This video is a story of hope and how becoming a nomad camping and boondocking in his trailer in the desert transformed this senior's life. At 64 Terry knew he could no longer do his back breaking job any longer. But he was facing a bleak future of poverty living on only social security. He had witnessed his elderly neighbors as rents increased amd inflation hit be reduced to small lives sitting in their apartments unable to afford to do anything, simply waiting for their lives to come to an end. Terry knew he didn't want that as his future. Hear what he did to change his future and how it has turniled out for him.
If you enjoy this video and want more like it hit that LIKE button as it really helps my channel.
Let me know in the comments if you know someone facing similiar circumstances living on social security.

Completely agree. This is why the auto unions fought hard to get retirement benefits back and pay raises for their workers. Still not far enough, but it’s something. All of the benefits and decent pay went away to fund executive pay. That’s just a fact. I recently learned our school provides no cost medical benefits to the executive administrators and they provide them with around a thousand a month to cover their out of pocket healthcare cost. This is in addition to their six figure salaries. Basically, their medical is free with no out of pocket expenses. Meanwhile the paraprofessional in the same school district making $15 an hour has to pay almost $800 a month to cover their family’s medical. They take home almost nothing after factoring in healthcare benefits. The only people that know about this discrepancy are the ones who work in hr and see this info and the administrators. This country has some serious problems. We don’t have universal healthcare because it would put the insurance companies and their executives out business. They lobby pretty hard against it. Meanwhile if you don’t have health insurance, the hospital can take your primary residence to offset the costs and that can throw a family into an expensive rent situation. It’s sickening.

I concur! G.L.O.W. found me about two or three weeks ago. My OCD would not let me watch it out of order........ So I had to put them all in order from the oldest first and, by golly, I'm here today!😊 These tips are really basic, and just so enriching. Even for those who are still in sticks and bricks. I love that you are so humble, as well as kind. Your voice is non-judgmental and even when you interview people that are in the Taj mahal of campers or a tent on the street, and all of the non-sticks and bricks options in between. There is never a sense of shame, or "why don't you just do this or that." Always respectful. Always humble. Always sensible. Thank you.

Worked all my life for the American dream only to lose my house due to excessive and unjust property taxes. Spring 2024 I will take the plunge of van life. Your videos are inspiring but nothing can prepare me for this change that is not by choice but by force. When I think about buying another house it falls back to making repairs and taxes. My quality of life in a house since 2020 became non existent all my retirement is going to repairs and taxes. The other downside is that the house cannot be sold for a profit due to repairs. I purchased my van November 2023 preparing to go off on the deep end of van life. Thanks for all your videos they give me a glimmer of hope.

My 89 yr old mom is living in our family home that has been maintained extremely well over the decades. If my dad hadn’t left a tidy nest egg for her, she would be in desperate shape financially. The inheritances thatwere planned for each of us three children have been whittled away consistently every year between increasing property taxes & costly repairs. As long as she can live independently, we could care less about any inheritance $$. We just want her to be able to make her own life choices, & not be forced to live in any diminished situation. It really is a crime to see so many people who have worked extremely hard for a meager or barely middle class living end up without any financial resources, & therefore no choices for their future, & end of life choices. My heart goes out to those among us in these difficult situations. I only wish more people would watch Carol’s & others’ channels in order to educate themselves about people living as. Nomads either part time or full time. Maybe then we could stop vilifying such a large portion of our society…& maybe even change some laws to protect people who need support. Blessings to all this holiday season.❤️

@@barbaramcintyre7000 Before COVID my nest egg was secure,I was debt free, after a series of unexpected family crisis back to back it drained my accounts. Now I'm back in debt buying a new van as opposed to a used one . To help me acclimate my family around the country with a driveway will allow me to park a few days at a time. This will help me pay off my van and look for a parcel of land.

Depends. If you get a National PPO Advantage plan, you can see any provider in the country with the same copay and deductible. A PPO plan means you can visit any provider, but the ones out of network will have higher copay and deductibles. An HMO means they will only pay for those providers in your network. We have a National PPO plan and haven't had any issues with it.

The First Time Homebuyers Programs in every state help pay the DP on a buyers first home. Also on another home if it's 3 years or more later. These programs are Administered by different entities & non-profits but you can publicly look them up and apply directly through them. They will be under different names but generalized under the "First Time Homebuyers Program" category. Or find a good licensed Realtor/Brokerage who specializes with these programs. You can contact any city's Board of Realtors to find those specific Realtors. I've worked at one of these FTHP Administrative offices in NJ putting the Buyers' individual packages together with the lenders, banks/mortgage companies, Realtors, Lawyers, etc plus as a Realtor. There will be certain things the buyers must do in return such as attending a short Homebuyer class which are very beneficial and interesting. The reason being is to help ensure that rookie homebuyers are educated with knowledge on how to plan for & handle the many challenges & expenses they'll encounter prior to owning their first home. Check it out and please spread the word.

