The rule of 9 is sequence is for British built 4 cylinder push rod engines with a firing order of 1-3-4-2 build in the 1960-70 for valve adjustment. It's is really it is really important to know this before carrying out any adjustment using the Rule of 9. If unsure then refer to the manufactures workshop manual
Before I decided to strip this engine, it occurred to me that I could pass on some useful information on a mechanics life hack. Sometimes on engines we only know the feeler gauge gap for the tappet adjustment, but what if we need to adjust the tappets and we don't know the sequence on how to do it because of lack of information. Well the rule of 9 is a handy mechanics life hack to learn

Awesome video, Steve. I’m 64 years old and been around cars all my life and never heard about the rule of nine. Just used it on my 1991 Nissan Figaro. Your video made it a lot easier. Thanks

My first car (a 1963 mini bought as a high mileage wreck in the mid 1970's) went through several scrap yard engines and gearboxes before I found one that was decent. Valve adjustment was a well practiced art at the end and the rule of 9 was a key component as manuals of the day advised. Nowadays there is KZfaq - more skill and knowledge than my brain can absorb - instantly on tap :).

Cheers Sean, funnily enough before making the video I was thinking about that, and thought yeah the rule of 13 works on a inline 6 as the crank goes up and down in pairs so 1 and 6, 2 and 5, 3 and 4. But keeping with the 4 cylinders just makes it easier to explain. Cheers for the comment though, hopefully it’ll help somebody with a 6 cylinder. Hope your keeping well, cheers Steve

It's a fantastic method Steve and I also use a dial test indicator on a mag base for finding the absolute valve down position, just gives that little bit of more accuracy on my Landrover series 2 petrol engine.

Cheers Steve, I just think that although it’s a little slower doing it this way over the way you do it to the manual in pairs, it’s much like you say more accurate, and much easier to remember method. And I like that, using a DTI gauge, now that’s accuracy 👍🏻

Just done this on my Mini. Great information thank you! Would it matter if the valves were adjusted hot or cold? Thanks.
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 3 жыл бұрын
Cheers mate, You need to adjust valves when the engine is cold. The reasons for this is that metal expands when it get hot. The clearances given will allow for this expansion. If you adjust when the engine is hot, the engine will sound tappy and run awful. Therefore always adjust when the engine is cold 👍
@MyBrilliantChannel
@MyBrilliantChannel 3 жыл бұрын
@@SteveDentonClassics That makes perfect sense to me. However I adjusted mine when it was warm (in my error) and reading into the A series engine that my Mini has you can actually adjust them warm however you take into consideration the gap you are setting them at. So 0.011" instead of 0.012" However i may have to revisit if she sounds tappy when it's cold! As I set them to manufacturers specs. Thanks again.

Thanks for the clear explaination. I've used this but a theoretical question if I may. Do you have to start with one or could you start anywhere providing you still follow the rule of 9? A follow up have you ever used the Gunson ClickAdjust tappet adjuster? I claims to replace feeler guage, spanner and screwdriver with one tool but even watching there video I can't really see how it works.
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 2 жыл бұрын
In theory you can start anywhere using the rule of 9, as it's only using simple maths to add up which one you are checking to which one you are adjusting. It's just easier and less thinking time to start with number one and work your way along the valves 👍

The gunson tool is simple you put the tool on and turn the handle round to slacken the lock nut, you then twist the plastic bit all the way in untill their is zero clearance and then let's say your clearance is meant to be 0.012", each click equals 0.001" so you wind the plastic knob back 12 clicks giving you 0.012" inch clearance, turn the silver lever back locking the nut off

Do we first have to set pulley mark for 1 tappet or just go with it
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 3 жыл бұрын
Really you should just go with it. Lining the pulley mark up for number one will see the valves on an overlap, it will only be a few degrees, but won't be as accurate adjustment. It's more accurate to feel valve 12 fully compressed and adjust valve 1, then go from there 👍

I know this might sound a bit daft,but will this work on a Diesel engine.I’m also thinking that the injectors would need to be unbolted?The engine is a 60hp Ford son.Thanks Dave
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 3 жыл бұрын
If the firing order is 1-3-4-2, and it's a 4 cylinder push rod engine, then yes it will work. If in any doubt though, refer the the manufacturers manual for the engine you are working on 👍

It's application is for 1-3-4-2 firing order for most push rod engines. Of course some Fords are 1-2-4-3 so in that case your better off following the manual 👍
