From the 1994 event on the Learning and Legacy of W. Edwards Deming hosted by Clare Crawford-Mason and Lloyd Dobyns, this is a discussion of the challenge of implementing the Deming philosophy. Taped comments come from Nida Backaitis, Joyce Orsini, Barbara Lawton, Michelle Hunt, and William Latzko. Then Russ Ackoff, Ron Moen, and Linda Doherty discuss the challenge live.

System of Profound Knowledge: changing our understanding of the world will change our rules for "success". This 15 minute segment defines the system of profound knowledge at minute 3. It heats up at minute 9 - 15. Anyone interested in change in an organization must listen to this jewel of a conversation. Chief Justice John Roberts could learn from the definition of a "corporation" by these leaders of Deming philosophy coupled with systems thinking.

A great video and two gems from Ackoff. First, non-adaptive organizations...desperately optimizing broken or dysfunctional models and second, around minute 13 of the video, Ackoff talking about academia.

Sorry. I do not know about the entire event. But search on "Russ Ackoff TED Talk" to find the 12 minute talk he gave at this event.

@@SteveBrant55 thanks for your reply. Well, i got all of Russ books and have watched (as far as I'm aware of) all available videos. However there are a few, where something is missing like when Russ ane Deming sit together. Anyway thanks for your reply.

13.16. Universities, Corporations, Hospitals. Value in ACTION not PROOMATION. The other two speakers do NOT understand Profound Knowledge or Continual Quality Improvement. It takes a LOT of wisdom to truly implement Deming's philosophy.

Thanks for your comment. "understanding the world we live in... the rules for success... have changed. Defining the values everyone uses (organizational norms)" These are accurate statements. As for the people who were there live, I think it takes time for everyone to fully get where Drs. Deming and Ackoff were in their understanding of how much society is continuing to do "the wrong things". I think knowing we will never be as wise as Deming and Ackoff were is a useful way to constrain our egos... and to remain life-long learners.
