Van Life | Endless Freedom or Chaotic Instability?

Would you rather have endless freedom but no stability, or a home and stability but limited freedom? It’s a question I ask myself often, and an area where I’m always trying to strike some kind of balance. I found a little bit of both in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Along with some beautiful views and a much needed hot bath. Thanks for being here :)

07:28 i want a pet

Hey :) I’m Christian Schaffer, and I’ve lived on the road full-time since May 2018. This journey began in 2013 when I left the corporate world to build my career as an outdoor adventure & travel photographer. As a semi-minimalist, I eventually decided to donate/sell most of my belongings and move into my 4x4 Nissan Xterra. After 14 months of SUV living and falling madly in love with the open road - I bought a van and hired a team to build it out. Van life enables me to experience and document the beauty of our natural world on a whole new level, all while having my home and office nearby. My hope is that by sharing my own personal highs and lows along this (sometimes) wild journey, you might be inspired to hit the road or spend more time outdoors. Maybe one day I'll see you out on that open road 🚐
*My van is a 2019 Ram ProMaster 1500 High Roof, 136" WB with 38K miles*

Christian, Yes. It’s both. I think it’s the effort required that we thrive on. Psychologist Paul Bloom said (paraphrasing here) why people willingly choose discomfort as there is a “sweet spot” here. You have to be challenged to just the right existent... threading the needle between too easy, which leads to boredom, and too hard which leads to stress and anxiety. We seek out projects (or lifestyles) with difficulty and struggle… ones that involve surmounting obstacles. This is a large part of what gives life meaning. This sweet spot is where we find meaning and purpose... in essence, a sense of being alive. Stay safe you two. Mitch ✌

This makes a lot of sense. Work out to hard you get injured, but not hard enough and you don’t get stronger. Push yourself as hard as you can to make the progress in life you want, but too hard and you burn out.

When I'm watching your vlog in the background, I think I hear messages about the war in Ukraine on your radio and that's how I thought about a carefree life, which when nothing tragic happens, we don't notice on a daily basis how lucky we are, we can't enjoy small things, a moment of silence, a moment with friends. I am writing this because I am from Poland and I have seen this tragedy up close (there are already 3.5 million Ukrainians in Poland) of mothers with small children who walked in the cold with tiny children in their arms for several tens of kilometers to reach Poland and before that they had normal life . There were so many tears, so much pain and then a person reaches what is important in life, so live every moment, live your life, absorb beautiful nature, contemplate sunrises, because nothing is given forever. (sorry if it's spelled weird - google translate)❤🌲

I want to do a bunch of traveling over the next 5-6 years. My ideal situation would be to buy a small place in the areas I love then rent them out when I'm not there when I retire. Could be semi-nomadic, the small places could pay for themselves, make some income too. Pay a management company to take care of everything too keep things simple and stress free.

"Cat screaming in the empty bathtub for no reason" is my favorite kind of cat. I prefer stability over chaos, but I need freedom and flexibility too. For me that is achieved with a home-base but nothing at home that needs me there daily (my plants and fish are fine for a few days, if it's longer my mum drops by and helps out), my dog comes with me or stays with my mum depending on where I am going and if it's for work or holidays. My living situation is cheap, cozy and super nice though, not everyone has access to such a home-base. I would rather embrace chaotic instability than needing a whole salary just to make rent in a ditch. But even having that option to choose is a nice privilege.

Wow. I just had a thought. Can you imagine what Ansel Adams could have done with a drone with a great camera? You guys are pioneers... For me, much of my life has been, dealing with the strange things that have happened to me while I was making other plans, and what I chose to do about it. Sometimes you can fight it head on and sometimes you have to be patient and work through it. But you always can "go in a direction," explore, and start to shape it. A journey of a thousand miles starts with a first step. Taking that first and second step is what we call "faith". There may not be a perfect solution to every problem but there is ALWAYS a best solution. For me finding the best solution and then doing it has always been enough. Freedom is doing your best, being alive and on top of your game and doing your best, taking responsibility when necessary, loving, giving, enjoying the moment, sharing when you can. Luck is what happens to people who are prepared to see it and are capable and able take advantage of it. Luck happens. Opportunity is just another word for luck. God bless.

This was a great one, you're a talented artist with your filming style whether you realize it or not:). The balance can be difficult, but feel I've found my balance with owning a truck camper to base adventures and travels out of and a small 16x20 cabin as home base. In the end, the beauty in all of it is the change to and from;) See ya out there!

I've really come to appreciate your film making abilities. You have a wonderful cinematic style. If you ever run out of things to do, offer a series on how you do it. It's not simple and I bet a lot of folks would be interested. I'd pay for it.

Thanks for this video! You're a real inspiration to me. I hope I'll be able to try and pursue my own creative career on the road one day. Also, what a weird feeling to hear news about Ukraine over the speakers in your video while actually being in Ukraine! :)

@@ChristianSchaffer Thanks for your support! Yeah, I've been here all along, in a relatively safer region. I feel like I'm living in a history book. Reading one is much more fun than living in it, I'll tell you that. Anyway, thanks again and I can't wait for your next video :)

Very enjoyable! I loved the textures in snow you captured. So many cool touches to your video that blend well. Interesting question of freedom vs. stability. To the outsider that I am, if your videos are any indication you manage the balance well! Your rejuvenation routines for getting ready for the road again: laundry, repacking your storage, cleaning cushions, caulking your countertops, great stuff. I'm curious, how do you manage your healthcare? Thanks for another great effort!
@ChristianSchaffer

Thank you ☺️🙏🏻 Healthcare is tricky, it’s something I’m still researching to find a good fit. The problem with traditional health insurance is that most providers won’t cover out of network care, so I generally have to pay out of pocket whenever I’m away from Washington. Hoping to find some better solutions soon and when I do, I’ll probably share ✌🏻

For me I need a home and stability with a few freedom and instability here and there. I'm such a routine guy that if I am thrown off my routine without warning or preparation I will be unstable the whole day. I think this is why I am drawn to watching your van life, I know I can never survive it myself but I can somewhat do it watching your videos.
