I try to put being a father first. My daughter will have to come on calls with me sometimes after school. She doesn’t want to. But tell her if we don’t work we won’t have any money to pay the bills then no money to play. Have to work before play. But I feel all the other stuff will go to my kid when I’m gone and it’s my job to make her the best person I can and prepare her for the world. Then to do the same some day when she has kids.

I'm a female in the tech industry, and I messed up with work at my last job because I was scared to make decisions. I've always taken instructions from men, and it was difficult to switch roles. I was confronted with a similar situation at my current job, and this time, I made the decisions and executed them, but I had help. All I can say is that being a leader is stressful, and I have more compassion for men when they take up that mantle and execute it. No wonder men die so much earlier than women. Stressful

Yeah…I’ve been in that position a long time in the energy industry. I’m 50 now, solid white beard and hair, good shape though. Stress level is always high….I probably have 10 years left TBH.

I think the issue is responsibility vs independence. I lead a bunch tech savvy women and they are very independent but rarely want to be responsible for their work. Need to be both.

I ask lots of questions at work, it is the only way to get the information I need to make an informed decision. What surprises me is how defensive people get and I have to stop them and say, "relax, its just a quetion. Don't take things personally this is just business." and then they let out a big sigh of relief.

Everything he said here is spot on. I work for a large, possibly the largest privately owned business in America and it's falling apart quickly. The reason for that is that there is not one person in a leadership role that is prepared or qualified to lead.

I think the fear of failing and have it on your shoulders is a very common denominator that holds many, including myself, back from pursuing certain roles. If you are a hard worker and hold the quality of your work at a high level then you have responsibility as a key trait. The reality is you've already made a ton of decisions in your worklife that have had significant impacts on the customers your serve and you likely wouldn't be where you are unless those contributions were highly positive amongst those your serve. Great advice by Patrick and I appreciate you taking the time to go through these signs so I can focus some time on identifying which are present with me and overcoming them.

I'm glad to hear all this. My impression of myself is I was afraid. Guess I am no longer afraid. I speak my mind now, only after analyzing all the data before I make decisions about how to handle situations and therefore when conflict arises, I stand my ground and own my decisions because I've already thought things through before I took the initial action. I try to teach my kids the same. Gather data, focus on the results youre trying to achieve, weigh your options, then take action, stay true to your principles, and not everyone is going to be your friend. I was well into my mid 30s until I fgured out all of this. So I'm hoping to save my kids some growing pains.

I think that the qualities you established. The breakdown of it. It’s a balance of analytics an emotions. Separate the two an continue with one, you’ll die in the swamp. Pair the two together, step back look at the variables of every situation. Execute both analytically an with understanding of the emotion. As a leader emotion will always be the driving factor. Bottom line is analytical.

Thats so ironic, I just got home from work last night and im watching valuetainment for the past hour or so... and the title relates so perfectly to my job. My supervisor, great friend to everyone and hard worker... well last night he was all stressed out because of his bosses. So he was on everyones ass tonight understandably!, anyway he got in a fight with a guy at work and is fired now... So I guess the pressure got to his head.

I've never been afraid to do the hard work and have the hard conversations. I've been able to make a real difference in every organization I've been a part of. But I come from the old skool where the hard talk didn't take into consideration the feelings of the subject. These days, my fear is that if and when I do what I must to lead, the subject will take it personally or twist it to get out of accountability and I'll be hauled before HR for being harsh, and I end up on the short end of the stick. For this reason, I've avoided leadership positions for the last decade and don't want the hell it brings for not enough compensation.

Patrick, your messages are great and your production value is as well. One small constructive criticism that I think (as a creative professional) would help…tone down the music track. The volume interferes with your points not only from a level’s perspective but it’s distracting. It can still be there but should almost indiscernible.

Because a lot of times I was put in the leading position but I helped other people realize they could be leaders just by the way I handled those people.
