Van Life Cooking | How Can You Bake Without An Oven In A Tiny Van? | RoadPro Portable Stove
Within a tiny van there are a lot of things which commonly people would think you cannot do. One of which is baking! In less than 35 square feet how could it be possible? But believe it or not where there is a will there is a way and using a new Portable Stove cooking in a small space just got a little easier. In today's video I will explore the 12 volt cooking option of the RoadPRO Portable Stove and how it works with common dishes that might be of interest to the average nomad. From frozen to fresh baked bread this thing can do it all!

I cooked in a RoadPro a lot when I drove truck. A favorite meal was a small beef roast with all of the veggies. Another was bbq chicken. Do wrap the top of the aluminum pan as it will not only keep the interior cleaner, but also retains heat better. If you're worried about the bottom of the oven getting too hot, set it on a small sheet pan...it will also catch any drips that may escape when bouncing on rough roads. Pretty much anything you can cook in a slow cooker can be cooked in a Road Pro!

It's the perfect size to use oven ready lasagna noodles in and make lasagna... You can bake biscuits.. You can make pork chops ,chicken breasts, Spanish race with ground beef, Chicken and dumplings, I do Is 2 pork loin chops. One large carrot chopped 1 potato chopped a quarter of an onion chop.. Add a couple tablespoons of cream on mushroom soup.. No extra water or broth is necessary because your meat gives off a lot of juices.. It's the same no matter what meat you use.. And you have a complete meal in about 2 hours.. If your chops are thick..

Covered it with foil opened it up about 3 hours later it looked freaking amazing

Something that works pretty well is a variant of baked apples. Use whatever baked apple recipe that you like, but with this difference; chop the apples - instead of stuffing them - into approximately 2" to 3" cubes. mix with the other ingredients, saving any sugar or honey until last. Sprinkle the sweetener on top (the sweetener will slowly melt down into the ingredients during cooking). Add a couple of tablespoons of water or juice (apple or orange). Cover the tray tightly with foil, then bake for an hour. Try not to open the lid during cooking because these things are like crock pots. Every time you open the cooker, you lose all of the built up heat in the cooker and add 15+ minutes to the cooking time.

If you wanted to be some what eco-friendly you could get silicone pans I was also thinking you could get a silicone muffin pan, cut to size, put water in the base and make those egg bites they sell at Starbux for a bazillion dollahs. I have one. I love it. I've cooked salmon, meatballs, veggies, you name it. It does take a longer time to cook than if you use a regular oven. But for traveling, or sometimes on a jobsite, I'll put something in and at lunch time I have a hot meal. Some places that sell them sell cookbooks for them. I get my aluminum pans from one of the dollar stores or even Wally World. You do have to be careful of cooking food that creates steam. It hangs on the upper parts and when you open it, it will drip hot water.
@BunnyPlaysHere
@BunnyPlaysHere 2 жыл бұрын
I did notice that.. someone told me the best way to combat that is to unplug and let sit for a couple of minutes before opening. This allows the steam to chill a bit when being opened so you are less likely to have that initial contact. I don't know haven't tried it yet.. I just was very carful when opening it initially anyway....I found the dollar store to be great for the dishes but also will work with what I find near me so that might also mean a Walmart from time to time, but they seemed to have them in larger quantities for around $2-3 so that isn't bad.

I've had one of these for 5 years...when I drove cross country in my 2009 VW Sportwagen, I used this to reheat pre-made, frozen wraps. I took them out of the main cooler in the morning and put them into an insulated bag so they could begin to defrost. They were wrapped in foil and I just popped them into one of those foil tins in the stove. Within about 40 minutes they were piping hot! A great hot lunch!! I plugged it into my cig lighter, and put it on the passenger seat floor...Was fabulous!!!! Loved your test of the power draw...planning to go out again and buy a power pack, so this is really helpful....Want to add a compressor fridge and would love to use a crockpot, too. Here's a tip...I do this at home, using a 1 + quart crockpot, the small size like the 12V units sold for the car. Spray the crock, put some sauce in the bottom, add DRY pasta..more sauce with maybe a bit of water to cover the pasta...then pile on your onions, zucchini, mushrooms, more sauce.....At home a throw a towel over the top...It cooks on HIGH for about an hour...and it's a great casserole...yummy!!!!!k Or, do it slower for about 6 hours or so and then it will stay warm if you cover the crock with a piece of Reflectix. Play it by ear and you'll learn the times as you experiment. I bet you could do it in a RoadPro....worth a shot!! OH..what was your final numbers on the power draw??

I love the fact that you used both the jackery and the 300watt one ,but it wasn't a fair comparison because you used different items to cook at different cooking times and even different temperatures. It was nice you used so many different items to cook and it thank you for mentioning the fact it wasn't going to burn through your floor panel,so now on a long run I know I can have my dinner done before I stop driving which is really nice. Thank you .

I’m also wanted to use the two power stations just to show that they can work on both of the power stations themselves. A lot of people use this while driving down the road like I do primarily however some people do you want to know if they can run it off of the power station so I wanted to show the variety of different wattages To allow people to see that you could have a large power station or a small one and it will work. It wasn’t so much about comparing the cooking times as much as it was just showing that it can work and how much draw that it has

I picked one of these up at a thrift store for $4. Thanks for being so thorough with the experimentation with this thing. I have one, I use it mainly to warm leftovers. One tip to help with burning on the bottom of the aluminum pan is I use 2 stainless skewers, cut the length to fit the oven, put them in the bottom of the oven then put the aluminum pan on top of the skewers. They seem to really cut down on how much I burn. I really love those banana nut muffin mixes, and they make an apple cinnamon one I like too.

Sometimes I also substitute in finally chopped onion and it is delightful the little crispies of the onions make for a delicious flavor

I’ve used foil on the bottom. I recently bought some thing that I haven’t tried yet. It is from the canning section of Walmart and it is used to put underneath the jars when you can. It is black and zigzag and round, made out of silicone. You don’t have to keep it round you can keep it in a straight line and it’s probably a half inch tall. Anytime you put something between the pan and the stove it causes a longer cooking time.

Love your enthusiasm I sincerely wish I knew about these (or if they were around) 20-30 years ago. These would be absolutely wonderful for the military moving across the country to their new post. Some of those moves are crazy long, Florida to Washington, Maine to Texas or worse California. Then always the dreaded up to Alaska. Thank you for taking the time and smiling a lot!

I have found that it is super nice especially whatever I have a long drive ahead. I can throw some food in there and then stop off and eat a warm meal and that is wonderful.

This thing is changing the way I look at cooking opportunities in my van!! I am very eager to try some of the things everyone is suggesting in the comments. The meatloaf sounded particularly exciting.. but so did the brownies!!!

My son travels out of town to meet with clients. He eats out when he’s on the road. This would enable him to eat healthier meals.

I bought one of thes about a month ago, different brand but looks the same and I love it. Right now I only use it for frozen meals ( I drive rideshare) but actually plan to cook in it once I move into my van. I added a little bit of water and in under an hour my meal was fully cooked.

I bought essentially the same thing from Canadian Tire: AutoTrends 12V Car Food Warmer. 3-L. My son is picking it up tomorrow, along with other camping goodies that I ordered, as I am too sick to drive. Such is life. Plus a pizza! He is a good man. I have silicon bread pans at home that might fit. But I'll still put the aluminium pans in, so I don't have to wash up on the road. The silicon pans have ridges for feet, so that should stop overcooking on the bottom. Jon in rural BC, Canada
