My husband used to sing this song to me all the time when we were dating. Then alot after we were married too. Every year on my birthday. He passed away three months ago and my birthday is tomorrow. It will be the first birthday I won't hear him sing this song to me . I was 16 when he first started and I'll be 54 tomorrow. I keep listening to it now just to remember him. I miss him so much.

I married my brown eyed girl, she still takes my breath away. 35 yrs later and three older children. She is amazing and this was my song before I met her and I sang it to her and she said keep my day job. We laughed and just danced to it the other day when we were at our daughters house playing with our grand children. May Jesus continue to bless us from above. For he is great. Amen

So sorry for your loss. You are 2 years older than me and I’ve been with my husband for 42 years now, but I haven’t been very happy and things are now VERY bad between us, so I envy you the happiness you clearly had ! I am a strong believer in Jesus Christ and am sure in some way that we do not understand you will be reunited with your ‘ brown eyed girl ‘ . As Christ said, at the moment we all see ‘ through a glass darkly ‘. Actually, that quote may be from St Paul, but I’m no theologian !! May your God bless you, and even if you don’t believe in him/ her I do not think you will be forgotten ! Christine Knibb Scarff

My grandfather always said this song was written for him and my grandmother. She passed in 2015, and when they played this at her service the whole family was in tears. The only time I ever saw my grandfather cry. He passed last year, and although dementia had taken many of his memories he always still talked about her. Me and my dad used to dance around the house to this song blasting from his giant 1990s stereo system that took up a whole dang wall. We would face each other, hold hands and twist around. He was spin me and swing me around and sing to me. It’s one of my favorite memories! I didn’t see him much as he worked out of state, but he made the most of what we had when he was home. @@kylerk576 It's not that, I saw it on an interview that they wanted to make a kind of Calypso song. When it came time to record, Van said that he just got into the booth, sang the song as we know it, and when he got out and they played it through he realised that he'd been singing 'brown *eyed* girl', but it was written as brown *skinned* girl. He accidentally changed the song, but thought it was ok, so he just changed the name, instead. I think it works because most brown-skinned girls have brown eyes, but it also works for others with brown eyes.

Lyrics… Hey, where did we go? Days when the rains came Down in the hollow Playin' a new game Laughin' and a-runnin', hey, hey Skippin' and a-jumpin' In the misty morning fog with Our, our hearts a-thumping and you My brown-eyed girl And you, my brown-eyed girl And whatever happened To Tuesday and so slow? Going down the old mine with a Transistor radio Standing in the sunlight laughing Hiding 'hind a rainbow's wall Slipping and sliding All along the waterfall with you My brown-eyed girl You, my brown-eyed girl Do you remember when we used to sing? Sha-la-la, la-la, la-la, la-la, la-la tee-da Just like that Sha-la-la, la-la, la-la, la-la, la-la tee-da, la-tee-da So hard to find my way Now that I'm all on my own I saw you just the other day My, how you have grown Cast my memory back there, Lord Sometimes I'm overcome thinking 'bout it Making love in the green grass Behind the stadium with you My brown-eyed girl You, my brown-eyed girl Do you remember when we used to sing? "And every cat in the twilight's gray/ Every possible cat." The tortoiseshell cat, She sits on the mat, As gay as a sunflower she; In orange and black you see her wink, And her waistcoat’s white and her nose is pink, And her eyes are as green as the sea. But all is vanity, all the way; Twilight’s coming and close of day, And every cat in the twilight’s gray, Every possible cat. The tortoiseshell cat, She is smooth and fat, And we call her Josephine, Because she weareth upon her back This coat of colours, this raven black, This red of tangerine; But all is vanity, all the way; Twilight follows the brightest day, And every cat in the twilight’s gray, Every possible cat.

I like reading everybody's stories about this song. It's so nice to hear about how songs can make us think about the people we love. This song reminds me of this girl I like, right? I told her how I felt a few days before Christmas break. She is real pretty, and real sweet, with the most expressive eyes I've ever seen. Big brown ones, of course. This song makes me think about her a lot, man. We're friends now, which is cool, but I still like her. It's a conundrum for sure. But the hurt isn't that bad now, man. It's starting to fade. So, yeah, man.

Good thing you were open with her and good thing you could remain friends. It's not many who have the strength to do that and I just wanted to say that it's a rare thing for someone to be as mature about it as you are. You will find another pair of eyes to fall in love with.

My dad used to sing this to me when I was little. Now that I’m older it’s bittersweet to hear. He’s been gone almost 2 years. Never gets any easier.

It gets harder, that saying it gets easier over time is completely false. You just become more comfortable in the pain.

No doubt they're not his best vocals but awful? Not a shot. It's still played on radios for a reason, no one else could sing this song, if I want to get someone into van Morrison I show them this song first. @@curly_wyn

My brown eyed girl was my dog sophie. She lived to the age of 15, which was quite long for her breed. We had to put her down on april 1st of 2024. I remember my parents said before that this song reminded them of Sophie. Wherever she is now, I know she's happy. You were the greatest dog in the world sophie, my brown eyed girl.

Met my brown eyed girl in high school in 1970. It was love at first sight for me. We went our separate ways after graduation, but got together again in '93. Been together every day for the last 23 years. She loves me to sing this song to her.

my grandpa used to sing this to me along with my girl; he passed away in 2017 when I was a sophomore in high school. He was the only male figure in my life besides my older brothers. I was going through addiction when he died and didn't get to spend as much time with him as I should have. I was the classic stereotype of choosing getting high/drunk and hanging with "friends" over spending time with people I love the most. Being clean is so amazing and beautiful until you have to face those emotions that you put off because of drug use. I miss him every day and feel so much guilt, but the second I hear these two songs, all my worries and guilt disappear. It's as if he was there just reminding me that it's okay. Anyways I love reading the comments on this, it makes me happy.
