Riding Phoenix Valley Metro Rail (train model: Kinki Sharyo Low Floor Light Rail) from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport PHX to Downtown Phoenix. The journey begins at PHX Airport Terminal 4 Luggage Claim. After picking up my luggage, I've headed to Valley Metro Rail Station (44th Street / Washington Station). The Valley Metro Rail does not stop inside the airport, but outside. In order to reach to the train, I had to take the airport PHX Sky Train (train model: Alstom Innovia APM 200) to 44th Street / Washington Station.
At 44th Street / Washington Station, I've purchased the ticket and boarded the Westbound train to Downtown Phoenix. The ride between from PHX Airport to Downtown is around 15 minutes. If you are going to Tempe, Mesa, or Arizona State University (ASU), take the Eastbound train.
As of 2022, one way fare is $2.00 and Day Pass is $4.00. Also, Valley Metro Rail only has one line at this moment. The train arrives every 15-20 minutes.

OPINION 💬:
This one rail line connects to several major destinations in Phoenix, such as PHX Airport, ASU, or Downtown. I’m glad to see that more people in the Phoenix are utilizing Valley Metro Rail. In the future, the Purple Line will split into two lines, Red and Green Line. Valley Metro is also expanding more rail line to the Phoenix area. For more information about Valley Metro Rail Light Rail expansion, check out this KZfaq video: • Phoenix's Light Rail N...
I’m not a huge fan of train interfering with vehicular traffic (unless if its a streetcar) but the train ride was smooth and fast. Also, traffic seems to go smooth around the rail line.
The interior of the train is clean. Most of the time, there are security personals and fare inspectors onboard the train.

It's weird how the skytrain has so much more passenger capacity than the light rail. You can see it in comparing station sizes too

I take those trains often in San Jose. I’ll be staying in Phoenix in a couple of weeks near the 44th street/Washington stop. I’m trying to avoid renting a car. But it’s so hot out there I may have to

The Signal priority seemed to work surprisingly well, did it feel like real rapid transit while riding?
@HOUExplorer
@HOUExplorer Жыл бұрын
Yes and I agree! I was surprise how fast the train was on the street level (felt like this train was on a elevated tracks). The train rarely stops, just keeps going til the next station. I’m not a huge fan street level trains, but this train makes an exception.

You didn't have to show the fare card to anyone or scan it? How do they know if everyone paid?
@HOUExplorer
@HOUExplorer Жыл бұрын
A few times (mostly during the day), I've encountered several Fare Inspectors. They carry a card scanner. You give them your fare card and they will swipe your card and check if it is valid.

Who's crazy idea was that nonsense monorail? Very poor planning. It's a long walk trying to carry heavy luggage through long hallways and on escalators just to get to the monorail. You'd think they would at least have had moving walkways there. A luggage cart would do no good, with the escalators. What does a person in a wheelchair do? Then when you finally get off the monorail at 44th Street/Washington, there is another walk, but part of it has moving walkways. Then after buying a Valley Metro ticket, there are yet more escalators to deal with. By then, passengers would be worn out and exhausted !! It would be less stressful and faster to take a cab or shuttle van service 'to/from' the airport. Instead of the monorail, the Valley Metro light rail tracks should have been on that right-of-way, with direct service to the air terminals. In Philadelphia, for example, the transit system's electric trains go directly from Downtown Philly to the International Airport and there are stops in each air terminal. Little walking necessary and no monorail needed.

You see that’s part of the problem. The light rail would be too far from downtown if it followed the airport corridor because the airport is literally just southeast of downtown, so going westward the rail would be too far south and the way to head up north would not give good ridership. To remedy this definitely a north-south spur line could work, but at that point it’s better to finally add proper grade separated metro. I actually have a fantasy map with that in mind. If you want I can send you a link of it
