There were many fantastic 2/5 and 1/5 Marines, a small 1st ARVN garrison, and a small First Cavalry unit of 400 near the Western gate side of the Citidel that all fought with odds of 20 to 30 to one during the battle. None had training in urban warfare, but we learnt quickly. Also over 2,800 ordinary Vietnamese school teachers, government workers, and other ordinary people were executed by the North Vietnamese during the battle, and buried in a mass grave which we found afterwards. The Communist North Vietnamese soldiers did not get the free South Vietnamese people to join them against their own country, and these innocents paid the ultimate price. I remember these heroes every day. A Military Intelligence Vietnam Veteran I Corp. Phu Bai/Hue 1967-1969,

Ahhh.....I wasn't at Hue...further south. However, I believe the Army was sent to reinforce the Marines....who were vastly outnumbered. Marines sent in thinking there was an NVA force they could handle(using a couple of companies); however, the lead units going in pretty much lost everyone. Like I said, I wasn't there, I was further south; I believe it was the 5th Marines that went in to retake the city. As noted, Marines at this time weren't trained for 'urban' combat. Jungle warfare, guerrilla warfare was what we trained for. These Marines took this city back almost inch by inch, yard by yard. Very, very slow forward movement. Also, many of these Marines engaged in hand to hand combat .These men deserve much respect. Some of the "GREATEST" of all time. Semper Fi ...... To jonness8927.....were you in Vietnam ?

That damn 6x6 ran over that marine who was taking cover behind it ! And they had been putting our dead on top of the 6x6 after losing 2 tanks, we had a small squad of about 8 guys making a push for the northeast corner of the compound and just as they rounded the corner they were hit with 3 rpg rockets fired at the same time 4 we're killed one badly wounded with 1 leg and both arms blown off and the 1 that could walk made it just behind the armored personal transport and collapsed and died from being burned, he had carried his own insides back with him in his hands

No way could we have won that war. The viet kong and Vietnamese army were too entrenched with tunnels and in the jungle bush hidden . They hit then scoot . While our lz's were out in the open and easily targeted . We would have to fight the war on their terms not ours. And if we did use their tactics it might have lasted decades or even centuries . We had to pull out .

US Marines inside Hue during TET....... What most people don't know is that the 1st Cav and (some units of the 101st) were involved in Brutal combat in the areas around Hue during TET (west and north of the city). Some of the toughest fighting (including the Ia Drang) by the 1st Cav during the Vietnam war occurred during the 1968 TET offensive around Hue! This brutal combat involving the 1st Cav went on for many months after Hue city was secured by the Marines. The 1st Cav was "tasked" with stopping the flow of replacements and supplies into Hue city during the offensive and also the destruction of the NVA units trying to flee Hue after the offensive and also the "mopping-up" of 10,000's of NVA troops in the Hue area after the TET offensive. The Headquarters of the NVA was NOT situated within the city of Hue during the TET offensive but within a complex of villages to the Northwest of Hue city during the fighting. The 1st Cav attacked this NVA command center (while the Marines were fighting within Hue city) and destroyed it during many days of extremely bitter fighting.

The 1st Cav fought in IaDrang in 1965. You have your dates wrong. The Ia Drang valley is in the central Highlands, far to the south. Hue was in I Corps TAOR was the Marines responsibility. 1st Cav was far south. I know, I was there.

Westmoreland was the WRONG man to be in Vietnam, commanding American forces. Giap was the RIGHT man to be in Vietnam commanding North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces. Marines and ARV forces possessed not a single item of bullet-proof equipment, unlike today. Despite lacking urban warfare training, the Marines and the ARV forces did the best they could; however, at what a horrific cost. Makes almost no sense to equivocate over our losses compared to the NVA and VC.....Giap was in the war for the 'long game' and we were not. Certainly, political forces adversely influenced America's Vietnam experience.......Giap and Ho knew it, and played us.
