Vampirella is known by many as a provacative vampire temptress hailing from the pages of comic books. An indie femme fatale who has graced the reader with her presence for decades, but did you know she also had a terrible 90s film adaptation. Starring Talisa Soto and Roger Daltrey, directed by a B movie and later adult film director Jim Wynorski this film has all the makings of a cult classic. Witness poor acting, poor effects a confusing plot and a ride you definitely do not want to miss here on Casually Comics!

Hold on the Chopping Mall director, also did The Hills Have Thighs and The Devil Wears Nada, those Late Night HBO/Cinemax classics? No wonder he got REAL mad when Agents of Shield did a homage to it, because he's clearly known for making good decisions. I knew Talisa Soto, Kitana of Mortal Kombat herself was in this, and unfortunately, that's still her best role, and second best thing she did, the first being married to Benjamin Bratt. Wait... Brian Bloom is in this?! Captain America from Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heroes, Jackie Estacado from The Darkness?! Why am I losing my mind to this lol Oh wow, you weren't kidding about the topless scenes, it's so 90's and you can see why he did softcore films.

I think a new adaptation of Vampirella could work if they went for a dark horror vibe with a fair amount of sensuality. And of course they actually have to care about the movie. I don't know what to do with the costume though. Because as it is in the comics, it seems like Vampirella can't take a deep breath without falling out of it, let alone fight. Daltrey up to this point had a pretty spotty record as an actor. There's vampire imagery in Lisztomania (to go with the Christ imagery in his earlier collaboration with Ken Russell, the movie version of Tommy). Later he was an evolved dinosaur from an alternate universe on "Sliders". Haven't had the opportunity to check out his other early lead role in McVicar, but I'm not expecting great things (apparently he got the part because they needed someone who could sing).

This was cool. I'd love to see you cover more comic book adaptations in future episodes. Movies (both theatrical and straight-to-video) and shows (live-action and animated), pilots, games, etc.

I have been reading everthing Vampirella for about 15 years. And each year I get another archive of the earliest stuff ( one of my kids does love me ). But never thought much about the movie until now. Your convinced me. I gotta see it. Please do Swords of Sorrow as Vampirella stars with an entire League of Extraordinary Gentleladies. Also, I would love to hear your take on Vampirella: The Dark Powers which is converging with Red Sonja: The Super Powers in the conclusion ( I think ) which will be out next month

Heavy Metal magazine started in 1977 a USA version of Metal Hurlant. Kevin Eastman, creator of TMNT took over the magazine in 1992 he married Julie Strain in 1995 and used her photos to help promote the magazine and comics. The main character in the animated Heavy Metal 2000

Yeah, Julie Strain in the 90's was the best choice for Vampirella. I wonder why they couldn't get her. Sadly, the DVD is going for $50 US on eBay and is not on streaming. :(

I wonder if they choose daltrey for this because he sung "don't let the sun go down on me" on the end credits of the vampire film "the lost boys"

Sometimes these no-budget z movies can win you over, because you can tell the people involved are genuinely making an effort (if you've ever seen Corman's FANTASTIC FOUR, the actors in that one are trying so hard, you just want to reach into the screen and hug them). But this obviously isn't one of those times. Poor Vampi.

As you discussed this I eventually had a memory of watching this on VHS. But totally forgot anything about the movie other than remembering I watched a Vampirella movie once upon a time.

You would never believe it, but I wrote a Vampirella move and posted it to Facebook back in 2012. And now suddenly there's a remake on the way and my Vampirella page and movie script on Facebook suddenly came up missing. To make things worse, the same thing happened with a Twisted Metal movie I created... Same year the difference is my Facebook page for Twisted Metal is still there. But suddenly a TV show is being made..... Convenient coincidence? or Stolen idea? You judge for yourself.

Vampirella is perfect the way it is. I would’ve loved working on that set. Mediocrity is so much fun.

We need to bring back cheesy superhero movies. It's all dark and gritty these days. Less Ben Afflecks and more Adam Wests!

Thanks for that. It's true that even for Wynorski, it was terrible and beyond redemption. I felt sorry for Roger Daltrey, I don't think he needed the money from it. Then again, it was a little before all the obviously lucrative The Who reunions from 1996 onward. I don't know what they promised him to be in it. Anyway, in Germany, the Vampirella movie was included in a B-movie series aptly named "The Worst Movies of All Time", a series with comedy commentary and drinking games that is sort of our version of Mystery Science Theater 3000.

Why did it take a long time to get this made, and why couldn't they get decent backing for it? The pitch meeting would have been about one minute long: "Smoking hot scantily-clad vampire babe with good name recognition." "How much do you need?"

I don't think I'd heard of this, though I had heard of a few of his other bad movies (Chopping Mall and The Bare Wench Project 2). I don't think I've ever heard of them. I will try to find somewhere to stream Vampirella though. I just wish that it had been cast a bit better. You're right, it definitely needed an actress who could emote.

Roger Daltry always seems to enjoy any role he gets. I mean look at his role in Highlander: the Series. I think he was actually the best part if that show.
