This happened to me, last fall. Pack rats in AZ destroyed my electrical system, and I was stranded. I hired a mechanic and rented a U-haul, leaving my suv camper in AZ for five months. Yes, I know the anxiety very well indeed! I'm so glad your dad had you there for back up, moral support, and most importantly, a ride home.

Why didn't you call AAA? Especially if place was so close ? Oh guess you made it to the place. And assume the repair was something that takes a while to repair???? 😏🤔 Hope all works out for you both.

Having had a few break downs on the road, I know it's a horrible sinking feeling. But if you drive enough we will all experience this. You and Dad will be up and running again, I know this won't stop either one of you.

A lesson for us all, on the road. Let someone know where you are at all times and ideally know someone in the general area who could be of assistance. Not be an option for many, a Garmin 67i is considered an essential tool for hikers & boaters. A small unit about size of a thick coin purse. Usually snapped on a jacket collar offers pinpoint location (mapping) & emergency calls via text. This works via satellites for instantaneous communication. The advantage is battery works for 11 days unlike phone needing daily charging. Likely you have seen this before but didnt recognize what it is. If your a solo travel recommend it. Monthly fee $12/mo + $600 for unit which believe has 20+ year warranty.

I have AAA. On I-5 in CA my tire light came one. I pulled over. Called AAA. Driver arrived, said my tire was good, convinced me to drive into the next town and tire shop. He drove in front of me the whole way and didn't charge me a dime. I have used AAA several times.

It’s not a quick fix or something that we would know about rapidly unfortunately so the options are more limited or would start to add up to a much more costly endeavor

Imagine that is Plan B. If the expense of a motel can be avoided they will do it. Maybe a campground nearby. Take time check out local sites of interest and best eating spots while repairs are being made. I've heard of repair shops offering advice where travelers can stay.

I do have AAA, however us being so close it would’ve not made a lot of sense to attempt to use that not to mention with AAA. My coverage may not necessarily work for Dad’s van because of the size difference of the things I’ve learned about AAA is for larger vehicles sometimes they struggle.

There were a lot of things going wrong with it so it was not something that was easily diagnosed everything that he looked at did not appear to be the full issue so taking it to someplace that deals with these on a daily basis was important just so that they could run all the codes