It's horrible here in Oregon. Taxes keep going up, and more taxes keep getting added, so prices have gone up an average of 25% on everything! Yet our income has actually decreased in the sense that the cost of living increase hasn't kept up with the actual costs of living. I dropped everything but the bare necessities to get by, can no longer afford simple things like going out to lunch with a friend, having an adult beverage once in awhile, cable or satellite TV, even basic maintenance on my home has become unaffordable! I went back to work part-time in my retirement for awhile, but my osteoarthritis worsened and I can no longer do that. I've been boosting my immune system through eating healthier, and taking supplements because it's far cheaper in the long run than pharmaceuticals and the problems that come with them. I'm lonely because everyone in my age range is in the same boat... we can't afford anything beyond survival. Now our Governor wants to get rid of the tax benefits of having a mortgage to get more taxes out of us, and that will force most seniors out of their homes if it passes. The numbers of homeless people here has tripled just in the last 3 years. 😢

Terry and I are the same age. Regarding his working life, not to be harsh but if you work with your body age catches up to you. If your work abuses your back, knees, or feet, unless you have a sedentary job such as office work or computer-based work in an office or remotely as we get older, we cannot keep up. The larger point regarding Terry, who seems like a genuinely nice man who deserves better, the landlord greed is growing beyond sustainability. What are people to do: spend all their savings in 2-3 years be left to live the street until one passes?

This story plays out every day in every city in America, so sad but true. You have to plan for the future, it doesn't always work out but if you save just a little each week it becomes a nice nest egg for when you retire. Too many people choose dead end jobs that have no future financially and the reckless use of credit cards just multiplies the issues. I had a game plan and stuck to it, I joined the Air Force right out of high school did my twenty years, retired and then started driving a semi truck for the next twenty years, retired from that, so here I was 58 years old, with 2 good pensions coming in and no debt. I have never owned a house and have no desire to, I bought a small camper trailer that my 2021 Toyota Tacoma can pull and have been traveling for about 2 years. I usually stay in a free camp site the full 14 days, that way I only have to move 3 times a month, saves on gas, and wear and tear on the camper. I am taking my social security at 62, I have no reason to wait, enjoy it while you can because tomorrow is never guaranteed.

I don't think people choose a dead end job. It's more necessity than choice. Yes a lot of people don't plan well in life and they end up in a bad spot. But then that's just human nature really. People procrastinate. It's not something we should be shamming them for.

Unfortunately, a property owner will own their property for a very long time and keep the rents at a decent rate, but then either they die or they sell, the next person who buys the property has bought it for millions of dollars and they have no choice but to raise rents 😢 and this all comes back to the world economic forum's by 2030 you will own nothing and be happy, they don't even want landlords to own a building. So it's not always the landlord's fault. But then sometimes you get those slumlords out there that are just money hungry 😢. I know about this because I am a landlord myself. In my city they put in rent control, and all that did was make landlords who were owners of old mom and pop places want to sell their building. Because along with the rent control, they are making landlords pay for the rent control. The key word here is control, my husband and I have always been Fair landlords, but when the government comes in and wants to control the building that you own, most people just want to sell and run away. And every old building I've seen sold has been knocked down and condos being built in it's place. And these condos are being sold for over a million dollars each. The city just wants the property tax revenue. This is the only way they get around proposition 13. BTW, I will always be a beyond fair landlord, until we are forced to sell for some reason. Keep in mind some landlords are having just as hard of a time. Repairs on an old building can be very costly. Just for a new roof is about $20,000. Maybe more now. An apartment building is never paid off because you're always going to be paying taxes.

Thank you! Unfortunately the greedy landlords here in AZ take advantage of the no-limit yearly rent increases. It's terrible. I hear there's a new law coming into effect in 2024 here in AZ where there will be a ceiling on rent increases. Don't know how much.

For seniors and people on disability, you need to know your retirement and disability income is protected by federal and state laws. Meaning if you owe any 3rd party companies (credit cards, medical etc) and you simply can’t afford the payments, stop paying them. They can’t get your money even if they get a judgement against you. Take that money that you would normally pay on these bills and use it to survive on. We are in survival mode!❤❤
