Roth once said that Van Halen wasn't Hard Rock or Heavy Metal... they were "Big Rock". After the debut album and tour with Black Sabbath, they did adjust their sound a bit because Warner Bros. wanted a hit. You nailed it, Biz! When Roth split, I followed Dave and his music. I am a shlyrics guy, too! The lyrics have always been important to me. Roth was a lyrical genius. He wrote 95% of the lyrics (excluding covers, of course). Hagar's sappy love songs just completely turned me off. When Dave wrote about love, it was always with a sense of humor... never sappy. People will say that Hagar has a "better voice". Tons of singers have a better range and vocal ability than Roth, but he had exactly what it took to make those tunes come alive. As quarterback/frontman for the first six albums ('78-'84), he had a lot to do with the success of the band. I think you'll enjoy VH II getting heavier after the first two tracks. Rock on, bro!

Saw this live in 1978 and the band was super tight. This was a huge radio hit at that time for all us teens cruising in our muscle cars.

Also you’ll love Beautiful Girls - very catchy song and Roth is at his best!!! Man, there will never be a band like VH. At least we were alive to experience it.

They finished their tour for their debut and were told they had 6 weeks to produce an album to break even for the year. They got f*****. Pretty decent record though. It has held up. And we're still captivated by what Eddie's playing on here.

I saw the tours for "Van Halen" and for "Van Halen II"...and I gotta tell ya Biz, both were intense, with Eddie & David flying out over the audience, and Alex' drums literally on fire! They also had this sort of 'contest' going on with ZZ Top...over who was the loudest in concert. Not sure who won...things were kinda fuzzy back then at times. 😉👍 Oh, and "Beautiful Girls" is fire! ✌😎

I was very young when this came out, and it was my introduction to VH. My brother had their first album, but due to my young age, I liked this album best at the time. I guess it was more pop than hard Rock. I love all their albums.

For me it's Fair Warning or 1984 , it's impossible for me to choose. Just like when people ask what your favorite V.H. song is. There's so many on the first 6 albums and the more you listen to the songs you hear and pick up different things you like about them and it depends on your mood too. They are simply the greatest American Rock and Roll Band of all time, over Aerosmith, Guns and Roses and Metallica, at least for me personally. They were the American Led Zeppelin in terms of $uccess Their harmonies always reminded me of The Beach Boys. Eddie created that sound, it didn’t exist before him and everyone copied it and tried to be like him. Long live the king EVH

I agree... Van Halen (album #1) is still THE iconic Van Halen album... 'Van Halen II' is great, but not near what the first album was. My fave Van Halen album is a Sammy Hagar one - 'For unlawful carnal knowledge' (or 'F.U.C.K.' for short!) one of the heaviest Van Halen albums in the catalog and every song is a banger from 'Poundcake' to 'Top of the world'... 🔥🔥🤘🤘

For me it's FAIR WARNING, including their debut album. Why? I don't know. Maybe because it returns me to my 15. Maybe because it's opening song Mean Street is so good.

This is the song that introduced me to VH. I was a huge VH after that. When David left and Sammy took over, I lost interest in VH. I bought their first album with Sammy, 5150, and it was the last VH album I bought. I do like Sammy, but his own solo stuff.

Honestly, I'm torn between their debut album and their last album with David Lee Roth 1984. Easily their two best albums. Both all killer no filler.

I was a teen in the 80's at the height of Van Halen's popularity. I was a big fan of them. When Sammy came in and replaced David I enjoyed them even more. Sammy Hagar has an incredible voice. I like it better than David's for sure. Good reaction, Biz! Much love✌🏻❣️

"More chicks"? By the time this album came out, Van Halen shows were already mostly chicks. I saw many 80's rock concerts. Nothing even compared to the energy at a Van Halen show. Roth was a master frontman.

To me David Lee Roth was the best singer for Van Halen

They get progessively worse each album so that would make VH II my favorite after the first. Even though I appreciate Sammy from his time in Montrose and his solo career, when he joined, Van Halen was no longer listenable in my opinion.
