recipes with fish are still the same? because then is there any point of making different bait and go to all the different biomes if the standard one for the meadows already give you everything you need?

All fish can be turned into raw fish, which is used in the food recipes. The new recipe "Fish N' Bread" does require the angler fish though and in the future perhaps there will be more uses for different types of fish beyond the decorational use.

I wasn't aware of fish grade until i got a grade 4 tuna landed on my harbor during a storm. Grade 4 Tuna is EXTREMELY HUGE. 1/3 of the long table HUGE.

Created a small pool on the Black Forest coast and added a #2 trollfish I had previously caught. I tried fishing that fish to raise my fishing skill, but it only took the mossy bait once through an entire day. Is there a secret to get them to bite? Does a fishing pool need to be minimum size? Not impressed with IG's new fishing update. It's not worth it standing around for a whole day to catch just one or two fish.

I think the missing 12th fish is the mythical "Tetra" fish that only spawns in underground lakes found deep inside the frost caves. The chances of finding these underground lakes are extremely rare, and few have ever held a tetra.

the devs told me on Discord that the cave fishing atm is 1/400 chance, which personally is ridiculous. I actually loaded an old world and fresh one on beta testing. spent 3 days searching only caves, well over 100 and not one lol... so little burnt out on looking for that fish.. however the fishing is definitely a cool mini game if not a full fledged game on its own..

I like to go and fish is ashlands and deep north but I'm afraid in future updates when they get released the biome will be empty again. This happend to me with mistlands update too and I don't like it at all.

Fish in bread is made from angler fish and bread dough only. Normal fish meat won't work

From my understanding, chicken eggs do not appear on the trader until after you've killed Yagluth. I'm at a point right now where, even though I'm in padded armor (by sheer luck I got a hold of a little flax ive been growing),just being in plains still kicks my butt more times than it doesn't. So actually killing Yagluth with potetial adds is going to take a lot more practice. That being said since I don't have barley yet, there are better health foods than basic cooked fish.

before, fish were pretty sparse so things like fish wraps were a lot of work to make, now fish are like 10x more plentiful making fish wraps extremely easy to make which is still one of the best health foods. imo fishing is even better now. Now my go to 60/40 health/stamina food is fish wraps, bread and cooked chicken. it's 175/155 and only costs two cooked fish, 8 flour and 1 chicken. All of those items do not require foraging or killing enemies making them very easy to farm.

I know this is a fish video but.... I did some experiments with chickens/hens and 2 star chickens/hens are coded in the game. They are spawnable via devcommands but I'm unsure if we can develop them naturally. Also unsure if this affects egg production. Something to look into. Fun fact the 2 star hens are physically smaller than the natural counterparts.

You know what i hate about the new fishing mechanic is that it seems a bit harder to get raw fish now because of the fishing mechanics and its kinda bad since fish wraps are kinda hard to make now and fish wraps are really good food in the game

If I had to guess, I'd say that while it's still possible to catch a certain fish with a different type of bait, it's just not as likely. For example I caught a few pike with regular bait from the trader, which then gave me the recipe for the bait made to catch them more frequently.

He literally has a spreadsheet showing where and how. You just go from biome to biome and work your way up to your target species. Did you watch the video? All you need to get started is money and a trader, then you start with basic bait and catch perch(Meadows) and get a troll trophy to unlock the next bait for the trollfish(Forest).

@Sven Galt Can't speak for the OP, but for me, I did watch the video, saw the spreadsheet. Misunderstood at the time and thought the spreadsheet was saying that in order to make the bait needed to catch a fish, you needed one of that fish. Rewatched it and realized that is offset by one. So, get regular bait, catch perch, make mossy bait, catch trollfish, and so on. Keep this in mind the next time you misunderstand something, and someone seems to think you are a moron because of it.

Different fish are used in different recipes. Anglerfish for example is used in Fish and Bread

I feel like some of these recipes are WAY too restrictive and need to be changed. Abomination trophies and serpent trophies are too inhibitive and ruin the progression.

Purpose is to get to misty bait to catch the anglerfish and make the new best stamina food (fish n bread 90 stamina)

@@minmaxtax uhh huh. so you catch a bunch of nothing fish to ultimately catch a good food fish. one thing i can say in my years of gaming is most players dont do fishing minigames, for precisely this reason. very little reward for the effort.

@usern4metak3ns One thing I can say in my years of living, is that generalizations rarely apply to nearly as many people as the people generalizing think they do. I like fishing in a lot of different games, including this one. RDR2 being my favorite system for it. Even if it isn't the most effecient use of my time, I find it fun, which is the point. If you don't then...do other things?

This is a waste of time. No matter what biome you go to the fish still give you the same amount of food depending on their quality. So why not just use the normal fishing bait and the bait for whatever biome you live in. There's no reason to go fish anywhere else they all give you the same amount

I mixed regular bait with the troll trophy to get the moss bait. Didn’t need a perch. I’m on Xbox. Maybe the updated since this.

i just see the whole 9 bait thing as unnecessary, wont this just overcomplicate an already boring mechanic? what is the advantages introduced by this update? the only one i see is that fish seem to be even more retarded and strand themselves even more than before on rocks so i dont have to fish so far it takes more space in the inventory, it now has more steps, its less accesible, it takes more gold, and i may spend 10m waiting for a fish only for the game to tell me "the fish doesent take the bait". coincidentally, this made the update 20 items bigger with very little effort as 9 are re-colours of bait and 12 are models of fish, ngl, i kinda hate this change as i already disliked fishing before, now its even more dedicated for no reason
