This is the first video on the VanMediemen RF -85 where we start to prepare the car for the season after we bought it in Denmark last year. Here we have an overview and we re-build a starter shaft///

Doesn’t look like old Rusty is ever going to see any love again, since this channel is turning into race car central...... I do appreciate the Commodore 64 reference tho.

Besides checking the tension on the oil pump belt, check for age and wear. I had one snap apart on my Royale years ago and and immediately dropped to zero oil pressure. I shut it off quick enough to save the engine from damage. The idiot light for loss of oil pressure is necessary I think. Maybe a smaller one though. You'll notice that before reading low prsseure on a guage.

Hi Drew, indeed that warning light is very importend as we don't watch the gauges all the time on the track.. I will install a new high intensity LED light , but not that big... I am thinking of building an audio warning, a beep or so remote into the helmet... Just a small transmitter and receiver.. with an earpiece and a tone... would work better. Not sure yet , but considering it

@@D3Sshooter That's a clever idea. I'm sure you can make it work.

Thats looks like a really good buy. Nice having one with such history. Repainting it to the commadore look would be really cool 👌 If you wanted to do a new exhaust theres a guy called Calvin Elston that does wonders with exhaust. Could probably get 10-20 hp at the top end plus a better low end response with an exhaust made to his specs.

@@D3Sshooter I guess hes very busy so it might be hard to get him to take on a job and pretty expensive if he accept. I aim to build my own headers according to his ideas. Hes written alot on speedtalk forums where his nick is ”exhausted”. The main thing with his headers is the use of stepped headers where the first tube is much smaller than usual. Hes built stuff for nascar and other racing for many years. Reading his posts on speedtalk have been very interesting. To do the design one can use the sheet on the homepage of burnsstainless to get the fundamental design. Then adopt the stepped tubes per Calvins views. As I understand thats how he himself does it nowadays.

Nice car. Be worth trying to lift those oil pipes (4:35) higher - use an elbow with tighter radius maybe. They look vulnerable if you go off track and might pulled off. Have done this in a race and didn't notice subsequent loss of oil pressure which seized the engine. Hence my car also got a HUGE oil pressure light.

The oil pump is driven off the jack shaft, but what is the cable at the rear of the pump? Mechanical tach? Ha!, soon as you started it I saw Sir Jackie Stewart's face. Love that growl.

Great videos. Thank you for spending the time in producing them - I know the editing takes longer than the filming !! Is there an engineering reason why you couldn’t turn the starter cog around so the unused part engages or was it “handed”?

Thanks for the comments, its a spreadsheet like excel or numbers and I just put in those formula's: You need to know the powerband of your engine (RPM's). torque band of the engine, Your Final drive (diff ) ratio, your wheel diameter. To calculate the speed in a specific gear, take your (engine RPM) multiplay with the (Ratio of your selected gear), take that result and multiply it by the (Ratio of the Diff.) Take the output of the diff and multiplay this by the (tire diameter in cm x 3,14). You now have the the distance (in cm) driven in one minute, multiply this by 60 (minutes to the hour) and divide by 1000 ( for km). That gives you the Km/hr at that specific engine RPM. You can do the same for the torque on the wheels, but use the engine torque instead of RPM and divide instead multiply . Do this for the different RPM's ( in an excel or numbers spreadsheet you can do all this very easily) . The results can then be plotted in a graph also in excel or numbers . Just insert a graph...

Steve, you mentioned the low power of your lathe, with you experience, what minimal power would you recommend?
@D3Sshooter
@D3Sshooter Жыл бұрын
I would love to provide a meaning full answer, but a 1 to 2Hp electrical motor would really help. It all depends on the diameter of the piece and the RPM's on the lathe..

Why don't you focus on making one racecar as fast as possible (and thus your own skills) ? Seems too much your time and attention is divided over too many cars. Or did you buy the other ones to smarten up and sell?

I have five of them , RF-85, DL-19, Konig VW, Konig Kawa and the MGB GT.. They are all keepers, not to sell.. So, work on one untill its in a good racing condition and restored as much as is needed... I am not into making showroom ready.. That is not the point as i do race them every so often. Let me say this, they are fast enough, its the driver that is not fast enough .... To old and to late for me... Of course I will tune them ,as I always do... TXS for the comments
