Van Beuren's Tom & Jerry - Rocketeers (1932)

This is NOT M-G-M's famous cat-and-mouse cartoon team, but a Mutt-and-Jeff type duo that starred in about two dozen cartoons produced by the Van Beuren studio between 1931 and 1933. In this particular entry, a trip to the moon turns into an adventure under the sea.

Had grandparents who told me about these. Its wonderfull to discover cartoons from this era aside from their social faux passe @ times, they make good insights to the mindframe of people @ the time. TYVM for posting this bit of history.

Opening music is recycled from 1931’s Trouble, a previous Tom & Jerry outing. To be more specific, the marching band scene in which T&J try to follow the band

Van Beuren himself was in a cartoon, it was called 'Van Boring', and it was a lampoon of him.

4:37 The mermaid is Texas Guinan, a notorious entertainer and speakeasy owner. Her trademark greeting to her clientele was “Hello, Suckers!”

Oh how, we love to want a fish store. That’s all we wish for, a lovely fish store. We have the Mermaid, Oh dressed for just like dolly, We have our little fish for doing better then the, then the folly. Sweet water flower in the window we say, we put it on the scale, and say for giving this way. Oh how we love to want a fiiiiiiiiiish store, We sell nothing, but but, how’a fun. Oh how we love to want a fish store, that’s all we wish for, a lovely fish store. 2 all the pattys, we sell them in a hatty, and to all the cones in mission, we would sell the self devision. They say an apple keeps the doctor away, but we don’t need a doctor with the mermaid everyday. Oh how we love to want a fish store, I once had to harry, and one snout.

Joseph Barbera. Hanna was over at Harman-Ising around 1932 in California. Van Beuren was New York

Sotiris Kosmas Just myself I prefer the 1932 Tom and Jerry myself, I just love the surrealism in them and the off the wall Pre Hays Code craziness of them as well., The 1940 Tom and Jerry's for me are just too formulaic and they became something of a standard for animation on the cheap for Hanna & Barbara especially in the late 1940's and 1950's onwards IMHO. But I'm probably more a Fleischer fan when it comes to vintage B&W cartoons than a Van Beuren one.
