Nice! It's been bugging me in the back of my brain that there has to be an easy way to construct a fish weir, and this is it. Can't wait to try it. :)

I've done this in the mistlands. Well not with roofs but just using floors along the shore in this cove with angler/puffers. I'll also park my boat in the middle and they just jump in. I can also cast a line right next to the floor and hook fish with low fishing skill and still catch them with only 80 stamina.

btw, you don't have to use iron cage floors, just use wooden poles on the ocean/lake floor to improve structural integrity, doesn't matter if it doesn't snap with the floor, i just make it go trough the floor and it works just fine.

You can probably also just use the cage floors without the wood floor. The wiki claims they are solid (you can't shoot an arrow throw them).

100% - haven't made a fish trap like this but have done the long jetty type builds to hauling in serpents - just sad there isn't more to make from the scales :(

Ground level drops beyond reach at certain point so you eventually you will have to use iron. Might as well skip the poles in that case... but very true

doesn’t work anymore? my fish don’t jump for some reason. I made it 22 meters long, and I clearly see the fish just chilling under the construction 😒

ngl after building one of these near a ton of fishes, and watching them all swim away and dissapear from my spot, even after deleting all workbenches and buildings and waiting hours for them to respawn, it's much faster to just catch fish with a pole. I even placed 20 rafts in a line to get more area that fishes could get trapped, all in all i caught maybe 3 fish.

Great idea. I was using a less efficiently, but decent alternative, I found a fish spawn in a tiny inlet in Plains. I used my hoe to raise the ground to mostly keep them from getting out into the nearby ocean. I only had to raise the ground with stone in 3 tiles to make a dirt "boardwalk," that makes it hard for fish to get to the ocean without being beached. Each time I return after a while I get 3 to 4 fish that are flopping on the "dirt boardwalk," just just above the water. Even if they get over it into the ocean they swim back and get stuck again.

sick was trying to come up with a good fish trap going to have to set one up near where some angler fish spawn since they are more wanted then any other fish I mean by the time I needed fish to make the tacos I was able to make the next tier of cooking recipes so this will help with those angler fish :D I mean I had a small wooden box overflowing with fish meat until I wasn't lazy an brought all the black metal back to base to make the best boxes for storage since a nice way to get fish is mainly to flatten the ground just near the waters edge and every now and then the fish will jump onto land waiting for me to pick them up :P

build something similar in the mistlands at a spot with many many angler fishs. During the building process I catched 3 angler. After I finished the build the spawns disappeared. (now they are far outside) I get rid of all workbenches, set up my portal away, but still the spawn seem to be broken by my structure. I will test this design.

Game disables spawns when near buildings.....so not sure how it happens...musta be bug

Spawns are disabled in range of workbenches. I’m not sure about other structures tho

@@spousenhouses4460 Growths are unique; tar pits will spawn two growths every 12 hours or so regardless of how close you build, unless you thoroughly and completely drain the tar pit. Even filling in the tar with Earth and putting a workbench on top will not stop it.

did same thing but using poles im early on the iron, got a kinda marshy patch of land were they spawn and they get stuck on top of the rocks, build 2 of these along the coast not into the sea like in the video, now ist always filled with fish

Fish don't want to jump in, I tried 3 fish farms in 3 different places of Black Forest and I got 1 trollfish that somehow spawned somewhere there or whatever It doesn't work ;/

I use the hoe to raise a circular donut near the shore, then pickaxe a bowl in the center. Even better if you can just find a natural 'V' in the shoreline and just create a bottleneck.

But... doesn't the iron disintegrate from being in the water? I haven't seen it fully happen but I remember when I used Iron fence and it wasn't covered the rain would break it down over time...

Looks as though it works - per your video however, maybe a patch altered the process though I have three fish traps and I find more along the shore than I doin the traps...? Still working on this.Nice method that worked when you created.

you could also spam boats, and the fish will jump into the boats, longships work best

Nice! I always wished I could make fish n bread viable, but catching anglerfish with a pole is ridiculously hard, and I'm not willing to put in 400 hours just grinding up my dang fishing skill.

Just use a core wood pole, make it snap "under" and it'll reach sea floor and give you 100% stability

I just built one to there's been a change I think fish no longer jump very often close to shore. I just spent hours building rebuilding this thinking I was not in the right spot. Fish just swim under it . Sucks but I think we missed it . 😕

Yea maybe they changed fish behavior(patched it?) i tried this and fish swim under the floor/roof. tried it in my world in mistlands to see if i can catch a pufferfish this way for greydwarf farm

You can do the same just by raising the ground so that it makes the same shape and waves bring in the fish.

ive done days of testing the hard way regarding to making fish traps and to figure out spawns, it seems fishes do have several spawn points but there are 2 problems, 1: they patched how creatures / fish work, some time ago (cant remember exactly when, when you were out of rendering distance, fishes would disapear and eventually respawn once you are near water, now they changed it to: they spawn and stay there till you fish them, so this means that whenever you are close to the water first time and you get a bit more into the water the fishes spawn further away and they will stay there till you caught them. 2: creatures and fish spawn at a certain distance, so that means, closer you are to the water, further away fish spawn. the above make fish traps quite difficult to optimize

no. even iron cage floors (iron wood beams are the same stability but cost half the iron) have a limit of 16 horizontally without supporting pillars below them. then even they will break instantly. its impossible to make a bridge over a large ocean area in vanilla. 16 floor tiles is the absolute limit. then you need a pillar to hold the thing up. and you cannot build in the actual ocean biome as the water is over 26m deep. impossible to reach the ground without exploits/cheats to build up.

Has anyone had any luck doing this with Anglerfish in the Mistlands? Correct me if i'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure they don't really jump out of the water.

There is lazy version of that - drop a bunch of rafts (i have about 15 rafts in mistlands shore, Works the same way. - No need to follow the water level - always on the surface, not affected by the storm. - No need to have iron - just move the raft to the water as far as you want, and jump from one raft to another. - You fell of the raft - easy to climb up with the ladder (with wooden constructions it can be complicated. I've spent several hours experimenting with different constructions. And then came to this solution....

What is the respawn timer for fish in an area? Let's say you fish up everything in one spot how long for that spot to respawn?

Once the fish are gone, you have to leave the area for a few hours before they will respawn. (and do not leave a workbench or anything else that blocks spawns!) you wont have anymore fish. But they are easy to make so ive been just moving making more traps while I wait for the fish to respawn near the others.

@@TheImmrtal Of course they're gonna start spawning again if you remove the workbench. How would the trap work otherwise, if you couldn't even build it, since you need to place the workbench to build it? 😂

@@leyline_leila my man, what is meant is, if during the exact spawn time if you have a workbench there, not when you initially build the thing (doh) and yes, if you leave the workbench for too long when spawn triggers they don't spawn there anymore. you a bit slow

@@TheImmrtal You should learn how to word stuff properly so people do not misunderstand it before calling people slow. Removing a workbench, or any of the other spawn-preventing structures, will allow them to spawn again regardless of how long the bench has been there. There is no "time limit" on how long you can have the bench there before fish stop spawning forever.
