Gran Canaria such a special place to ride your bike. Some 10/10 climbs on that island. I done the VOT with a 34/30. I literally pulled over at least 3 times from memory and cried. The mixture of feeling so remote, breathtaking beauty but more importantly the suffering. I've on done it once and have zero desire to repeat. This was before funky gravel gears though so a 30/33..... hmmm might have to go again.

I did the VOTT in mid-summer, mid-day and almost passed out from dehydration and exhaustion combined. My Garmin registered +50C at the Valley top. I made a silly mistake not to top up water in Nicolas and by the time I hauled myself to El Carrizal where I found a spring/well water tap with sign ‚Aqua no potable’ I was desperate enough to down a few bidons (choosing potential stomach problems over outright death), but water turned out good and saved my life. Did I mention I was 90kg at that time, on a heavy loaner bike, undergeared. Few years later, I am still looking for an answer WHY I did that and you tend to have those thoughts that it simply cannot be that hard as I remember it. Well, it definitely is. And I want to make it clear, no climb profile does the VOTT a justice, even slicing it to 100m stretches, the gradients on these roads are super inconsistent - there’s NO mid-grades anywhere: either 18% an then a micro downhill within 100 meter stretch is a norm. Thank you for reliving my memories, Mike! I love this video that little bit more than others because of my personal attachment, but they are all massively inspiring!

For the setup I went for my gravel bike so I had a wider 40mm tyre on, giving a much more comfortable ride over the poor road surface. Also less chance of puncturing. Although it’s not technically off road the condition of this section of road is pretty bad so I felt the gravel bike with its wider tyres compared to the road bike, along with easier gearing made sense. March of 2923, right? What took you so long to release this video?

I filmed last March but thought it more appropriate to release in the middle of winter so riders can get the most from it this season. Hope it helps all that attempt the infamous VOTT! 🤞🏼

Great filming but imo a miserable looking wasteland. The classic Euro mtns offer so much in scenery. This looks like something from Dune or Star Wars

Totally. That’s part of the VOTT, the landscape breaks you down little by little. It was actually still quite green believe it or not. It can be way more dry and desolate. In comparison the Euro mountains are so much lusher and even so they are very hard, they are somewhat more welcoming. 👍🏼

exactly what I thought. it's much easier to motivate yourself and keep fighting if there is a nice pass coming or you have beautiful scenery with animals etc. but this scenery would kill my motivation real quick :D

Funny how we can be so different. The rugged, stripped back landscapes of Gran Canaria are sublime and majestic to my eyes but then i adore desert landscapes. It beats the overdeveloped, tame dreariness of much of the UK. I always hanker for abroad but then i've had 50 years of the UK.
