In this video, I show how to adjust the valves on a Perkins 4-108 marine diesel engine.
Tools Needed:
Feeler gauge thickness .012 inch
Straight screw driver
5/8 inch wrench
Overlap Definition:
When the exhaust valve closes and the intake valve starts to open on the same cylinder.

I'm curious how it's worked out as I am contemplating some work in the boat too. Seems like a hard reach to get to my starter...

@@mattjewett4473 my starter was a bear to get to. The surveyor told me I’d likely have to pull the engine to get it out. I removed the coolant tank and the tubes that carry coolant and raw water. I also removed the exhaust manifold. Then I could access the starter. After removing the three bolts that hold it in place, I used a coat hanger and put the hook through one of the bolt holes and twisted it. With the loop end of the hanger, I put it around the body of the starter and lifted it out.

The valve clearance should be .012 for both intake and exhaust valves. Use a .012 feeler gauge for this process.

Ive got a '78 cheoy lee with this engine. It was flooded up to 1" below the dip stick tube. I'm wondering if about all i need to do is replace alternator and starter. Is there a way to scope my cylinders without removing the head or valve cover?

Your alternator is the least of your worry and may be fine. For starters you need to drain all of the oil and replace it including the filter. I would pull all of the projectors out and pump out all of the water that are in the cylinders. I would pull the valve cover off and see how bad it looks. If you have a lot of rust and or it has been sitting for a while, you might need to replace the engine. I’m not there to tell you, unfortunately, but if you have a lot of rest, it is a no go.

Look same as my 4.107. I thought all the 108s didn't have that style header tank

If you do some serious digging, you will find there are several versions of cooling systems for both.

Do you know how much torque on the locking nuts after adjustment?

I do not have the torque specs. I’m sorry for that. I have a torque wrench but I just have never used it for valve adjustments. Sorry for that.

god! NOBODY will just give the clearances and we see adds and have to meet your dog to learn what the valve clearance should be on a 4.108. Sorry, three searches later and hearing all the debates about nothing, and still I cant locate the needed info which is a decimal and two digits. I did this 20 years ago and want to double check the setting now restoring the old engine. I downloaded a manual but cant find the file and it seems to be gone.
