We are Vendula and Marcel and have converted our mobile home, part time over the last 5 months. We quit our jobs, sold all out possessions that wouldn't fit in the van and took off on our 6 month road trip around the beautiful New Zealand trying to live off what we could source form the sea.
We designed the van around our hobbies and interests. Traveling around a country rich in seafood, and our passion for fishing and ocean sports, shaped a lot of how the van was designed. Our design accommodates a double fishing kayak, 5 fishing rods, 2 surfboards, spearfishing and diving gear and A LOT of fishing tackle.

Hey brother, I just bought my van today!! It's actually a Nissan Caravan but very similar body style to yours. Honestly, your build inspired me to finally commit 🤙 I'm very excited to see what you do on your next build. I'm diving deep in the planning phase right now and it's so overwhelming lol I am definitely going to follow most of your design. Like having to the fan and solar on one side! This leaves me room for surfboards on the other side. I'm going to reverse the fan/solar placement to have the fan over the bed and solar in the front. Question: How much battery capacity should I consider in order to power a max air fan during hot nights, a few led puck lights, and also a small 12v fridge all day so my food wont spoil? I'm starting to learn AGM is the way to go? If you have ANY suggestions, please throw them my way. Thanks in advance 😀
@SALTYVANVENTURES
@SALTYVANVENTURES 4 жыл бұрын
@@mlmora09 Yes I know the Nissan Caravans well. A friend who we travelled around for 2 months had one. They are nearly the same size in and out. We found the the fan over the kitchen worked best to exhaust fumes from cooking. If we wanted the fan on while we slept (which we very rarely did as NZ didn't get that hot) the best method was to crack the side windows next to your head to draw the fresh air though the windows and out the vent. This way it works both ways, just my 2 cents. Regarding the power consumption there are quite a few factors that play when calculating this. From what I can see online the max air fans have variable speeds 1-10. Let's say midway speed 5 uses 0.6amp, if you sleep 8 hours it uses 0.6x8=4.8ah. Led lights don't use much at all. Maybe 5ah if you leave them on all day. The fridges though can range a lot, depending on how much you want to spend and the size of the fridge. Chest fridges generally use less power that conventional stand up fridges. A 40-60l fridge uses anywhere from 3-5amps and cycles on and off all day. If it cycles say 30% of the time in a day (meaning it only actually runs 30%) @4amps it will need about 30ah (4x24x0.3=28.8) But this will go up and down depending on the outside temp, winter/summer, and how full the fridge is. So all up you now have 4.8+5+30 or around 40ah. Now that is considering they are the only things you want to power. What about inverters for laptops or usb for phones? If that is all though, as you should only discharge a deep cycle battery by 50% ( to keep the battery healthy) you would need a minimum battery size of 80ah. Bear in mind you want a safety factor so i would recommend 100-130ah battery to be safer and more comfortable, especially if you get a few days with little sunlight for the solar. And yes AGM batteries would be my choice as they are fully sealed and don't require any maintenance unlike some other batteries. Unless you want to fork out a lot of cash and go for the more efficient lithium batteries that are very light weight and can discharge to a lower percent. For the solar to match the battery I would go for 100-150ah. Hope that helps.

Hi, I personally like to use Polyester insulation. It doesn't have the highest thermal ratings but is is cheap, non irritant, doesn't absorb moisture and doesn't rot which are all important in determining insulation for vans. In my latest transit van build I am using a combination of rigid foil board and polyester insulation. Hope that helps!

My first car was a really old Toyota HiAce wich I fell totally in love with. Later I´ve had a more recent version but it broke down. I miss them sorely and am tempted to get another one when it gets time to get a van again. Your build is stunning but it wouldn´t work for us because we are 3 so I´d have to find a different way of arrangin the space.

Thank you! I was thinking how to arrange this setup for a 3 berth. It will depend on if the 3rd person is a child, adult or baby. If it were a small child or baby i would have lowered the cab roof and made a small infant bed above the cab.

Hey guys amazing built! Lot of good ideas! I’m sure I’ve seen pretty much the same van in Australia, probably a previous built from you! Would you tell me where did you find that wood that you’ve put on the roof/walls? It’s hard to find thin planks of wood to me! Cheers

Hey, i'm currently building my first van in Australia so might not have been me. There are some guys that have used my design template with the same van though so you might have seen them! You can buy the wooden cladding from Bunnings here and in NZ. Its typically 9mm and is called tongue and groove. It's much more expensive in NZ so I ended u sourcing it from a small family owned saw mill and got a great price for it. Hope that helps.

@@SALTYVANVENTURES Yeah that's what I used too here from bunnings but couldnt found less than 12mm and it was a bit expensive too... here is the result if you wanna check out : kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y7x-haxkr9_Vc6c.html Next Time I might look better for basic slat of wood to sand down and varnish but still hard to find thin slats of wood Cheers mate

Hey Marcell, When storing your gas, did you just have a LPG bottle in the cupboard under the stove top? Did you vent it to outside? If not, how was it safety-wise? I have the same set up as you but have no idea where to store the gas canister.
@SALTYVANVENTURES
@SALTYVANVENTURES 3 жыл бұрын
Yes it was just in the cupboard with a hole drilled though the floor to vent if it did ever leak. That is legal in NZ but not in Australia where the gas bottles needs to be stored in a sealed box and vented outside. In my latest build I am installing a fibreglass gas box on the side to store the gas bottle.

Great build guys. We are currently doing our own commuter and what has had us scratching our head is maintenance access to the transmission inspection plate behind the drivers cabin. You've built it in. How have you designed this to still allow access to the transmission inspection plate? Cheers from Brisbane.

Nice video and van set up. :) Would you recommend a van with windows or without having spent time on the road? I was thinking no windows would block out a lot of light and create privacy. Windows would allow air flow and looking out at the view.. What would you thoughts be?
@SALTYVANVENTURES
@SALTYVANVENTURES 3 жыл бұрын
We personally prefer lots of windows in our vans. It lets in a lot more natural light and also fresh air. But it may also depend if you want to stealth camp and try blend in as a normal panel van. This would be the only reason in my opinion not to install windows in your van. Privacy can be managed with blackout curtains of blinds.

the bulk head lines up flush with the little step behind the seats with the gearbox covers is. This allows sufficient room to lift the passenger seat up fully to access the engine. I glued pieces of wood to the walls and floor then screwed the bulkhead into them

when the van runs out of miles is there a way to save the back part? how does that all work once the van reaches its limit?

@SALTYVANVENTURES 8 ай бұрын
You could probably take the most expensive things out like the electrical system and fridge but I suppose the main point would be if your going to invest in a conversion, do so in a van with low km or a know reliable vehicle that will go the distance. That way, depending on how often you use it, it can last decades. Nothing last forever though but having said that there are camper vans from the 70s and 80s still in circulation today.
