The song's lyrics are something that should be taught at universities. And Hammill should be made (if he already isn't) a Honorate Doctor of Music. And having seen him in Stuttgart, April 2007, so simple,emaciated and friendly, I propose nothing less than a canonization of this driven artist! Do I exaggerate? No, but he always has. And I thank him and his colleagues warmly for that.

I lost count of the amount of acid and magic mushroom trips I had with my mates back in the 70’s, with VDGG and Hammill’s solo albums as the soundtrack! “Still Life”, “Pawn Hearts”, “Chameleon In The Shadow Of The Night”, “The Silent Corner, The Empty Stage” and “Nadir’s Big Chance” being particular acid favourites! 🍄 👌😎

I suppose the difference between VDGG and many other bands around in this era was that they were much more of a 'song' band rather than being a bunch of instrumentalists showing off their technique. Hammill's songs are always the focal point and the music rarely strays from being 'interpretive'. I always felt their music had a mimetic quality: things such as Lighthouse Keepers where they imitate foghorns and the churning sound of a ship's engine.

25 years ago Peter Hammill went in Turin (Italy) to play in the Colosseo Teather. I was there and i wonder that there were more or less thirty people in all the teather. Italian people do not appreciate this kind of singer. Hammill really is an excellent singer.

I'm a woman and I love VDGG, and this is one of my all time favorites. I agree not many women like VDGG. I have to admit it was my husband who introduced me to the band long time ago and at first I couldn't listen to the music. It was too overwhelming, as for most people who here them for the first time. But because I already was into Prog and metal music when I was young, after a short while I got totally hooked and still am. There is hope... don't give up

Here at the glass - all the usual problems, all the habitual farce. You ask, in uncertain voice, what you should do, as if there were a choice but to carry on miming the song and hope that it all works out right. Tonight it all seems so strange - my spirit feels rigid, my body deranged; still that's only from one point of view and we can't have illusion between me and you, my constant friend, ever close at hand - you and the undercover man. I reflect: 'It's very strange to be going through this change with no idea of what it's all been about except in the context of time...' Oh, but I shirk it, I've half a mind not to work it all out. Is this madness just the recurring wave of total emotion, or a hide for the undercover man, or a litany - all the signs are there of fervent devotion - or the cracking of the dam? It's cracked; smashed and bursting over you, there was no reason to expect such disaster. Now, panicking, you burst for air, drowning, you know you care for nothing and no-one but yourself and would deny even this hand which stretches out towards you to help. But would I leave you in this moment of your trial? Is it my fault that I'm here to see you crying? These phantom figures all around you should have told you, you should have found out by now, if you hadn't gone and tried to do it all by yourself. Even now we are not lost: if you look out at the night you'll see the colours and the lights seem to say people are not far away, at least in distance, and it's only our own dumb resistance that's making us stay. When the madness comes let it flood on down and over me sweetly, let it drown the parts of me weak and blessed and damned, let it slake my life, let it take my soul and living completely, let it be who I am. There may not be time for us all to run in tandem together - the horizon calls with its parallel lines. It may not be right for you to have and hold in one way forever and yet you still have time, you still have time.

@mariojorgecaeiro2 жыл бұрын
True! First three more mental, conceptual ;) VDGG and Genesis more performative, yes. Top stuff all of them, with Floys somehow really in between the spiritual and the emotional; this said, they generate a sort of circle, Floyd in the middle, the others circling around. Nt that Floyd us better, it is just more stable, ambient, while these other four motherfuckers clearly explode in rhythmic patterns, sonic buildings, structural provocations, etc. Thanks for your comment! Really made me rethink my relation with these TOP FIVE agents of my musical life.

No they were never underrated, they had a select audience who just adored them, and still do. They had a niche all to themselves, timeless with the their brand of jazz-prog music. I so hope Jackson gets back sometime, cos they don't quite cut it without him I would love to see them at Glasto before they just don't want to do it any more. I can't understand why thy have this magnetism for me, but they just are such class.

I saw them last year in chicago, and as a 30 something year old, it was, truly, a dream come true. They had incredible energy and even w/o Dave Jackson were stunning to see live!
