Valian Years were the system of measured years before the sun and moon in Middle-earth, and they are worth exploring to understand time and the aging of Elves in Arda, for time and deeds lie heavily upon the Eldar. Thank you all so much for watching, let me know your thoughts about Valian Years and the aging of Elves in the comments below! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! One of The most complex topic in Tolkien l’ore. Immortality is not living forever, it’s seeing everyone else die
@anatoldenevers237
@anatoldenevers237 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I feel like true immortality would be miserable, but being eternal and just being able to choose to die once I've decided I've lived long enough, that I could do.
@stevan.veljkovic
@stevan.veljkovic 2 жыл бұрын
that sentence literally makes no sense :D seeing everyone die IS a consequence of living forever which IS immortality.... sophism much? :D tell me then if u dislike life so much why do u go to the doctor when ur hurt? why do u eat? why do u do everything possible to extend your life? just let urself die before anyone else... also do u really think u need to be immortal to see everyone else around you die? have u hear of wars? of plagues? of plain old bad luck? my grandmother saw her parents die, her husband die, her child die, her family die, her friends die.... she wasnt immortal, she also wasnt special, there are people that saw much much more death than that, she was just an average person living ironically shorter than average life.... such a simple and childish view of the world.... insert "im 14 and this is deep" meme here... i often find that people proclaiming these thought about immortality are the ones most afraid of their own mortality and probably would do anything to be the first in line to get "the ring"

I've been a Tolkien lay scholar since I first read LOTR when I was eleven in 1977. When the movies came out, I tried to explain to my wife just how astonishingly old the High Elves were. Thank you for helping put it into an easy perspective. Excellent work. Aside: at my DayJob about a year ago, I pulled up an Ancestry geneology (sic) which showed my family tree from the mid-16th Century. The so-called educated pharmacists around me muttered that they kinda, sorta knew one of their grandparents. Being cut off from our past, from our family, is a horrific tragedy of the modern age.

“A hundred years is a mere blink in the life of an elf. I’m patient; I can wait” Man and I get cranky when daylight savings time comes around haha But very interesting subject! We as readers forget that the world existed before the sun and the moon which is crazy to even comprehend. And then it’s even more insane when the eventual end of Arda will come about and time will end😵 Ok I think my simple mind needs a break now haha
@scientia.veritas
@scientia.veritas 4 жыл бұрын
The statement, while profound, is also highly exaggerated. Cirdan lived 10,900 years. If 100 years is a blink, then Cirdan blinked only 109 times. An average human blinks once every 10 seconds. To blink 109 times, he would need 18 minutes. For a human with lifespan of 80 years, that's just 0.015% of his life.

It’s like when arda was young time passed slowly like when we were kids. A day looked like a whole week before it was over. When arda was old the years passed very quickly like it is with older people. A week seems like a day, a year passes so quickly that it’s gone before you know it.

He gets a stay on that but the awakening of dwarves is still delayed. Then his Maia Sauron gets corrupted by his old buddy Morgoth. Later on he sends another of his Maias, Saruman to fix things and he gets turned by Sauron. And all this without counting the flack he caught from his wife about dwarves cutting down her trees or from the other Valar for teaching Faenor to the point where he had the ability to craft the Silmarils that kicked off the war. Poor guy just can't catch a break.

Nice video yoystan. Also I’d like to “add” what you said about how it was hard for the elves to understand changing things since they were immortal. I think after hearing that it shows that death really is a gift because to live in a world that changes yet you do not can be a curse and I think that’s what iluvitar wanted his second born children to understand. I hope you like this and maybe you’ll use it if you ever make a video about further explain iluvitars gift of men.

I never knew that the years of the lamps actually lasted longer then the years of the trees. I always thought the lamps and the Valar's first home on the isle of Almaren only lasted a brief time. All told these Valian years along with the three ages of the sun and the ages afterwards all the way up to this present age are tens of tens of tens of thousands of years long. Wow good Lord that is really hard to comprehend. Tolkien's world is massively, hugely much much older than C.S. Lewis' mere 2555 years of Narnia's existence.

Think about it as 'the older the Age, the longer the Age'. This is true for our History, too. For example, the Paleolithic Age lasted from 50000 BC to 8000 BC. That's more than 4 times as long as the rest of the Ages put together.

I remember when I first researched about ages and years. When I realised how old Galadriel was, she felt even more powerful when I remembered the movies. So, if I understand correctly, elves age based on what happens to them, otherwise they don´t? The idea of immortality, and particularly if you stop aging at a young age, was always appealing, but being that in a world constantly at war and where your friends and family die a lot, that doesn´t seem fun. I always looked at the perspective of being able to see everything. Like Cirdan, for example. He was born early enough that he met the very first elves that existed. I find that fascinating.

