I love how many genres these novels mashup. Grimdark, science fiction, gothic horror, spaghetti western, pulp fiction, detective mystery, sword and sorcery, etc. The world building is insanely creative and the action scenes are delightful. I like all the weird descriptions of the lore, scenery and battle sequences. These books make me feel like I'm on heavy drugs lol.

I love the context at the start. I’m glad you mentioned the perverted minds aspect, as now I know that going in, I can be prepared for it. Definitely will pick this up.

I saw this comment got deleted for whatever ridiculous reason 🙄 Hopefully this gets back to you... The dudes on the Frontier are certainly sketchy and perverted. But if you can get passed that, there's a crazy world to explore

I remember watching Demon City when I was in high school. I didn't realize Vampire Hunter was an actual book! 😅 Shows how much I know! Haha. I'm going to have to check it out.

You sold me on it man, I was just about to purchase book 1 and 2 but thought that I should probably check out a review or 2 first and then found you so thanks man, I'm persuaded and have bought them now so yea, cool, I can't wait till they get here. P.s, I like berserk as well and also skate too so the anti hero hat was a neat little sign that I've come to the right place : )

Thanks for the review and giving us your opinions. I think, as someone who's read the first 10 novels, problems start to appear in unfortunate ways in terms of continuity, plot cohesiveness, and ridiculousness. What I mean by that is in a lot of these books there's a build up to a fight between D and an antagonist only for the fight to end in a quick kill. That really takes the air out of the room and ends up being ridiculous and disappointing in my opinion. As far as plot cohesiveness goes, Hideyuki is constantly introducing new elements to this world: plants, monsters, abstractions, etc. The problem with this is it's an overload of information and none of the earlier creatures or other-worldy elements are developed or expounded upon. This just makes the reader feel as if he's either not trying to maintain some sort of linearity to D's world or just writes things on the spot. Don't get me wrong: the books are a great experience and the first one especially so. However when you start to read the 5th, 6, and 9th novels you get a feeling that there's not as much of an overall plot build up or character development that's needed to keep the reader engaged.

I am glad you are enjoying. I am on book 9, being buying since they were released and some are quite hard to find. I believe the translation gets better with each book. But I think as you, that this book should be re-translated because this one is probably one of the worst. I would like to add something, three is another series that I believe you could enjoy - not dark and dastardly sorry - it's the legend of galatic heroes by Yoshiki Tanaka. 10 books on epic space opera. To me, the best anime, ever made and the books are pretty good. And I agree with you, sometimes the masters are hidden and people should read - some elric, some kane with karl edward wagner.

Always thought this was a manga comic book, never knew it was actually literature. Worth a look. The Beserk series were awesome. Much better than the anime. Never read a Japanese author. I've read Shogun by James Clavell though. It was one of my first books and still one of the best I've ever read.

The books are great for fans of any form. I also kinda noticed that Japanese authors love westerns and kinda sprinkle those kinda vibes into the stories but in a different way. I really enjoy it

@@slowlyred2082 Not surprising. The concept of the American “Lone Ranger” is originally based upon the Japanese Ronin (wandering samurai).

People called me “D” my whole life because my first name starts with a “D.” So, one can only imagine why I bought this book. I was pleasantly surprised at how engaging it was considering I’d never once thought about reading Japanese literature.
