So great that Peter and the other gents meet regardless of VDGG; having lunch and chatting as old friends. That's the way it should be - if only other artists could put their egos aside to do the same! Peter's been an inspiration to me for over a decade, having gotten into the group aged 15. He'll always be in my top 10 song writers. J

Peter, you have made such an incredible artistic impact. Whenever I have to release angst, you have facilitated the process- and I am in awe of what it has taken to keep getting the music out. Thank you.

Late one night John Peel was mumbling away, about something or other (possibly Kenny Dalglish's latest flash of brilliance) and then he said words to the effect of, 'Here's the first track from Van Der Graff Generator's new album, Godbluff.' Echoed flute notes. A compelling voice that sang, 'Here, at the glass, all the usual problems, all the habitual farce.' It was like hearing something that I had been waiting to hear all my life. It was like love. It was like I brought the album the next day and the backtracking soon followed. If I had to throw all my music away but keep just one band, I'd have to argue for Hammill's solo albums as well. Definitely love.

I was a huge VDGG/ Peter Hammill fan during the seventies . I used to wear a cream coloured Peter Hammill monogram badge ( remember those ? ) on my denim jacket . Very few had any idea who the badge represented . I also won a signed PH album after one of my questions to Peter Hamill was read out to him by the radio presenter on whose late night music show he appeared as a guest on after I'd written umpteen letters urging the host to get the great man on . It worked . Still have the signed LP

Was that John Diliberto's show out of Phila. in the 80s? In those days there were very, very few records stores carrying pH/VDGG albums but the long drives to them were rewarded. Except when the guy dropped the only copy of Killers, Angels, Refugees, Hammill's 1st book, behind a high bookshelf that couldn’t be unfastened from the wall! That was a sad ride home.

Btw what was the question you asked?
@ThefightingCelt

No , it was actually on a radio station in the West of Scotland called , Radio Clyde . Jeff Cooper , I think , was the DJ ' s name .

Peter Hammill was actually a bit taken aback by my question . He had just released the Sitting Targets album ( the signed album in question ) ; I said it was probably my least favourite of his solo albumd to date and asked if it was a conscious decision or not to make an album which was aimed at the current new wave music listeners , departing from the darker , more acoustically , organ driven music of earlier albums which his fan base preferred . Needless to say , he wasn't too enamoured by the question . I think he took umbrage at the veiled suggestion that he was in the process of dumbing down . He signed the album nonetheless lol

Saw VdGG live a few years ago, PH still had a full head of hair. Can't believe how much he's aged! Sad to say, he looks much older than 68. At least he's still plugging away at his music. When PH was young he looked like Orlando Bloom.

@@newforestpixie5297 Didn't he suffer a heart attack before VdGG reunited? A heart attack could have also contributed to him looking older than his age. Add drinking to the mix. At least he doesn't have the pressures most average people have trying tp earn a living. PH has been quite lucky being able to earn a living via his music. That and not having to pay for health insurance. Living in a country with socialized medicine alleviates a lot of stress! In the UK, health insurance isn't tied to a person's job, which means people don't have to stay at soul sucking jobs in order to have health insurance.

It looks a bit ‘ grand ‘ to be his doesn’t it. I’d not have anticipated the gaudy gold vibe going on like with that picture frame . Interior design is not my thing at all but omg I just noticed the animal head above his head ! No way is that his place- he’s been Vegan forever I believe. Fucking weird irony if that is his - my lady and children wouldn’t stand for it , nor would I 🏴😇❤️from hordle-on-sea

BRING BACK THE 2 SAX MAN DAVE JACKSON FOR A REUNION ALBUM AND TOUR. I THINK PINK FLOYD AND TRAFFIC WERE INFLUENCED BY VDGG . THEY KIND OF PATTERNED THEIR SOUND AND WRITING AFTER THEM. THESE GUYS HAD A DARK INTENSE POWERFUL SOUND. THEY MAY HAVE HAD A BIGGER INFLUENCE ON METAL THAN MOST PEOPLE MAY REALIZE, AS WELL AS BANDS LIKE CHICAGO.

I was amazed to read in John Lydons’ biography that PH was a big influence upon him and how he’d pissed off their manager ( the sex Pistols ) when on a ‘ desert island discs ‘ type programme on Capitol Radio , Lydon played two from Peters’ solo material and gushed about the fellas originality. 🏴😇
