I’ve always had a healthy appreciation for The Band, but I wouldn’t say that they were one of my personal favorites. And yet, The Last Waltz has always had a special place in my heart. I found it hard to explain until fairly recently, when I came to realize that the concert itself took place on the night of my birth! As this version of The Band was leaving the world, I was entering… good for me, though the rest of the world might feel that they got the short end of that particular trade… oh well

I’ve heard the last waltz a few times, but until recently when I got the album I didn’t listen to it all that much. But after ten or more listens it’s van that stands out to my personal taste, and in that list of legends that’s really impressive. Made me think of van entirely differently. I’m not from that generation so I only knew him as the brown eyed girl singer. Now I see him and his whole genre of artist totally differently.

THIS is the classic performance of 'The Band's' "The Last Waltz" movie. Bethany, you could create an entire program analyzing the great vocals that took place through the course of that wonderful movie. This is classic Rock & Roll at it's best from some of the best performers of the era....all backed by "The Band".

I've seen Van Morrison live 5 times in Concert. Most recently in September 2023. The man can still bring it at 78. He never does a song the same way twice. He's a deep down soul man

I lived on the San Francisco peninsula from 1967-77 and this was the last concert I saw at Winterland. They opened the doors at 5:00 pm and it ended well after 2:00 am. I had seen the Band years earlier, and Van Morrison several times, but this show which also featured Dylan, Clapton, Neil Young, Ron Wood, Ringo Starr and many other guest performers was epic.

My favourite from the movie is the Band performing with the Staples. It's well worth a deep dive as the members of The Band trade verses with one of the great gospel / soul groups. So much to explore in the vocal styles.

Van is my favorite musician of all time, his music has literally kept me alive. His attack is unbelievable. But most of all, when he sings, you can almost see his soul. He is REAL. Van changes his enunciation a lot. Sometimes he sings as though it was speaking in tongues and not actual words. I think the fact that people who don't speak English love his vocals is testament to that. He has an unusual way of making a sort of sound sometimes at the end of words; a sort of tapering of noise unique to Van. Listen to the Lion is an unbelievable vocal performance and I'm assuming you know all about it. You are fantastic too by the way. 🤩 Thanks for this video, it was great.

I have always heard Van as a singing jazz horn player( repeated phrasing, time delaying, rythmic, volumn changes, scatting in almost every song, smoothness, growling and more). For invention within a song, hear " Listen To The Lion". With close to 50 albums, youwill understand his artistic dedication.

Always loved the performances in "The Last Waltz". This is a perfect example of when an artist completely destroys their studio recording via their live performance. I can't even listen to the studio version anymore. Great review and thank you for taking the time to examining this song.

I have to say, I'm a Van Morrison tribute artist, huge fan. your analysis passion is spot on. You are one of the few people I've ever seen that really knows what's going on inside both the song and the artist in his delivery. Van stole the show in this film and your deep dive can help others find the explanation why. Ultimately all that technical freedom is helping him be an extraordinary communicator. Thank you very much and I think I shall be a fan of yours now too. Bravo❤

"Brown Eyed Girl," "Why Must I Always Explain?", "Wavelength," "Tupelo Honey," "Listen to The Lion," "Someone Like You," "Days Like This," and "In The Garden",'Moondance', are all Van Morrison songs that are outstanding. You really can't make a list of songs that can explain his talent. He's a musical genius, singer, and poet. His music has been described as attaining a spiritual feeling beyond or above the range of typical experiences. A transcendence feeling of experiencing the music through his lyrics and voice. Other songs like Jackie Wilson Said (I'm In Heaven When You Smile), Full Force Gale, Domino, Cypress Avenue, Queen Of The Slipstream, and Dweller On The Threshold are good examples. It's a deep rabbit hole to go down - but, believe me, it's well worth it.

One of my favorites of his "songs" is "Coney Island". He doesn't sing, he just describes a day trip around Ireland. Just like I've done many times. Not to be too sappy, but it sings to my Celtic soul. The craic is definitely good when I hear it.

I struggle to choose between this live version, and the one with the Caledonia Soul Orchestra from the magnificent It's Too Late To Stop Now live LP. The Band here are great, of course, but he had the CSO as tight as tight can be. With you talking about repetition, I'd be interested to hear what you make of Madame George: the whole, gorgeous "loves to glove to love" section, and the ethereal outro.

I saw Van Morrison in 1971 at The Lions Share, a small club in San Anselmo, in Marin County, north of San Francisco. He played many shows in the Bay Area around that time, and he always had excellent musicians in his band. What made this show so great was that we got to see him and his band up close. It was a great time to live in the Bay Area, when San Francisco was a Rock and Roll Mecca.

I just saw the 45th anniversary release of this iconic concert film last night at the theatre. In a film full of stellar performances Van stole the show. You can see how utterly amused Robbie Robertson is while playing lead guitar here when Van goes into the stage kicks. The other two iconic performances here are for my money The Staples doing The Weight along with The Band. You get Mavis Staples pure power and Pops Staples silky smooth nuanced delivery along with Rick Danko's blue eyed soul on his solo. Then there is Joni Mitchell doing background vocals behind a screen on Neil Young's classic Helpless, adding texture to a clsssic song while Neil is clearly high as a kite. Lol