It's weird to hear that the Time of the Lamps was the longest, since it had so little focus in The Silmarillion and felt like Melkor broke them really quickly. So the fact it lasted that long surprised me. Though given how much I hate the concept of permanent daylight, it still wasn't fast enough for me. I also knew about the hour system based on the trees but didn't realize they were so much longer. I should mention that I'm currently reading The Silmarillion but am only midway through the tree years, and it's kind of slow going due to the sheer loudness of where I live. So I'm not sure if it mentions the sun and moon being faster yet or if that was just a History Of Middle Earth thing. Sealing Melkor for 300 years after all he did seemed pretty fair, though 3,000 is a little harsher. I have serious problems with Eru as a deity/parent/administrator, but Melkor still took things a bit too far. Though I still like that they gave him a chance to repent and rejoin them. I feel like most fictional deities wouldn't do that, so little pet the dog moments are always nice.

As awesome as always. I've got to say that your channel reinvigorated my love for Tolkien's legendarium. I've got to say that this video is quite interesting because although it involves a lot of math, it can theoretically answer a question that has been bugging me for quite a while. In our timeline, using the equation of Valian year and our years, when would the stories of Tolkien would have taken place in our timeline? And if it can be measured, in which ages would we be, now? Also, I know it's quite off topics, but I've also been meaning to ask you about your tought about such alternative account of Middle Earth's history as the book "The last ringbearer" by Kiril Eskov. I know they're not taken into account as part of the legendarium but it's quite interesting to think of stories where sauron's forces would have actually been the good guys and stuff.

Thank you for the support, my friend! That is a curious question, and one scholars have tried to answer for some time! It seems every age ends with a large war, so taking that into account, with the World Wars and others, I’ve seen people place us in the Sixth or Seventh age if I remember correctly. As for that book you mentioned, I still need to check it out! It would be interesting to see the events of the War of the Ring from that perspective.

Love your videos. I often put them on in the background so i can listen whilst making dinner or even working out 😅 I'd like to see you cover a video of Gildor Inglorian. There doesn't seem to be many discussions about him. Also what's the best way to contact you? I'd love to show you my middle earth collection and discuss my plans for a complete middle earth in miniature and collection form. Still a work in progress but I figured I'd start putting it out there into the community :)

Please expand on this topic in terms of the different calendars, days, and weeks throughout arda also could you maybe elaborate on astronomy and astrological aspects of arda as well I feel like that’s a very unexplored area of the lore, at least if it is I can’t find anyone talking about it..

I think men represent how we age phisically, the decay of the flesh, and the elfs represent how we age mentally and spiritually, our experiences being what really change us. Very interesting video

I've always wondered about when an Elf reached his or her third cycle of life, when they started visibly greying, and for a male to grow a greying beard like Cirdan, was that because they resided in mortal Middle Earth and these lands had an effect on their aging? Or did they go through the same process of aging in Valinor as well. I mean did the Vanyar, Noldor and Teleri who resided on Aman and her isles stay relatively young even deep into a third cycle of an elven life?
@MenoftheWest
@MenoftheWest 4 жыл бұрын
That’s a great question! I think the Elves who stayed in Valinor aged also, for though the land was undying, some who came there, such as Bilbo, Frodo, Sam and Gimli, still aged. However, I would imagine that they aged less quickly than those who dwelt for ages in Middle-earth, as they were not subjected to the same tools as those in the East.

@@MenoftheWest Ah okay, so they age still but much slower and they endure till Arda ends, at least until Eru commences third Third Song. Okay I thought so but wasn't quite sure on that thanks. Speaking of Frodo, Bilbo Sam and Gimli in Valinor or more specifically on Tol Eressea, I wonder how many years the Valar granted them to dwell there in peace before they died.

@@MenoftheWest Bilbo, Frodo Sam and others aged because they are mortal and tolkien had said had if they stayed in the actual undying land they would even more aged faster. It's just too perfect basically though Tolkien had make more eloborate explanation for that. I think it is from one of his letter. the elves and Valar would experience aging, so much so they will eventually envy the gift of men.

@@adrianciobanu5856 He did eventually, after his wife Rosie died. He took the trip with the last of the elves from the Grey Havens and resided in Valinor until his death. Finally, Legolas took a boat himself and sailed away to Aman, taking Gimli with him (how the Valar Manwe reacted to that, we do not know).

@MenoftheWest Now that you've covered time and immortality, another aspect of elves I'm curious about is their ability, or lack there of, to heal. I know not everything in the movies were canon, however, in the second Hobbit movie (I think), we see Thranduil lose his temper and his flawless face reveals garish scars?

What intrigues me a lot is the concept of time. Time is not a mere instrument such as a clockwork. Nor is it a line that connects two points with another. Or a stream that flows from one point to the next. Time is the impermanence of all things both living and growing. Therefore we are the time because we are the ones who are passing by. And Elfs and Man are doing this each at their own pace. Although Elfs tend to do it much more slowly. What's making it even more interesting is the fact that this seems to imply that both Elfs and Man are living in there own universe in which they experience a totally different perception of time. The first slow and the latter much faster. It's pretty interesting if one thinks about it.

I think as for an explanation for the discrepancies in time - how sure are we that time with the lamps was the same as time with the trees? Also, how long did it take for Yavanna and Nienna to grow the trees and later to turn the flower of Telperion into the moon and the fruit of Laurelin into the sun?
